How is R'lyeh pronounced?

No.

its not meant to be pronounceable by humans

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

Its intentionally impossible to pronounce "properly". That said, Ruh-Leigh usually gets the point across, as would Ree-Leigh, or Rih-Leigh. I'm somewhere between the first 2 personally, but having no proper method and only an approximation is intentional.

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

personally I just pronounce it Rah-Lieh, not sure if it's the same as what you meant with Ruh-Leih or not. but yeah, I can't be certain if it's correct or not, nobody can. as squirrel said, it's not meant to be pronounced by us humans, but since we read it and we're curious we try, and we're probably wrong because we shouldn't be able to pronounce it properly in the first place...

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

Everyone I know pronounces it as Righ (same as High) and then Lee (same as Grant Lee). That's probably not accurate, but it's what we're using unless the developers provide an official response.

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

i generally hear Rx - lee-eh

Where
:x is a random vowel or semi-vowel sound
:lee-eh is dipthonged, not two separate syllables.

I tend to prefer the really short e sound that usually gets written as an upside-down e in pronunciation guides. I forget what its called.

One could of course assume the ' is a click as per Bushman languages, but that sounds kind of messy.

I always pronounced it as "Rill-ith", but that seems to be terribly wrong. Oh dear. :p

Well. You have to have a tentacle mouth to pronounce it correctly, so it's kind of a moot point.

I'm surprised people put a vowel in place of the '. I pronounce it "Rlee -yeah", or sometimes "R(stop)lee-yeah"

I don't believe you. Rl is not a pronounceable starting consonantal sound. You have to insert a vowel to say it. (There's a reason I prefer a schwa - yay, i remembered the name)

Yeah, The "'" is sound made by your tentacles. So it can be a bit hard to pronounce by humans. Having a non euclidean anatomy also helps.

Of course it is. R and L are both voiced consonents. Japanese doesn't distinguish them either. In French slang, "reluquer" can be pronounced rluquer for instance, and would be spelled r'luquer to show the schwa is not pronounced. Now my R is a French R, it's "harder" than the English version, so that may explain why I don't need a vowel and you do: The same letter doesn't mean the same sound.

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

I always said it "Rye Leth"
Rye like the bread
"Leth" rhymes with "Meth"

Then i saw that there actually wasn't a "T" and got sad, but I've grown so used to it, it's hard to kick.

Really? I could have sworn R'lyeh was pronounced "All your mind are belong to Cthulhu. You are on the way to lobotomization. There is no chance to escape, make your time."

But maybe that is just me.

I always pronounce it ER-LIE in my head.

Not unlike what you say when caught red-handed... "Errr... <lie>"

I think you would have to be insane to pronounce properly and to understand the awesomeness once you can. ;)

Well I will try to ask a Shoggoth friend of me for prounonciation....

...Well Shoggoths are maybe a bad idea as they are not that great in prounoucation, nor they are kind teachers (I think that eating bad prounoncing students is a bit harsh...)

Re: How is "R'lyeh" pronounced?

the "R" is pronounced as in "Grrrrr" with a "lee-yeh" for the ending part.

In addition, the "lee-yeh" part has a kind of "snap" to the ending "yeh" part which is pronounced much as an Aussie would say "Yeah" in normal speech.

So all in all, when spoken correctly, "R'lyeh" has much the same impact on the listener as when one speaks French correctly. You know when you've spoken it with the correct accent -- but you'll be damned if you say it with proper accent and inflexion in front of a Chick you're trying to impress. Unless of course she's French ;-)
