Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
This will be my first foray into running a game. I welcome constructive criticism of these game parameters.
Host: Llamaserver. game name is SSStreamlands Era: Early Players: 6. Parents of small children especially welcome. (see below) Level: non-vets, as self-defined Turn frequency: 1 week, quickhost. (see below) Nations: Land nations only. Hinnom is banned. Niefel is banned (see post #12). Mods: CBM 1.6 Map: Streamlands 2 Diplomacy: encouraged. non-binding. Player communication: by email (see below) Victory: by concession Other settings: default If you are shocked & dismayed by the one week turn, let me explain. The intent is that in practice, players will generally get their turns done in a day or two. I claim this is in fact similar to "48 hours, extensions will be freely given", but minus the hassle of having to deal with extension requests and so forth. Since there are only 6 players, the likelihood that any one has a tough week and takes a while should be reduced. Still, please understand that this is a game for busy people, who may need to take a week sometimes, when their 2 year old has to go to the hospital or whatever. I could be wrong - a critical mass of players may always wait till the last minute to do their turn, in which case this will have been a noble failed experiment. A corrolary to this is I will try to enforce one stale & you are out. If a nation stales, we then have 1 week to find a sub, if we don't find a sub I will set the nation to AI. This does not apply if the stale is for technical or other legitimate reasons rather than lameness. Any non-veteran player is welcome to join (as self-defined), but I'd like to try to give parents of small children priority. Once all the slots are filled I'll wait another day or so to see if any parents want in, in which case they would bump out the last non-parent signing up. I hope that is clear. Communication by email: Once we have our roster of players, email or PM me with your email address. I will set up an email list for the game and send out everyones' email addresses to everyone else. This too is in service of "for busy people" - I check my email all the time, but having to go to the shrapnel games forum and check for PMs may not happen all the time. NOTE: To express your interest in playing, post here like usual. PMing me your email address happens after we have the player roster set. Also in service of "for busy people", is using CBM 1.6 which makes gem generators unique, and the fact that it is a smallish game on a smallish map. Hopefully a conclusion can be reached before we get too far into the massive micromanagement phase. So, if this gets off the ground I would take Arco 1. aaminoff - Arco (parent) 2. Gregstrom - Yomi (parent) 3. Stagger Lee - Ctis (parent) 4. pyg - Pangaea (parent) 5. Jorus - Caelum 6. Curious Yellow - Ulm (alternates in case the 6 listed choose not to play for whatever reason) 7. NooBliss - Marverni 8. legolasjrt - Pangaea |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Not a parent, but at times quite busy, and would welcome such a relaxed hosting schedule.
I'd like to try Ulm. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Greetings.
No children, but all for a relaxed schedule. Marverni please! |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
I am a parent of a 2 1/2 year old, but If I haven't already played 10 MP games then I'm pretty close. I'd be quite happy to take one of the weaker races by way of compensation.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Gregstrom may not be a "shark" - I suspect he might be further up the food chain ;)
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
I'm a long way from being a vet, as Baalz has been proving all too frequently.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Interested
#games - 9 Age of daughter - 3 1/2 Age of son - 2 C'tis please (pease also give me a chance to reconsider nation if Niefelheim is in the game - too close to a reenactment of my first MP experience :hurt:) |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Well I've been in more than 10 MP games but less than 15 so maybe I don't qualify. I do have a 2.5y little girl and like the slow pace concept for my busy summer. I'd be interested in playing Argatha if allowed.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
1 Play me first mp game.. please pangea for me
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
A small bit of confusion - the part about PMing me with your email address is not how you indicate interest in playing, but rather once we have the list of players set. Forum handle Jorus PMd me asking to play Agartha at 12:33am. Since it was a little unclear in the initial post I feel like it would be fair to allow Jorus's request in the queue at that point.
I will edit the top post to make that clearer. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
We now have not one but two parents who may be pushing the experience limit. I would like to make this a parent-friendly game, so I will go ahead and change the player experience requirement to non-vets, as self-defined. If any of the folks who already signed up don't want to be in the pool with non-vets, they can withdraw their signup with no hard feelings.
I'll make that edit. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
For the sake of simplicity lets just say Niefel is banned. Not that I have anything against them, but it simplifies my life so that if someone chooses Niefel I don't have to get back to Stagger Lee and ask what nation they want etc.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Once Gregstrom and Jorus let me know if they are playing / what nations they want, how about if we give any more parents who are interested until midnight tonight forum time to sign up. It's been less than 24 hours and we are full already! With 4/6 parents even! I wonder if there oughtn't be more MP games posted. Perhaps I should create SSStreamlands2, another game with the same parameters, and see if that fills up as well.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Call me Yomi, then. I've never played them before, so it should be interesting.

