Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

The new patch was released today :)
Here's what it brings (taken from the official announcement):
# Eliminated nations are now also shown in the graphs.
# Spell AI improved regarding when to cast Arrow Fend, Gift of Flight and Legions of Steel.
# Could get some kind of mine even though all site slots were full--fixed.
# New monster modding commands: #inquisitor, #shatteredsoul, #banefireshield, #uwdamage, #popkill.
# Some units like the vampire now actually takes damage from being underwater, just like they were supposed to.
# Description changed for Maggots to better correspond with its true effect.
# Djinn is now a unique monster.
# Increased maximum number of messages a player can send on a given turn.
# Fixed crash during turn generation.
# Support for PulseAudio on Linux.
# New resolutions! 1024*600 and 1024*576 (for netbooks).
# Dominions could crash when changing video preferences--fixed.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

And also the announcement that Dom3 is now a downloadable purchase.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

After all those "I want to download Dominions" flamewars? Wow.

I will love it if the AI fix actually makes Legions of Steel usable.

but the manual! it will spread like wildfire! it will be so easy to find even a caveman could do it!

oh wait...

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

It was already out there so I dont think this will affect it much. For many reasons, this is a good time for Dom3 to go digital where it wasnt a good idea before.

Having it be downloadable will be a lot easier to convince my friends to actually buy the thing.

Definitely. Though the $60 will be a difficult hurdle too. However, grats to shrapnel for making it to the 21st century

Edit: Oh, and lol for any poor saps who ordered it a day or two ago :p

Well, the physical manual is always better. And Shrapnel could graciously allow to all the registered owners access to the digital version too - the way other companies already do.

Zeldor March 8th, 2010 04:22 PM

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Huh, downloadable version, without any discount, without manual shipped and you can only pick one OS?

DonCorazon March 8th, 2010 04:31 PM

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Thanks for the patch Ilwinter!

PS I really love meaty, physical manuals. If I had the time, I'd volunteer to do some art for a revised manual. Would love to see some old school drawings illustrating the races and spells, like the old D&D player's manual. Even the old manuals from D1 iirc you can download on IW's website that list out all the spells and just have simple icon's are pretty cool.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

I know this has been discussed to death but I can't help but wonder whether we'd ever see a dom-IV.

Hey, I now know for example that I'd never see a MoM 2. So was just wondering whether dominions series has come to a similar grinding halt with the latest installation.

Gandalf Parker March 8th, 2010 05:02 PM

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

I see MoM2 projects popping up all the time. So far, none have completed but some have done some amazing work on it.

As for the price of Dom3 there is a price break for full time college students or american military.

What, why didn't I know about these price breaks? FFS!

if a person is both a full time college student and american military do they get a double price break?

do DoD employees operating in a civilian capacity (such as USACE) qualify as 'american military'?

Thanks for the patch. Can someone with Linux verify that this addresses the PulseAudio problem? Dom 3 still takes over all sound when it's run after the 3.24 patch for me (Ubuntu 9.10).

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Sorry I only run it in server text mode.
But its developed on Ubuntu so it should work.

There are some new switches though involving sound. Do a dom3 -h and see all the switches

Unless of course you want them to do it again.

Sometimes you have to look at your actions based on what result it is you are trying to achieve. Something I see sadly lacking in dealing with the devs and staff in this forum. Some even seem totally opposite almost to the point of considering it a conspiracy from competitors. :)

Yep, and I'm one of them. So where is my sexy pics of Dom3 hunks? How the hell do they expect me to recruit my fellow ladies to the community without appropriate eyecandy? Well, I guess I can start with the lesbians...

Strange. Could you start dom3 with "-dd" for debug and post a piece of the log where it says -- sound init --

With --pulseaudio -dd I get:
Code:

-- sound_init --
Init sound
-- general_init --
-- start --

... but no sound. Ubuntu 9.10 (Intel 82801G ICH7 Family snd_hda_intel)

Do you have libpulse-simple.so installed? It should be in /usr/lib/

edit:
The problem is probably that I used libpulse-simple.so instead of libpulse-simple.so.0
As a workaround you could "sudo apt-get install libpulse-dev" to get the missing file.

On the one hand: Thanks for the patch. Awesome that you still support dom3 this far on.

On the other: Least interesting patch so far? I can't see a single thing in there that will make any difference to me. Hmm, maybe the spell AI.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Least interesting? Yeah I guess they could have waited until it had more features.
Quote:

* Units with the uwdamage attribute now actually takes damage from being under water.
* Spell AI improved regarding when to cast Arrow Fend, Gift of Flight, Legions of Steel.
* Djinn is now a unique monster.
Useful. Even if the Djinn thing is more of a "ahh rats, they fixed it"

Quote:

* increased maximum number of messages a player can send on a given turn.
* Fixed crash during turn generation.
* Eliminated nations are now also shown in the graphs.
Big happiness on each of those.

Quote:

* Support for PulseAudio on linux.
* New resolution 1024*576 (for netbooks).
* New resolution 1024*600 (for netbooks).
* Dominions could crash when changing video preferences, fixed
more like overlap with the new project but it will please some people. Nice of him to think of us and come back to include it.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Way cool!
Interesting note on:
* Eliminated nations are now also shown in the graphs.

Even in games you are already playing, the first host you do with the new patch in place will put eliminated nations back into the score charts. It fills in all their past data so apparently it did remember it all along, just wasnt showing it till now.

At least it did for me. Solo game that started with 92 nations. Makes the score graphs much more interesting.

I have no reason to think it would be different for MP and/or Server games.

Krec March 10th, 2010 12:27 AM

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

92 nations wow!! now thats a game. i would like to see that graph.

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

Since the game is now available in DD form, I'm assuming those who purchase the DD version will not be required to have the CD in the drive to launch the game. If this is true, will those who own the CD version be receiving a patch that removes the CD check?

That's weird. I remember having to take my CD with me on the road 6-9 months ago with my laptop in order to launch the game on it, but I can now launch the game without the CD on my desktop. Has this game never used a CD check? If so, I may be losing my mind.

WraithLord March 10th, 2010 08:45 AM

Re: Patch 3.24 - Thank you IW!

never AFAIK and good thing that it doesn't - that check is so annoying.
