A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Robert W Chambers once wrote a book that really resounded well with me, about a group of people at the turn of the last century, people connected by a play that existed in their version of the world entitled The King In Yellow. Now, I'm trying to bring that very king to life, the mad king in tattered yellow robes slipping his greesey tendrils into your dreams and wrenching them out to be his grim toys.
I've made two sprites for this god, writen his description and as far as I can tell written him a DM file with no conflicts but I just can't seem to get him to work. So I'm uploading what I've done here in the hopes that you might be able to help me get this enigmatic character ingame and working. Here's hoping. Code:
#modname "The Carcosian Spirit" this is whenever I try to start a new game with him or use the create a pretender function, I've not got very good coding knowledge but I've tried all i can and am now at a loose end, I hope you'll be able to help thanks Iffy. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Maybe the guy has way too many abilities.

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
why reinvigoration?
and who in their right mind would use their pretender as an assassin? That just seems foolhardy. Maybe a high level summon would make more sense? |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Fear 15 on a assassin?
Ps: Wrong subforum. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Also pretenders do not normally have random magic paths. So yes, I'd suggest a high level summon might work better. But, I like the creativity. :)

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
The assassin atribute fits into one of the stories in which the King himself stalks an man through Paris in the twilight, eventualy killing him not through direct action but through the man's own fear of his persuier.
It's more to be in keeping of his character then somthing to be actualy used. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Well, He's showing up in game now, though he's not able to enter combat, the game now throws up a new error - pointless unitfx
I've also made some amendments to his atributes that's less over powered Code:

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
i still think it'd make more sense as a level nine conjuration summon

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
how about, instead of assassinate, he gets something more like seduce commander (but obviously with different effects).
or maybe a vengeance of the dead type of thing? and I still think an assassin pretender would be a very bad idea. and I know nothing about modding, so that stuff I mentioned may not even be possible. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
well, Mictlan already has the Lord of the Night as an assassin pretender choice, so it's not unique. whether it's a good idea or not is an entirely different question, so is whether having Fear 15 on an assassin is ridiculously OP or not.
|
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Well the Lord of Night also has fear, though not 15 so, again, it's not unique.
It would be ridiculously OP as a regular recruitable or summonable assassin, but as a pretender? Even with the fear it's still a risky and not very profitable way to use your pretender. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
15 fear is just a lot. Very easy to increase even. Throw in some death, a fear helmet and you have fear 20. Give dom 9, awe. And you are untouchable.
Ps, random paths on pretenders is a bit bugged, it increases their costs in unexpected ways. I posted about that in the modding forum a while back. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Well, after reinstalling the game from scratch the problem seems to have cleared up, i probably messed up some code somwhere trying to get it working.
thanks for all the help guys |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
15 Fear is a lot. It may well be overpowered. Certainly not untouchable, even with awe, since there are plenty of things immune to fear, most (all?) of which are also immune to awe.
If it's overpowered, it's overpowered in general, not as an assassin. Or at least a singular assassin pretender. The main flaw is that if you can beat armies single handed why are wasting your time killing individuals. And as soon as anyone's seen you, they'll be hunting you down and scripting potential targets to deal with you. He'll also waste plenty of time killing off decoys. And he's not that hard to kill. |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
As I recall there is actually an assassin pretender. But only for Mictlan. The nighthunter or something. But no one ever take him because Mictlan needs a bless build and he only start with blood and death. Also, losing your pretender because the enemy had good patrollers is silly.

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
just pointing out you should ask things about mods in the mods subforum.

Maybe you should avoid spaces in file names, not sure about that |
Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
Oh wow. I've been really obsessing over The King in Yellow / Hastur lately. How ominous that a thread about him would pop up... hm. I'm glad you're on this!

Re: A new pretender. The King in Yellow
I recently played a text adventure invoking this "King in Yellow" play: http://maher.filfre.net/King/
I would use a pretender as an assassin, myself. Under certain circumstances that are yet to be determined. :) |
