Abandon planet!

Who knows if the abandon planet order is executed before or after ship movements?

Growltigga January 15th, 2002 12:28 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

I think it happens as soon as you hit the 'abandon planet' button doesn't it? I have never noticed any time lag

geoschmo January 15th, 2002 03:00 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

I think CW is asking about in a simultaneous turn game. There is no lag in a single-player or hotseat game. But in a simultaneous turn game you give the order and then it happens during the execution phase on the host machine.

Although I can't say exactly when it happens CW. You could give the planet something in it's queue to build, and then give it the abandon order on the same turn. Then check the construction log to see if it built the item before it executed the abandon order.

you are probably right, I have never played a simultaneous turn game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

Re: Abandon planet!

and you could always take control of an AI and use their ship to attck ur planet and see if it does it, or if the order is executed (as i think it is) as part of the movement phase as an order for the planet. Launching sats/etc. is an order givento the planer as a move order.

Also does anyone know if you can launch subsets of sats/mines. not all of them at once.

OOOOoooo, you might want to practice that a little in single player, it changes the feel of the game a little bit (ie, no tactical combat, etc). Especially since you have this big showdown coming up.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

You are dead right dumbluck http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif , I do need to practice simultaneous games and you can be assurred will be doing so - why do you think I am asking all these questions on strategy tactics etc http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif - still the important thing is to take part, not win http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Abandon planet!

Reguarding the "big showdown coming up". I was wondering if a couple of players would like to help Growltigga and me by playing about 50 turns via email. This would give us a "feel" for the PBEM system. The reason for the limited number of turns is to remove the Win/Lose aspect of the trial.
Thanks

geoschmo January 16th, 2002 04:01 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

I'd be happy to host it and process the turns once you get your players together. You guys can just send me your .plr files each turn. You can just pretend I am the PBW server. Although I am not as fast and not Online 24hrs a day. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

geoschmo,
Thank you for the offer. Growtigga and I will be doing a Play By Email game. I thought it would be useful if we did a short game against a "Mentor" to get the "feel" of how it would work. Is this viable?

Thanks agin

geoschmo January 16th, 2002 05:24 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

Sure it's viable. And I recomend it.

I can host the game if you'd like. I don't really need to play in it. You two can play each other, and invite others if you want.

First thing you have to decide is game settings. Then you have to create and send me your .emp files. I would then generate the first turn and send it back to you and you would play it. fter each turn you would send me your .plr file and I would send you back the next turns .gam file.

Easy.

Another good way to learn fast is to play a simultaneous turn game by yourself against the AI on your own computer. Then you can play each turn and do the host part and process the next turn with no waiting on anybody else. That's a quick way to learn the differences between sim-turn multiplayer and standard single player turn based SEIV.

THe two major differences are your orders don't happen the secoond you give them, they wait until the host process the turn. And there is no tactical combat, so you have to adjust the way you design ships and the makeup of your fleets.

Re: Abandon planet!

G, this is extremely decent of you. Please dont worry about your speed and availability, I do not think the game (even the practice) will kick off until later on in February as (for Gryphin's benefit) I am spending the next week and a half overseas for work (taking a laptop so can still surf the forum)and am then in Arizona for a week and then Madrid for a week. The practice game will kick off after then.

Any suggestion that this delay is because I need to work out how to play the game will be fiercely denied and treated as libel

Geo, you are a gent for offering

Gryphin
Thanks for that - I am really looking forward to Arizona - in no way seeking to offend any Arizonans out there (Alpha Kodiak, Wardad etc), I wasn't looking forward to it at all when I got the wedding invite from my mate - hardly my first choioce of locale - but having bought a rough guide, checked it out and spoken to friends who have been there, I am really excited -there seems an awful lot to see (still shocked about the cost of car hire $300 to hire a Grand Am for one week - robbing swine!!) - Madrid will be cool, I have been before and think it is a great city - Shryka - if you read this, you are a lucky girl indeed to live in Madrid - great place

Just booked my summer holiday as well - two weeks in Bali in September, 1 week in Iclenad in October and looking at 2 weeks in Australia in December - ggod thing about my job is the amount of holiday I get

I too will take full advantage of the time to practice - I have just started a simult game and it is very very different

QUESTION - using the load cargo order, is there any way to limit the amount of cargo your freighter actually picks up (save manually using the transfer cargo order) other than a full load?