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Sorry for any confusion, I am not a parent of small children but am a real noob with one demo MP game under my belt. If Agartha is a problem then how about Caelum? J
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
pyg and Jorus both said they don't mind letting the other have Agartha. I am confident that they can work it out.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
How about I switch to Pangaea?
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
How's this for a diplomatic solution - I'll take Caelum and pyg takes pangaea?
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
I created the game on Llamaserver, it is SSStreamlands. Assuming no parent wants in in the next hour, we have our player roster and can start sending in pretenders. Please remember to PM me with your email address.

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (recruiting)
Noob Question #1:
cbm 1.6 mod: I understand the mod and can download the file but do I need to create a different directory for this game, or what? I don't want my other games to be "contaminated" by this change in the rules. Appreciate any advice given.... J |

From the main menu you may use the preferences menu -> mods menu to enable or disable mods. When a mod is enabled, it will automatically be used for any newly started game or any pretender designing you do. (You'll want to enable it for pretender design, CBM changes costs for a lot of pretender options). A game remembers which mods are in effect for that game, and dom3 will automatically change the enabled mods to those of an existing game when you choose to continue playing that game. Note this persists after you stop playing that game, so if you want to create a new game or design pretenders after playing an existing game, make sure the enabled mods are the ones you want! (Short answer: it will not screw up your existing games.) |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (upload pretenders)
Stagger Lee asked if I was a parent. Yes, I am. I have two daughters, ages 3 and 6. If anyone happens to know any good schools in the Boston area, feel free to email or PM me, we are looking for a school that will be a good fit for our older daughter, who is very independent.

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (upload pretenders)
Pretender submitted!
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (upload pretenders)
Just to let you all know that there is no need to rush, which isn't in the spirit of the game anyhow. Unfortunately I will not be at my home computer until Saturday and I won't have time to set up my pretender and stuff until then. I would also like to do this on my home machine anyhow (I manage to lose things when "synchronizing")
Regards - J |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (upload pretenders)
No problem Jorus. I believe I have emails from everyone except Gregstom. Like the tortoise, we will get there too.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (upload pretenders)
I created an email list for the game and sent out a message to it. If you did NOT receive that email, please PM me.

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
OK, first turns are out, we addressed the email problem, from now on I will not be checking this thread, please email me.
Good luck everyone. - Alex |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
I know requests of this nature should be done by email, but that is not possible right now. Sorry, but can we get 12h added to this turn. I couldn't do my turn last night (I have been away), and it looks like I'm not the only one outstanding at the moment. It would be greatly appreciated. :)

