A batallion sized force is tasked with pushing through the town of Goodland and capture its airfield. US National Guard units are dug in around the town. *(Map included in zip file). |

The occupation of most of New Mexico by the Central American Peoples Alliance (CAPA) formed by both Cuba and Nicaraguan armed forces takes almost a full week. With the intention to link up with Reconnaisance elements from the Baltic Naval Infantry Brigade of the 55th Soviet Naval Infantry Division, the 2nd Battallion of Nicaragua's "San Rafael del Norte" Brigade simultaneously leads the advance north into Colorado through their first obstacle on their way. Delaying their thrust are elements from the 4th Infantry Brigade, US 4th Infatry Division. *(Map included in zip file). |

Thanks for these - I love that someone's tackling "Red Dawn" for scenarios. I've started working on a bunch myself, set in Northern California, but it's going to be a while before I'm done. My one qualm with "Goodland" is that it's entirely unlikely that American police in the early 80s would have FN FALs. At best, some SWAT units would have M-16s, but rural sherrif's departments wouldn't even have those. Shotguns and bolt-action civilian rifles, at most. |

The Alamo Guards debut, "Red Dawn" series.
After selective nuke strikes and infiltrators successfully destroyed and caused heavy damage to SAC bases and other military installations on Western USA, the US Army lacks sufficient air support for delaying the leading Army group of the Central American Peoples Alliance (CAPA) formed by both Cuba and Nicaraguan armed forces which is tasked by the Soviet High Command to push for the Houston area with the intention of "distract and confuse" US intelligence, nevertheless casualties on both sides are high. While the US army attempts to maintain the lines of defense in Western USA, The Texas National Guard has been mobilized out of the highly densed urban areas to ambush positions in hinterlands and key crossroad positions right between the suspected paths of thrusts across Texas. In this battle Elements from the Cuban 24th Infantry Division and 1st Armored Division make a dawn assault on the western outskirts of the City of Victoria defended by a battallion of The Texas National Guard's 1st Regiment "The Alamo Guards". |
Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Thanks for these scenarios, so far I've played the ones that came with the latest patch and they've been great! I think your design on these is very, very good. Force balance is well done and makes for entertaining fights, you get the feeling that you have to preserve your forces while simultaneously repulsing a numerically superior opponent.
The maps are excellent and evocative. I've enjoyed the wide open spaces of these scenarios, since usually I tend to play on more crowded scenery maps. The American TI equipped tanks are murderous in these battles! As defensive battles against the AI these generally tend to be on the easy-medium level of difficulty, which is fine by me. My toughest fight was easily Goodland, having to cope with the older National Guard kit against the Cubans was something completely different from Robstown and I liked that change of pace. Definitely planning on playing the newer ones too. I hope you keep up with the series! |

Ambush at Vauxhall, "Red Dawn" Series.
While the main Soviet army group with the aid of the Cuban and Nicaraguan Army wreak havoc throughout Western USA and with key passes in the Rockies secured, 3 other army groups are rolling across the Bering Straight cutting the Alaskan Pipeline through Canada with the intention to link up in the middle. The underestimated Canadian army with their scattered pockets of stiff resistance in key roads across Canada have not slowed the Red Advance but it has made it costly enough. In this battle a Soviet Motorized Rifle Battallion leads the assault on the small town of Vauxhall supported by a Tank Battallion encountering well supported and motivated dug in Canadian Infantry. |

Marines at Lake Texana, "Red Dawn" Series.
The Cuban army with the support of Soviet forces advances through Southern Texas both inflicting and taking heavy casualties along the way. While approaching Lake Texana, a Cuban Rifle Regiment size force well supported by armor and artillery bumps into delaying elements of the 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, This would be the USMC first battle against the Cubans in US soil. |

The scouts would have been among the better volunteers (vets still in good health, professional hunters, biathlon/sport shooters and the like), and FN-FALs or AWB-friendly knockoffs were and remain quite common among the more... enthusiastic gun owners of America. Quote:
Available weapons: it's Kansas. Military pattern-weapons weren't exactly hard to find there, even in the 80's. Instead of M16's you might have AR15's or Mini-14's that have been converted to automatic fire, but functionally there wouldn't be that much difference. |

Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Old Ironsides is an *excellent* scenario. Very hard to win more than a marginal victory (as the US player) in its original form. I have had fun tweaking this one, where the US Force is augmented with captured enemy weaponry - some anti-tank guns, a few captured (from the Cubans in other battles!) lighter vehicles (BRDM-2's) and a few outdated helicopters to ferry troops around. Add some Piper cubs for spotting, and it's a real slugfest! I set the Abrams to only go after the heavier vehicles and let the missles, Cobras, and AT-guns pick off the lighter APC's. Lastly, I add my favorite piece of game-chrome: motorcycles! Yeah - a couple of local bands of Hell's Angels get into the fray at some point. They give meaning to the phrase: live fast, die young, and make a good looking corpse!
Anyway - thanks again for this amazing series of scenarios! |
Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Thought I would try this due to your comments & its a great map feels right for the area & it is the sort of place attack helos might lay in ambush or aid support.
The helos make it easy mind you at least so far, plug the odd gap & watch for avenues of approach letting the you take up positions under cover of smoke. The Abrams at least need flank shots for a kill certainty but I have been fighting behind a smoke screen so far so its not been an issue. SPOILER ALERT Moved out fast for first 5 or 6 turns then to combat speed, only shots fired by Russians so far were at my Helos till the planes turned up. They have routed an Abrams & destroyed 2 APCs with squads on board, apart from that only other casualty is 1 man in a dragon team due to artillery. Turn 9 now 29 Russian BMPs or tanks burning only 2 squads & a couple of crew in rout from them survive. Furthest victory flag is 24 hexes away & I can see BTRs heading my way so the dragon teams might finally let off a shot in anger, there are another half a dozen tanks or so still out there that I am aware of. Time to switch arty from smoke & save the last few smoke rounds for any late surprises. I think this might be a good one to try as the Russian side, certainly a more cautious advance will be required. |
Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
There are a few hidden slopes on the map but great really like it. Going to try a few more of these & revisit this with Pattons replacing the Abrams & an extra 10 turns. Ended up just charging at the the end under smoke cover. Ended on turn 14, lost another couple of men to artillery for a total of 24 dead & had a plane shot down. 391 to 16792 final score

Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Interestingly its not so hard from the Ruskie side either though keep in mind I have an idea of what to expect. Its due to the AI not being able to take advantage of its strengths while you as a player can. Just fast advanced leaving tanks in key spots where they might possibly be able to fire at max range & turned their smoke dischargers off. I am safe from frontal hits but can destroy anything if I hit it. All Abrams & one M901 destroyed plus both attack helos as I stopped advancing once they turned up. 3 BMPs & 2 T-72 destroyed & one with no tracks.
Wont be a cake walk but minor victory should be do able |
Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Thanks IMP! A really interesting take on the other side of the coin, so to speak. I did a variant on this scenario set in 1990 - with early Apaches, the next generation of M1-Abrams and some better jets on the U.S. side (one of the new-fangled F-117's that the Canadians let us fly from one of their airbases just across the border <g>) on the U.S. side. And some very nasty Soviet tanks as well - some T-72B's, a few upgraded T-80's, and some BMP-3's. The Soviets managed to bully their way all across the map to get up close and personal with the U.S. infantry. Ultimately, the Abrams ruled the battlefield, but it was actually something of a fight! Still, a decisive U.S. victory in the end.

Re: New scenarios "Red Dawn Series"
Hi, signed up just to say thanks for the great scenarios involving one of the most interesting "what-if?"s to make to the movies! Always thought there was room in that universe to tell so many stories! There are a lot of good ones in those "Red Dawn +20" threads, for example(though lots of silly ones there too). I've been particularly impressed when I compare your maps to the actual locations on google maps. Do you use any special tricks or tools other than diligence? I started a map of part of MO awhile back but found the time and patience required was more than I had at the time, Lots of hills and stuff. I tinker with it every once in awhile but any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, can't wait for the next one!