Again, Geo, you are a gent and should be entered in the SEIV annals as St Geo the first

Re: Abandon planet!

Growltigga, I lost count of then number of days you have off, I get a total of 15, ant the Last 5 I have to beg for. I was adding up your airfare in my head and wondering how you can growse about the cost of a car rental. I have photos from hikes I have taken in the area around Tucson. I grudgingly admit my X the pic of the sunset.
http://www.windingstream.com/arizona.html

Looks like I better start a simultaneious game. Thanks for the suggestion.
Happy landings.

Re: Abandon planet!

Gryphin, I get 35 days off a year but I have 26 to carry over from Last year and 17 from the year before that so it gives you an idea of how able we are to take them - I lose all accruals if I dont take them this year so provided that the global recession does kick in, I intend to spend as much time as possible lounging around on a foreign beach looking at bikini clad girls

Is that a picture of you on a rock or a snapshot of a small furry woodland creature, I couldn't tell

After 9/11 the airfare was cheap - I have airmiles so flights for two cost me $100 - how is that for a deal?

great photos - not a line dancer in sight which is just what I like

Re: Abandon planet!

Still I suspect you work 60 plus hours a week. I only "work" 40, but a lot of that is "play" to me. Hmm, like right now when I should be installing software. Yes that is not me, though you could mistaken me for a wolverine, porqupine, and owl if you get to know me.
Enjoy the girls, I'll settle for one I meet on a mountain trail someday. Beaches bore me. There are a few pics of my face on the Comments page. Ok, now enough Off Topic

Re: Abandon planet!

Oh, Febuary. I though you wanted to start something sooner than that. I should hope PBW will be back up by then. You won't really need me to host it. Of course if you have any questions about how to start it, or still want a third party to be the game owner, let me know.

If PBW is not back up by then, well I'll be sad.

Geo
I personally would still like you involved on the 50 turn practice session - your input as an old pro of SEIV would be much appreciated.

I have no idea how to start a game off, what is a ".prl" file anyway

you must understand that me and computers have an arrangement where generally we dont bother one another

geoschmo, Growltigga,
I'm ready to try a 50 turn game if you are, BTW: my email is: gryphin@windingstream.com if that makes communication easier. I also have

Looking foward to playing human or Growtigga.

Growltigga,
Mea Culpa, Bad sentence structure.
< bemused innocent grin >.
I was thinking, is it also time for us to create a “Topic” Growltigga vs Gryphin?

Growltigga January 17th, 2002 07:36 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

may be, but <cue cunning idea m'lord> if people ever get interested on how the game goes, it gives old St Geo a chance for some involvement ie he could do a weekly/bi-weekly 'pathe' news style of report on what is going on in the game - y'know, the sort of thing eg 'headline - this week GT tried to attack a black hole'

could be a laugh but then, I say that about watching paint dry

Gryphin January 17th, 2002 08:48 PM

Re: Abandon planet!

geoschmo,
How does a separate "Topic" Growltigga vs Gryphin
I see this a place we can:
Post progress on the game
Exchange "Friendly" Barbs, (accidental or otherwise)
Give new players an idea of how we do it
Give others things to watch out for: Such as Fleet Strategies
If you would like, as Growltigga suggest, you could post the progress.

Gryphin January 18th, 2002 02:27 AM

Re: Abandon planet!

Growltigga,
Enjoy Arizona, I envy you. I will take full advantage of the time to practice the game. I hope you get a chance as well. Ok, I admit, I'm adicted and that is why I'll be playing.
Thanks again geoschmo.
