EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [GOOD AGAIN!]

--OK WE ARE STARTING, SEE VANILLA NEWBIE DELIGHT AT LLAMASERVER--

Giving this whole dominions 3 thing a shot. Don't have a ton of single-player experience, but figure since multiplayer is what the game is all about to just go ahead and have a crack at it. The map we will be playing is cradle of dominions (8-10 players). This game is for newbs only, please. If you've got a handful of games under your belt, that's fine too.

No mods, bog standard selections for everything, graphs off. Diplo non-binding

Early Age.

Any questions?

You are in my friend. Good to see we're filling up pretty quickly. Going to wait for 2-3 more and then I'll head on over to the llamaserver.

Any questions thus far?

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

I'm afraid I have to say its not quite possible to play marignon in a EA game.

Hello,

I would like to play (as my second multiplayer game, the first one, Rattlehead, began last week), as Ermor if possible.

Thanks.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

I would like to join as T'ien Ch'i. My first newbie game is ending badly (for my lizards, not me - I had fun :)).

A quick word about noobs and this forum. I got the game and joined the forum in the same week, so I've been around 3 months or so and am definitely still a newb. Things change, and these games take time. If you have time, look for a game that needs a sub (temporary or permanent). It can be great fun and lots of experience. It will also give you a pool of contacts for the inevitable sub hunt in this game. :re:

I am currently subbing in Mists of Time (great fun - late game mayhem), and NoobsandVets (confusing team setup - but interesting).

Oh and Humakty is right there's no Marignon in EA. ;)

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Another note for noobs. Team games don't have to be confusing :). Stagger lee just had the bad luck to come in playing for the least organized team in that game. Team games can be great fun, and if you communicate well with your team, you can help each other learn and develop new tactics.

Sorry if that sounded like a shot, I did say it was interesting. And I'm probably learning more in that game than I would in any other right now. Also, now if we ever need a sub here, we can count on you at least thinking about it, right? :angel

Astyreal February 2nd, 2010 07:40 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Hmm. Ok. Well the goal is definitely to make this newb friendly. Oh and did I mention that it's going to be accomodating to the working man as well? By that I mean 1 turn per day, and if you need 48/72 hrs that's quite alright. We can't all be students!

Oh and Krec please pick a diff nation.

1 or 2 more!

Krec February 2nd, 2010 08:28 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Hinnom

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

nice, so we've almost covered all the power house nations in EA, Niefelheim, Helheim, Lanka and Hinnom ;)
good thing we also got some regular nations too, and my rather underpowered but lovely lizardy C'tis :P

Nah, I just didn't want anyone walking away from your post thinking that team games were too much of a bother :). I'll consider subbing if you guys need it, but only as a last resort and not for more than 10 turns probably. I need to get out of games, not get back into more. Otherwise sure, I'd have no problem with it. I'm not really a noob though :P

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

We have 8, maybe give it a day or so longer to fill to 10?

John_Madlock February 3rd, 2010 12:50 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Are you began the game already? If not, and if it is still free space, I would like to join. I played MP once (50 turns) and SP a few times.
Maybe I would take Vanheim.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Hi there, I know this is a newbie game...I'd like in! Although I have playing xp, I haven't played the game at all in 2 - 3 years and would love this as a chance to ease back into it.

If your happy to accept me i'd like Ulm.

Cheers

Astyreal February 3rd, 2010 09:10 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Vanheim it is. Alrighty, 9 is enough, time for the moment of truth. I'm heading over to the llamaserver presently!

Astyreal February 3rd, 2010 09:11 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

GameExtremist seems we were posting at the same moment. Is ulm one of the weaker nations? Happy to let you join up, but it makes sense that you would pick one of the weaker sides. Not playing with any balancing mods or anything like that.

