campaign: auto-buy
just a small proposal: add the possibility to auto-purchase units in a generated campaign - similar to the option, which is available during generating of battles.
So the player has to cope with the force he gets. |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
While I could see limited use for this me gut tells me in 99.5 % of the cases people would rather pick their own forces when playing campaigns . Single battles are fine for that kind of experiment but 10 battles in a row is a bit much when you are handed units you may not want or need or care to use

Re: campaign: auto-buy
ok, then my wish is postponed until you guys develop a complete new version of that great game ;).

Re: campaign: auto-buy
Another way for those wanting a randomly generated force would be to first start a battle with randomly generated forces, write down what you got, exit the battle, start the campaign and use the list from that battle to make your purchases.
That said, I am not all that fond of random force generation - if I want to go for realism, I prefer to start with an actual historical battalion TOE and then make some additions to it. For example currently I am doing a 1946 "Red Storm" (US vs USSR) with my core force being an armoured infantry battalion (3 regular companies and 1 support company) with some extras to go with the theme (2 SPAA sections, 1 armoured engineer platoon and 1 armoured cavalry platoon). |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
I think a much easier solution will be if someone just posted his typical, balanced force list. Maybe it was discussed before what should be chosen in '50s '60s '70s and so on for major countries.

Re: campaign: auto-buy
Have to say I was thinking of doing this... Found resorces on the SOTCW website, trying to process them via the Mind Map generator, the same for FM-100-60-3 or how is it called dealing with the Red Army... If I ever get to creating my website, will try to have one such section ;)
In the meantime, here is for example the organisation of a Soviet Motor Rifle Bn (BTR) from 1980s, as per the US Field Manual: http://tuccy.sweb.cz/MR%20Bn%20BTR.jpeg |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
That's exactly what I was thinking about.
I have mainly played during WWII period, so for me it is also interesting when AT guns has been replaced with ATGM and other radical changes. This map should be of greater help to the topic's author than any cripple AI buy assistance. |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
Hawk,
I am one of those strange people who would appreciate such an option. In war, you have to fight with what you have - not an ideal battlegroup. Finding PBEM opponents brave enough to try auto-pick is not easy... |

How about India / Pakistan 1975 ? Take whatever side you wish. I'm running the latest widescreen version here. |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
Skirmisher,
You were brave enough to play like this with me in the past - I salute your courage. Everyone else is a chicken! Can't take you on at the moment, I'm afraid - RL kicked me hard last month, and I can't play as many games as I could in the past. But if you sign up at the World at war site (just click on my banner sig) I'm sure you'll find someone able to play. |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
I've played a couple AI-buy force battles and find them more interesting and challenging than the comman P1 and P2 Human-buy.
Each time however *I* set-up according to the AI-buy rule and had a very exciting but different and wonderful difficult game. IIRC the map is random also. My question is: Can P1 use human-buy (as a cheat) and set P2 to AI-buy while P2 is not aware? Or is it a honor thing? |

but I would play a few people that I had enjoyable games with in the past. You would certainly be on that list. When things turn around for you send me a PM and we'll get a computer buy game going. |

OH,,,,I had said "according AI Buy rules" which should mean CU buy for both sides,I should have said ONLY instead of "according" to be very clear. HU deploy for both sides,,,,are you up to one? Honorable players only, should play this way,see i just answered my own query:) |

It is extremely well laid out for my purposes and I like it (much better visual representation than most of the organisation of the unit and what equipment is used), but I can only find more recent FM's that aren't laid out in the same way and don't have 80's organisational information. |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
search Google for a second hand copy of Isby's 1985(?) book "weapons and tactics of the soviet army" - it has what you need, chapters on organisation, weapons, tactics, equipment etc.
Should be able to find a copy for about 20 UKP/40 USD or so from second-hand booksellers Andy |
Re: campaign: auto-buy
It may be interesting to play PBEM IA purchase. We could do a test battle. Gila if you want to do one but out of "The Blitz" :).
