At MY WITS END with Win7.....
Whomever knowledgeable,
I've been following all the advice given by Shrapnel Forums but NOW having THE FOLLOWING ISSUE: I had a pbem running then ended it using alt-ctrl-del. Now when I tried to restart the game it shows the start screen BUT will not run. I run the game in windowed mode. I checked my video card driver for an update at the manufacture's website and it's supposedly up to date. Prior to the problem I did the following: 1)Manually uninstalled the game 2)defragged my hard drive 3)Installed the game on the drive(away from program files the default) to a folder I created. What more can I do to get this game to work hassle free? Could my Avast antivirus be affecting the game? Is it possible I may have a bad copy of Win7 installed on my Toshiba laptop?---:mad: |
Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
Not a bad copy just a bad operating system hence Vistas shelf life, Win7 is just Vista V1.001 by the looks of it & fixed Jack so 2 choices.
go through the posts the for Win7 & Vista its the same animal or replace your operating system, I got it working fine before getting fed up of fighting it hijacking stuff so upgraded back to XP:) Try turning Avast off before running but doubt its doing anything to effect, I would turn off all background tasks to isolate the problem & free memory but would not think thats a problem on a new machine. Why did you shut down using task manager had the program frozen? Never heard of anything but graphics & sound probs. |

(You reinstalled the game to a new folder - if your PBEM was a secure mode one, that trashed your PBEM, of course. The path to the game is now different. If it was a secure mode PBEM, you will need to start over again. Ignore this if it was basic mode security) - Have you switched off the game splash screen in the game options launcher? (I presume this programme is what you mean by the "start screen"). Show Introduction = No. - Can you start the game itself by double clicking on its winSPMT.EXE, and so bypassing the launcher? - Has your anti-virus software done something because of your ctrl-alt-del of the running programme, eg put it into a "virus vault". See your AV programme's help for that. As to any knowledge of Windows 7/Vista, then you will have to read the threads here from folk who do have these operating systems. Vista and Windows 7 are unsupported operating systems, since neither of us has downgraded to them from XP yet. However since plenty of end users do use them without any difficulty, then perhaps your install of this O/S is dodgy in some way, as you suspect (or you have other hardware problems like say bad disk sectors, or faulty memory modules perhaps?). Cheers Andy |

Did you read this one ?? |
Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
Thanks everyone,
I solved the problem by restoring to an earlier time before my issue. Needless to say I won't be ctrl-alt-del out of the game ANYMORE. Luckily the game was basic mode security. Lesson learned.....:doh: |
Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
just thinking, wasn't ctrl-alt-del a way to exploit secure PBEM?
|
Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
@iCaMpWiThAWP,
What do you mean exploit secure pbem? |

Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
@iCaMpWiThAWP,
I know nothing of this. Even if I knew how to do it I would not use it. Victory achieved this way would be VERY shallow and cowardly to say the least. Have you done this exploit OR had it done against you? Can this actually be done with the latest 4.5 patch? Do Andy or Don KNOW about this potential exploit???:shock: |
Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
I never utilize a operationg system that is less than an year old because all the bugs have not been worked out.

This is a lot of un-necessary "excitement" over an off hand comment about something someone only "thought" could happen. There is no "potential exploit" of PBEM security using ctrl-alt-del and you of all people whould know the problems that can happen when you ctrl-alt-del Don |
Well, i had this issue once, game locked up because saving the game was considered a hacking atempt by my antivirus, i tried to ctrl-alt-del out and my opponent troops placement blinked on my minimap, while my own troops positions disappeared.

Re: At MY WITS END with Win7.....
"i had this issue once"
AND "i tried to ctrl-alt-del out and my opponent troops placement blinked on my minimap" is somewhat more informative and a LONG way from ... "you could "enter" the oponent's turn, see his forces, not sure if could move or shoot" isn't it ? None of that is possible on my machine. There were "flashing" issues like that in the past under certain condtions , none of which were related to ctrl-alt-del to my knowledge, that were dealt with in the past. Don |
