Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
Just wondering if it would ever be possible to add little dead dude sprites(somewhat macabre i know) - since I think it would add a little bit (albeit cosmetic only really) however it would be great to review a hard fought battle, and examine er the areas of deathly concentration.
I'm imagining its probably not possible - but just wanted to check what it might entail to do so? (probably adding a code link to a dead dude png or something for a million units hehe) |

One of the totally irritating things about the old "Arnhem" games by Microsoft back in the 90s (Close Combat?) - dead bodies all over the shop lying in puddles of bright red blood, with voices howling over and over "das blut!, das blut!" (or something like that). Gah!... Andy |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
haha you have a point there the das blut was always quite ridiculous!

Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
The great idea would be to add something like "casulties number" to hex! Just a number of casulties that occured in a hex.
A hex with huge casulties number would slow down units and make them more willing to suppressing. This would be really realistic and add new info for viewing battles. |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
I'm hesitant to comment since this idea has been quashed many times on this forum for reasons already stated by the developers. In my opinion, I don't see the reason not to include bodies if wrecks are already there. War is messy.. I've been there. If anything, for game purposes, an infantry squad that takes at least, say, three or more casualties in a hex could show a graphic with two or three bodies. Nothing gory, just some prone bodies. I actually did this in another SP version where I added bodies, blown-off vehicle parts, ammo boxes, etc. to the fire graphics. It made the battlefield look cluttered, which is consistent with real life. After all, 'Mars is not an aesthetic god'. All this being said, we're beating a dead horse here.

Yep fair enough if the developers are against it - thats that - however im curious mkr - you actually did this manually yep? How so?
Sounsd cool! |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
Lawrie, it was just a matter of editing the icon SHP file that contains the fire graphics. Actually, now that I remember, I did for WinSPWW2 during a long campaign as British versus Italians in North Africa. It worked for any unit destroyed, tanks, bunkers, whatever, but it did look strange when trees were set on fire.

That said, since the majority of the infantry casualties represent wounded men that would usually be evacuated to the rear, most of the casualties that take place in the game should not result in corpses being left lying in the ground. |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
Actually, a certain other SP derivative had a special terrain icon file. It contained custom icons, like blown-down trees, dead cattle, hulks, etc., and dead infantry. It was accessed by a special key command, and the user then input the number of the graphic he wanted to use. It was only used in making maps, however, but was excellent for portraying ground that had previously been fought over. I wonder if the developers could implement this.

Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
After just having played an early vietnam scenario which featured in repeated attacks down a road, and the destruction of at least 10 squads within 2 hex area, I think that some graphic acknowledgement of the carnage would have added to the atmosphere of the battle.
I would definitely be in favor of some sort of tasteful and relatively descrete sign of significant casualties in a hex. |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
I remember those special terrain tiles :). Always wondered how they managed that. Used to use them myself quite a bit on maps.
I agree with you guys. Would be very atmospheric. Played the Stalingrad Factory campaign and the carnage was unbelievable at times and I often thought how neat it would be if there had been a few bodies left behind. |
Re: Requests/possibilities of little dead bodies :(
They did it by creating a separate terrain SHP file, ter90zx.shp. It contained at least 300 tiles, if I remember right. Dead cows, blown-down trees, wrecked vehicles, knocked-out guns, aircraft, fences, etc. and dead men. They were simply overlays, ie there was no LOS or MPs attached to them. Pure eye candy.
