Re: US Stryker Brigade
John,
Hope this helps. 1. First sets up the plan for the Stryker combat brigades dated from 1999. I think the tables at the bottom (Click on to enlarge.) will be most useful and it seems this is what was adopted based on the next two newer references. http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...igade-ibct.htm 2. Next is info on the 3rd SBCT "Arrowhead Brigade" (Formally the 3rd Brigade.), 2nd ID the first unit converted over by the USA. Unit make up is to the right hand margin click on them for further info. http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...y/2id-3bde.htm 3. 101 means just that from this dedicated STRYKER website. Go about half way down (Next line under Corps and ARMY definition.) for the 3-2 SBCT (As above.) and 1-25 SBCT brigade make up. Again seems to be in line with the above two refs. http://www.strykernews.com/archives/...igade_101.html Sorry no pics. Regards, Pat |
Re: US Stryker Brigade
Cheers for doing the legwork Pat had brain fade why didnt I look in globalsecurity?
Confirmed my suspiscion towed howitzers not Paladins |
Re: US Stryker Brigade
HIMARS is included in the mix too. They chose towed because of the ability to keep better pace with the Stryker vehicles. I do know they are feverishly working on adopting an 105mm to the vehicle chassis, which decreases range and lethality of the gun, but provides chassis commonality and similar levels of crew protection.

This is the current MTO&E for HBCT, IBCT, and SBCT.

Re: US Stryker Brigade
There's a 2009 version of FKSM 71-8 available through this yahoo group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ModernTO-Es/. It was created effectively as a subgroup of the following group, which I would recommend anyone interested in organization join: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/TOandEs/

Re: US Stryker Brigade
Does anyone know why the Stryker mobile gun platoon has 3 vehicles, rather than 4. Most American armored type platoons to my knowledge have been using 4 vehicle platoons since the introduction of the Abrams. Thanks

As there are 3 platoons per co so thats one for each. |
Re: US Stryker Brigade
The MGS is used in a CS role much like the M551 Sheridan was used in the 82nd Abn. The low recoil 105mm has suspect anti-armor defeating performance and the loadout is primarily HEAT or Canister.
The major problem with the platform is the inability to fire over the side of the vehicle. They have a tendency to rollover when you traverse past the first wheel and fire the main gun. oops. Interesting concept; poorly designed. |

Some problems still exist with the STRYKER MGS and though in the field as late as this past fall it still was under modifications to fix numerous issues to include firing stablization while on the move at the Aberdeen proving grounds in MD.
To the ammo issue I hope this will help; Note para 5: http://www.globalsecurity.org/milita...nd/iav-mgs.htm Some good general info; Note para 2: http://www.military-today.com/artillery/stryker_mgs.htm Due to the reliability issues a good article on them and the "argument" against the MGS based on existing platforms. There is enough other info out there but, I was somewhat surprised how willing we are to use such high tech ammo for the alternative (Yeah that's a tease.) given to the MGS. http://www.defenseindustrydaily.com/...e-Field-04731/ Since it's been awhile here's a pic: Attachment 10466 Regards, Pat |
Re: US Stryker Brigade
To my knowledge they can fire Sabot, but the major HEAT loadout would most likely apply to their current deployment - few targets for APFSDSDU out there in the mudhuttistan.

Re: US Stryker Brigade
In my opinion, by only having three vehicles in the platoon, you just have the platoon and you can't split into two sections. Maybe since its only for CS they don't want to thin it out by having sections of two, as you would with an MBT. Just a thought.

Re: US Stryker Brigade
The original platoon structure for the MGS was 4 vehicles. A chart showing this is in post #2 of this thread. Why they went with a 3 vehicle platoon is beyond my comprehention. It may be because of the many short commings of the system. IMHO if these issues can be resolved and as the vehicles become more available they may go back to the 4 vehicle platoon.
