Flashpoint Ukraine - Original SSI SP2 Scenario

1 Attachment(s)
Gentlemen -

I recreated the original SSI SP2 scenario, Flashpoint Ukraine, for WinSPMBT. This is my favorite Steel Panthers scenario of all.

I played as Ukraine v. Russia, but accidentally saved over it, so I don't have the results. I did have my *ss handed to me by the Russians by turn 9, however, but managed to kill a lot of their tanks and helos.

Switched sides and played as the Russians, and scored a minor victory. Results are as follows -

Russia - 42 men, 2 PCs, 2 tanks, 1 helicopter - 3555 points
Ukraine - 141 men, 3 mortars, 3 PCs, 8 tanks - 1321 points

Try it and let me know if it's too imbalanced. I kept as close as possible to the original scenario. It's getting late here, but let me know if there needs to be adjustments. I had a lot of fun with it, hope everyone else does too.

Congratulations on the adaptation of this fine scenario, really enjoyed it through, got a marginal victory on turn 12. Managed to save two T-72s from those aggressive choppers. Balance of forces seem ok.

Thanks for the comments. I gave the Ukrainian ZSUs 0 ammo for their Strelas, thinking that at least allowing the Spetsnaz to land would make for a more exciting game, and it does. But, it makes for a hell of a fight trying to handle the armor and special forces landings at the same time.

Simple quickplay scenario ended on turn 9 I think but found it dead easy.
Ukraine - Russia
Men 17 - 122
APCs 0 - 3
AFVs 1 - 7
Air 0 - 3
Points 4671 - 232
Decisive Victory

I lost 1 of the 3 forward squads as he was sacrificed to slow the advance while the 2 with RPGs moved to take position for rear shots once they past the woods. Result 2 tanks destroyed & a BMP3 immobilized.
Dealt with the helos on turn 6 then lost the ZSU-23 stupidly as forgot to replace the smoke it was fighting behind.
Killing the tanks was easy most killed by squads traping in crossfires, at least half died to rear shots.
Maybe I was lucky but turning down the range on a few units including the AAA & then letting them lose once the trap was sprung seemed to do the trick.

Nice small scenario!

I had a Marginal Victory, but I would classify it as a draw in reality. For me the difficulty level was good.

I would have done better I think, but I missed one attack helicopter that destroyed three of my tanks and forced the remaining ones to go hiding. I had run out of ZSU-23 ammo and AA missiles so that one attack helo continued to haunt me to the end. The enemy para troopers were not successfull though and got desimated along with their transport helos.

Btw. I just had to try the old SP2 scenario after I played this one and I really got my a$$ handed to me in that one. I guess my SP2 skills are abit rusty. :D

In that original SP2 scenario the transport helicopters came in from the South of the map and managed to land all the para troops safely with just a couple of transport helos damaged. My tanks could not hit the enemy tanks/helos all that well and the AA & AT rockets for my infantry seemed ineffective and poor in accuracy.

For some reason the Russian A0 unit "T-80UM1 Bars" appears to have no icon. Anyone else seeing this? In the oob editor the unit has an icon so I´m guessing it is a bug in the scenario not the game itself. Or then I have somehow managed to mess up my game files.

Thanks for the comments! Glad you enjoyed it, am planning on cranking out more SP2 scenarios. I'm thinking the T-80 icon issue is on your end. This scenario was designed in v.6, and it's the first time I've heard of that issue.

I can confirm Rosollia's observation.

There is no RUS A0 icon on my machine either and i'm fully updated.

Problem solved - I was the one who wasn't fully updated, and I apologize for my error. I should have known when BMDs were appearing in Rossolia's screenshot rather than the appropriate BMP-3s. Updated scenario added to the initial post - now occupies slot 299.

What does it take to get a Decisive Victory?

No matter how badly I slaughter the Russians (the game always finishes early, usually by turn 6 or 7), I get a Marginal Victory. And I usually have about a 4500:3-400 score in my favor.

As this scenario is being play tested ATM,i don't think you should be asking how to beat it yet.

I've played this one and also got a marginal, difficult, but not too incredibly hard,,however IMP got a DV and found it "dead easy" in his words.

And your term of "slaughter" is not correct as is seems you got on the bad end the stick also eh?

This why feedback helps the designer on how the final version should be.

@ no one in paticular,

I can never understand why taking every VH or destroying every unit is so important.

A victory at any means a victory, whether a limited one,i can't think of one single battle where every thing went as planned and a perfect victory.

There will be causlities, inflicting more on your opponent and getting less for you, is in war is key, and in this game;)

Rant over(-;

Yeah, I need to go back and bump up the VH points. But I agree, Gila. As the designers repeatedly say, the game is an abstraction, so we need to use our imaginations to make it work the way we want.