GameExtremist February 3rd, 2010 09:22 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [OPEN]

Hmm not sure ... I think Ulm is an average nation....honestly its been that long that its like relearning the game again : )

rdonj February 3rd, 2010 10:36 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Most of the IRC people tend to agree that ulm sucks, and is one of the worst ea nations. They definitely are not one of the stronger nations in the era, and it would be hard to find a less powerful nation to play instead.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

sorry for the newbish question(but well, this is a newbie game...) but how do I send in the pretender design? I created a pretender with a password in game but I don't know where on my computer it saves the pretender designs(looked around in my dominion3 folder and didn't find it), as I assume I need to send in some file(no idea which file type too) to Llama server...

GameExtremist February 4th, 2010 07:19 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Don't worry I had took it up too!

Quote:

Firstly, you should only join a game if you've found there's a thread for it on this board, you've read it, and they're still looking for players. Then you should post on the thread saying what nation you'll be. To actually join the game:

- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name in the subject line of your e-mail

A few minutes later you should get a confirmation e-mail, and if you check the website you should find your nation added to the list of nations which have joined the game.

If later you think of an improvement to your pretender, you can send it in again. Provided the game hasn't actually started the server will accept your revised pretender, and send you an e-mail to say so.

If you can recreate without the password, it would be better. If not PM the game admin with the password, in case he ever needs it. Hopefully it never becomes an issue, but the password is not necessary.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

You should read the llamaserver.net faq which explains everything you're asking about.

Patolixo February 4th, 2010 07:06 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

hmmm, weird. Llamaserver says that a pretender for Helheim has been submitted, but I am starting the pretender creation now. The game name is VanillaNewbieDelight, right?

Patolixo February 4th, 2010 10:28 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Seems the game has started without me. Who is playing Helheim then?

If thats the case and somebody has 'jumped' into your game slot without permission, then admin should allow you to resubmit your pretender.

Astyreal February 4th, 2010 11:04 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Seems like we may have a game sniper. Should we continue on, or should I roll back the game? I'd like to get patolixo in, how can i do this most efficiently?

GameExtremist February 4th, 2010 11:11 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Maybe use the "Un-start game (go back to "Waiting for pretenders")" option?

It'd be a bit of a pain if we all had to resubmit pretenders though. Maybe someone on the forums with more llamaserver xp can add some input?

Stagger Lee February 4th, 2010 11:19 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

If we un-start, can you keep an eye out for the email address Helheim is currently using and kick it if it shows up again?

Krec February 5th, 2010 12:19 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

dude, you started the game before we could load pretenders. start again and wait until we all have pretenders loaded.

Krec, you're Hinnom. Somebody uploaded a pretender for Hinnom. I have not encountered this before, at least 2 spots were jumped.

Krec February 5th, 2010 01:43 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

dude, i tried to upload but said no game was found, i would suggest starting again.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

I didn't do anything, it had already started when i checked the site this evening. I will restart.

Astyreal February 5th, 2010 07:16 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

OK. I restarted. Lets hope that no one jumps a place again. Is there anyway to pw protect a game?

Astyreal February 5th, 2010 07:25 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Also I changed the game name to Lets_Try_Again to be a bit more covert, and b/c I was having problems fixing the old game.

Patolixo February 5th, 2010 08:23 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Pretender submitted successfully! Thanks people, and sorry for the inconvenience! Let's get this party started soon!

John_Madlock February 5th, 2010 09:17 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

So VanillaNewbieDelight is dead, and we play in Lets_Try_Again now, right?

Stagger Lee February 5th, 2010 10:32 AM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Right. I'll send my pretender after work. Maybe we should look at llamaserver before uploading to make sure nobody has jumped into our spots?

Me sad goblin, had nice startpos, next one will be all screwie sure thing.

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Just waiting for the last one. Should I set the game to auto start, or how should I do it?

Stagger Lee February 5th, 2010 06:52 PM

Re: EA: Vanilla, Newbie game [RUNNING -- CHECK LLAMASERVER!]

Can you look at the email addresses that didn't belong in the first one? I think Helheim and Hinnom. If so, look for them in the new one, and hope they are not there. Otherwise all email addresses should be as they were. I wouldn't auto-start. Start when you are happy with what you see.
