More lovecraft

Well, in case IW still occasionally stumble unto these forums I'd like to mention that one of the selling points of dominions to me was the nation of R'lyeh.
H.P. lovecraft's myths captivate the imagination and some of it's spirit is already beautifully incorporated into dom myth.

So, why not more of a good thing?- Some random ideas:

- A map of the dreamlands.
- Add monsters, some examples: Dhole, Dog Mountains, Ghasts, Magah & Shantak birds, Moonbeasts & Nightgaunts
- Make Cthulhu and other great old ones available, either as pretender or high end summons
- Add another lovecrafatian nation, either based on one of the rival cities to R'lyeh or the rivalry in the great old one's pantheon

I must agree with this, void gates lottery, insanity and other unusual elements are real selling points too!

Perhaps even a King in Yellow Pretender could work.

A non Euclidian map...

Re: More lovecraft

Hey, all the wraparound maps are donut worlds. Isn't that weird enough?

There have been some weirder ones.

And technically, geometry on the surface of a sphere (or even a squashed sphere like the Earth) is non-Euclidean.

I'd like to see more Mythos type stuff for Atlantis. Deep Ones are definitely Lovecraftian, but there isn't as much flavor there. They should also be the ones doing the hybridizing.

How about a Color Out of Space spell or event? Sets province death scale to 3, until discovered and killed?

National spell: Manifest Great old one

[battlefield version]
Chance to manifest a great old one, failure can result in various effect like calling multiple horrors, random horror marking/insanity...etc. If successful, a random great old one is manifested for the duration of the battle, they have various powers and may not always help you...
[Ritual version]
Same as above, can only be cast at capital, may cause events that kill off your population / insanity ...etc. Success in manifesting a great old one generates random effects associated with them (Not all are beneficial).

Example: Ithaqua when manifested in battle would grant cold immunity to your troops for the battle, he also joins the battle with a handful of Shantaks. The ritual versions gives you various random possibility such as: a handful of shantak, a wendigo or two, global +1 cold scale shift, cold event at your capital killing off some pop, the great old one may even join you temporarily (at great cost like eating your pop or making your people insane) ...etc

Yog-Sothoth manifested in battle might cast vortex of returning or cast twist fate on all your troops. In ritual if you manage to summon it might come with the astral pathway power (like gate-stone) and/or eyes of god effect, though causing disaster events , random dominion loses and insanity on your commanders globally until it leaves. Other ritual effect may get you an avatar hero (say 'Umr at-Tawil) who is much less powerful but permanent and without the downside, maybe a "boots of plane" power like the visitor.

That's a lot of graphics and content to create for 2 spells of course but practicality aside, I can dream about it!

A lot of this stuff we could do ourselves if we really wanted. Of course, there would need to be someone to do the graphics. :P

A non-euclidian map would not be that hard, though, actually. I present my case...

Pretty much just do a google search for "fractal" and you'll find a number of images that could make for interesting non-euclidian maps. It would then just be a matter of adding in the white dots, adding purposely strange province connections and voila, a non-euclidian map.

Re: More lovecraft

Finalgenesis, I really like your suggestions.
rdonj, I find the 2nd and 3rd maps images to be, well - amazing.

Perhaps a skilled modder can add more Cthulhu content as a mod.

Re: More lovecraft

The Mytheology mod has both a Cthulhu, and uber shoggothlike pretender.

The problem with more Lovecraft things is that it is hard to make a consistent theme, and not a rag tag collection of "that is also lovecraft" stuff.

Re: More lovecraft

WOW Rdonj.

All three are awesome.. The first map hurts my eyes.. how cthulu.. and makes me wonder what the hell is in the middle.

the third map looks really good for egg world. This was exactly what I was hoping someone would due - taking the bait - when I said non euclidean map.

Now if we could just get someone to write a program to randomly assign connections.....

Re: More lovecraft

Even more awesome if the .map connections could be randomized every turn.... and sent as part of the turn file.

Or.. you could have some.. fairly stable routes.. and then temporal instabilities that added routes for a duration.. that REALLY sounds like fun.

And I think it could work.

Other cool ideas.. map provinces that phase in or out.

OT: the world of lankhmar had a sinking land. That would periodically sink and rise.
It would be cool if it had a 3-5 turn periodicity where it alternatied being sea and not sea.
