March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (Running, 10/12 remaining)

All,

The games I'm in right now are wrapping up or getting towards the endgame and I feel like starting another.

Game is intended to be a newb/intermediate game. To give some guidance I would say fewer than 10 MP games is a good cutoff point. I've got 6 under my belt.

Players 12, Hosted on Llamaserver
Map: Riverlands for 12 + 1
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showpost.php?p=775421

Proposed Rules:
Research: Difficult
Gold: 125
Sites: 55
Hosting: Every 30 hours until a majority want to go longer

All other's standard.

Diplomacy: NAPs not binding, but don't think anyone is going to ever trust you again if you break one. You stab someone in the back expect to get stabbed right back. Trades binding.

All standard exploits banned: Bogarus orders, autospawn locking forts, filling labs, etc.

No nations banned.

I'm taking Marverni

Players (7/12)
Torgon: Marverni
Ulius: Niefelheim
Odeoderok: Sauromatia
HoleyDooley: Abyssia (defeated)
Mattyburn: Caelum
Immaculate: Yomi (defeated)
Dojango: Fomoria
Aderion: Arco (defeated)
Excist: Agartha (defeated)
Sansanjuan: TC
Jotwebe: Pangaea
Shardphoenix: Tir Na'Nog (defeated)

Hi,

I'm a total newb to MP, and my first (different) game is about to start. But I think I can handle another one and would like to join this too.

My race of choice: Niefelheim, Sons of Winter.

odeoderok March 12th, 2012 06:51 AM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92)

Hi all,

I'd like to join as Sauromatia. I've probably played about 10 MPs, but I'm coming back from a bit of a break. And I was rubbish before the break anyway :)

I'll play...Not sure who yet though

Immaculate March 12th, 2012 10:55 AM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92)

In as Yomi.

I also prefer default resources gold and supplies unless there is a good reason for increasing them. I like the extra research and magic sites though...

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92)

Alright we have 6. Four more to go.

Immaculate March 12th, 2012 08:00 PM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (6/12)

Hey Torgan,

I was hoping you might explain why you like the 125% resources, income and supplies? Normally the default sits well and all nations are designed and balanced for default. By increasing these values we practice play that is suboptimal in the majority of games. I was hoping you might provide your insight for the proposed settings.

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (6/12)

I assume you meant "Bogus orders forbidden" instead of "Bogarus orders"?

any rate, I'd like to try formoria.

Torgon March 13th, 2012 01:17 AM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (6/12)

Yep. Typo. Meant Bogarus orders.

As to the settings. The only ones I'd really like to try is the hard (difficult) research and higher magic site frequency. Main reasons are that I want to play a game in which the early and mid game last a little longer before massive battle magic takes over everything, and I like games in which a you see more indie mages popping up.

The 125's were just to make those conventional armies a little bigger and a little more fun and exciting. 125 doesn't seem to dramaticially change how the game is played, but I'm happy to put them back down to 100.

Immaculate March 13th, 2012 09:19 AM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (7/12)

Cool. and i too would like to see a longer early and mid-game so i am happy with slower research.

HoleyDooley March 13th, 2012 09:51 AM

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (7/12)

Agreed. Longer early and mid is good.

I prefer scales set to normal (100) as 125 kind of negates what is trying to be achieved by allowing more income, more castles, more researchers etc.

I think I will go back to my favourite Abysia please.

I have just started Arco in another game and its not going well. I need more experience with them which I shall get in that game.

Cheers.

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (7/12)

Hi everyone,

I would like to join this game. My first choice after looking at the already registered players/nations in the first page was Abysia, but if Holey takes it, I will go with Arco then.

I've made up my mind. I'll try Caelum.

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (7/12)

Hi, I've completed 2 and in 4, 1-2 of which will probably end soon and the other 2, my strata are very simple so I don't foresee having to spend too long on those turns.

I'm trying to decide if I have the time for a 5th, but this is tempting both due to the settings (including the high resource/income) and I'm seeing a lot of my fav peeps in here.

Please hold a spot for me and I'll try to decide tonight if I'm in and select a race from what's available.

My fav race so far is Agartha but I'm always willing to throw some training wheels on a new race and give it a spin.

Also, to support my vote for the scales/research settings, Id like to point out that adjusting both is more balanced than adjusting 1

If you slow down research then you are giving bless strats a boost, whereas if you increase income/resources then you give scales a boost (since each additional +6% from Order becomes effectively +8% for example, and each -6% from sloth becomes -8% after the + 25% modifier and so on for the rest of the scales).

Doing both changes keeps the bless strat nations balanced with the Eco/research nations.

I'd like to go with Pangaea.

Same nation as in A Learning Experience, but different settings and a different build. Hopefully it'll be interesting to see how it'll go... differently...

Please switch me from Ctis to TC (if not taken).

Okay. We're up to 11.

I'll hold it open for one more for awhile longer, but if no one signs up by end of day tomorrow. I'll go ahead and close it off and put the game up on Llamaserver for pretenders.

As far as maps go, for 11-12 I think this version of riverland would be best:

Any objections?

I'm inclined to agree with Excist, if we're going to go with slower research, which it sounds like most everyone wants. I think a slight bump in income is in order.

I think 125 is a good compromise. It doesn't end up being to dramatic but it does help the scales builds early.

Excellent, a wrap around map, my preference over a square, hide in the corner, screwed if your in the middle type map.

Re: March Madness Newb/Intermediate Game (EA, CBM 1.92) (Recruiting 11/12)

I'm going to go ahead and close us off at 11 just so we can get started. Since we're only going to have 11 the Riverlands map might be a little big.

There's another good map by Elmokki with a more reasonable number of provinces for 11 people.

Awesome. Lets launch!

EDIT: Start with a 30h timer instead of 24h. its still a one-day turn-around in 90% of cases but it means that those of us with long work days don't miss out because we submit at 11pm the one night and can't get home until 12 the next... Thanks.

I believe, CBM already bumps scale builds enough. Higher gold will hurt those, who prefer awake SC or high bless. :)

Perfect, Shardphoenix is in and we officially have 12.

Also, I agree with Immaculate on the slightly > 24 h timer. We'll start with 30 hours for now and see how it goes. Anyone have any objections?

Sorry about that guys. Meant to put the game up this morning but I ran in to some unforeseen travel difficulties.

Game is up. Start submitting pretenders and lets get this rolling.

Odeoderok: Sauromatia "cheated"

I had CMB enabled, though it didn't state it in the first post. Correction it did.

EA, CBM 1.92)

Guess Odeoderok: Sauromatia didn't.

WTF, the game says I cheated :)

I designed my god with cbm1.92 on and nothing else, but there's a message that "it's too powerful and has been reduced in power". This has never happened to me before, any ideas what might be causing it?

I have no idea other than incorrect mod at pretender creation, others with more experience might.

Anyway, better prepare another one for when the game gets reset and is awaiting your pretender.

Ok. But since I had cbm1.92 on, the problem will probably just repeat. But we'll see.

Sure, but maybe before we restart someone if they have any other knowledge will lets us know.

Is it a fresh install of Dom3? Correct patch? I don't know, just trying to think of an explanation.

Okay. Game is rolled back to submitting pretenders.

Odeoderok, resubmit your pretender and send me a PM when you have so I know when to restart the game.

All, you just received a second first turn. Ignore that one, I was just double checking that the problem repeated.

Nope. The pretenders are all still uploaded. It's just waiting on me to hit the start button again.

Odeoderok just needs to resubmit after a fresh install. After he has resubmitted I'll start the game back up. Hopefully the problem will not happen again.