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Arco is willing to buy pearls and fire gems. we can trade other gem types or craft a variety of items, including most multi path items.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Welcome and thanks to the new Ulm player. :)
No problem with a rollback. Anybody who already looked at the turn and saved it should delete the contents of the game folder, and let a new .2h be built from scratch. Also, my vote would be for normal in-game communication in the thread. My communication skills are bad enough that I would prefer to address my games when I'm thinking about them, and reserve email for RL, or urgent communications. If nobody answers me in the thread, I will stick to the original premise. ;) |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
what's going on with the game? there was a rollback, than a force host(or so it seems) and than a server hosting error. can't even find the game on Llamaserver now so I have no idea when the next turn is due, and heck, if the game is still up...
I'd appreciate we delay the game(if it's still running that is) until we figure everything out. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
It seemed like we were back in business but without the rollback. Then I looked a couple of days ago, Ulm player submitted a turn, and status page had no other players, just Ulm. The rest of us showed on the other pages. I wish I had checked staling data. My guess is we crashed again on hosting with only one player. Any word from llama?
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Llamaserver was playing up again in the week. I've contacted llamabeast about this, and hopefully things will be restored again. tbh, restarting the game from scratch might be simpler if rather less satisfying.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Apologies for the delays in sorting this out. I haven't been in much the last few nights. Won't be able to fix it tonight either as I'll be at my girlfriend's and I can't access the server from there. Will try to look into it tomorrow.
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
OK guys.
We had the rollback, but only Arco and I played last turn. What's up? |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
please don't initiate another rollback. I tried to warn you guys against the first time(when it was just for Ulm) and we had a rollback bug which almost killed the game entirely. I just think that all this idle time made people forget about this game, which I suspect is why they haven't submitted their turns.
perhaps you should send a llamaserver email to all the staling nations, inquiring why they staled and remind them that we're back in business, so they can resume submitting their turns. the only other thing you can do is keep an eye on llamaserver when it's near the hosting time. if too many people have yet to submit their turn than extend the hosting by 24 hours and check with said players what their problem is. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Hm, yes. I'm currently a bit burned out on Dom3 and my motivation is rather low, so sorry about the interruption to normal service.

Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
well, it seems like it's just you and me that actually contiue to play the game regularly. and to be honest, I haven't been investing as much time as I should have, this late in the game, yet nobody tried to make any move against me, mostly due to stales.
my position seems awfully dominant, and nobody seems to really try and challenge it. should we just end this game as it seems that the majority(3/5 players) completely lost interest already. |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
Unfortunately the last turn was on Thanksgiving, and I missed the reminder.
Since I am a very minor player and have had no response from the diplomatic enquiries I sent out to Arco and Ulm, it is evident that my future is bleak no matter what I do. Therefore, I am happy to call it quits with no winner (let's face it BG, you can't call this a win), or go AI. Thanks, J |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
If nobody tries to claim a win we can give this game a decent burial
|
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
not sure what "trying to claim" means but it seems like I'm the clear winner of this game... this turn everyone staled but me, even C'tis who kept on going until now. I already control the vast majority of the map and I'm slowly but surely eating through the rest of you, who just keep on staling. it's no fun, it's boring and there's absolutely no challenge fighting against staling opponents.
just some free information. I've got access to all research paths, even blood. in fact I've researched all the way to blood 8 and started summoning the Heliophagi, so soon I'll have all those nasty blood SCs to go hand in hand with all my mystics who will soon be done researching everything available for massive scale communions. also got conj 9 and on the process of getting some D7 mages for a massive Tartarian factory. as you guys know I've had the Gift of Health global up for quite some time, so my tarts will heal up and be good to go... also all of you have probably seen the pretender I inherited from the previous Arco player, a Virtue SC that I've equipped with massive MR, resistances to everything meaningful and still have enough protection and defense(especially with all the buffs he casts in battle) to hold his own against most things you guys throw at him. needless to say I have massive mind hunt ability, I'm Arco, duh... and basically everything else I'll ever want or need. gem income is also pretty crazy, a bit short on pearls but got a ton of other gems that I can alchemize if I so wish. if anyone else honestly thinks he can give me a run for my money in this game than please stop staling and lets see it. otherwise I don't see a point continuing when the rest of you seem to have given up on this game already... |
Re: Small slow streamlands for busy newb parents (running)
so, it seems that even Stagger Lee gave up on the game, so 4 of you are chain staling from now on. can the admin please step up and declare the game finished already? also tried contacting llamabeast via email and PM alike, to close the game, seeing that the admin is among the stalers but so far I have yet to see a reply, though llamabeast is quite busy so it's understandable.
