returning spell
HI
I have a question regarding the spell returning. I am often playing LA Marignon cranking a lot of soul contracts. To prevent the losing contract i often put them on my royal navigators and script them to cast returning. Now, if navigator got a lucky pick of S2 everything is ok - he uses his 2 astral pearls and get back to capitol (i am hoarding them in non capitol castle to make returning work). But when the royal navigator has only 1S nothing seems to work. I am trying to give them 3 astral pearls so that he use 1 pearl to improve his S to 2 and other 2 pearls to actually cast returning - but this somehow does not work. Does everybody know how to make spellcasting AI to cast returning on 1S mage? thanks in advance |
Re: returning spell
in fact you cant use more gems than your level.
So a S1 mage can't burn more than one S gem per spell. you could only cast returning with 1S mage if returning had no cost. (spending the extra gem only) |
Re: returning spell
Give your S1 guy an astral booster (crystal coin, starshine cap) or a crystal shield and he'll be able to cast returning.

somehow i missed this... poor navigators... |
Re: returning spell
If you use Ritual of Returning instead of Returning, you can gradually put Returning on all your S1 commanders with just a few starshine skullcaps, and then do something else with the skullcaps. That's something to consider.
The catch is that that kind of returning doesn't work until after a commander takes a hit, and that first hit might still be enough to kill him. But it appears that these navigators have A1 consistently, so you could then give each one a single air gem and have him cast Mistform, maybe... or maybe it's all just too much trouble. :) |
Re: returning spell
not sure mistform will help versus horrors.

Re: returning spell
The point is returning works when you take your first hit. For human hp units, the first hit is often the last, making returning useless. Unless you have mistform, in which case any single attack will always do at most 1 damage. Magical attacks will pop the mistform, but that doesn't matter when you just need to survive one hit.
That said, that's way too much trouble. Just put Soul Contracts on indy scouts, and if they die, they die. It's very unlikely to happen until the late game anyway. |

Re: returning spell
Thanks, I didnt know that. In that case, mistform+ returning sounds like a good idea to me.

Re: returning spell
Maybe not that good - I think, horrors do like 4 attacks per turn. So it depends on how ritual of returning works - does it trigger after first individual attack, or after first attack cycle from a single unit.

Re: returning spell
I just tested it- the ritual of returning kicks in after the first attack, not the first turn. So mistform+ ritual of returning does protect against horrors, and marignon is well suited to benefit from this, though once a unit is very badly horror marked (ie, when doom horrors start to show up every turn), it's probably not worth it to keep spending the gems to recast ritual of returning.

Re: returning spell
a returning story.
i had a pretender that got diseased early in a game. i changed around my research so i could get ring of regen/hydra armor, and then twiceborn(which i didn't end up using). so i am gradually getting afflictions, but my rainbow is still alive. i then realize, hey, i can cast gift of health! so i bankrupt myself to empower a mage plus add boosters, and i'm going to cast it! after 40 turns of wincing every time i clicked my pretender, i am going to start healing him!! i am SO smart! anyway, while my nature mage spools up, and all research is bent on getting us to the level we need to cast gift of health, i move my pretender to search a wasteland... what does this have to do with returning, you might ask? well, the wasteland province gets attacked by 78 barbarians. my pretender has 4 bodyguards and a PD of 5(not enough to even slow the barbarian horde). but that's ok. i had him scripted to cast returning! jesus, i am SO smart again! i am so self satisfied, i guarantee you, reader, you would have been sickened by it. only...i didn't realize, i needed an astral gem to actually CAST returning. so, as i sat smugly watching the barbarians close it, i didn't see returning. i saw my mighty rainbow pop off a few minor evos(who bothers to script their sight searching pretender? i hadn't scripted him since about turn 5-he will never be in battle). and then they hit him. and he didn't 'return'. and then they hit him. and then he died. turns out, i'm not actually all that smart.:hurt: |
