Modify objective flags - mod request

Can objective flags be changed?
If so I would like to request a mod similar to the ID flag mod, in this case I would like to see the flags as small as i the ID flag mod but moved down in the hex, this way the flags could be turned on all the time.

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

How about using roundels instead of flags for the Victory Hexes?

They would be half the size on average, so would obscure a lot less of the hex.

Something like this:

Neutral V-Hexes would be a cross hairs:

Looks great. Especially the Polish one.

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

Yeah, agreed, they look great.

The problem with the Polish LWP is that they used the same roundels... However, I have found a unique symbol that could perhaps be adapted to a roundel (the so-called "Russian chicken"): http://www.loeser.us/flags/images/po...ly_22_1944.png

In case you're wondering about the Yugoslav ones, first one is up to April 1941, second is from May 1941 onwards:

If Poland continued to use the same roundel, how about keeping it but adding a hammer and sickle to distinguish it from the earlier Polish roundel, or are they too similar?

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

For soviet Polish forces you can go with something totally different then II RP. Like red&white circle/square one inside other with big hammer&sickle on it.

You're doing great, and I would be able to see a bridge below an objective flag.

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

How about one of these for Poland LWP, or should the hammer and sickle be in there somewhere?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...oland_comm.png

The above are just initial art so the 'pink' colour will be red like the regular Polish roundel.

For the generic red, green, blue flags I thought I'd use these:

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

I like #1 for Polish LWP best (you should remove the eagle's crown though - crowns were a no-no in communist symbolism).

A hammer and sickle sign is not needed in my opinion; it was not used on military flags or even the national flag.

By the way, don't forget one for pro-allied Italy (post-September 1943). It looks like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Force.svg.png

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

Yes, the crown had to go when the communists took the country. Otherwise 1 & 2 are fine.

Re: Modify objective flags - mod request

Didn't think of the crown...that of course must go.

I believe the game only recognises two Italys, with only two flags that I'm able to replace:

The first is 'Italy' and is available from 1930 to 1946
The second is Italian Social Republic from Oct 43 to Apr 45

As most wargaming against 'Italy' would be with them as Axis in North Africa, I'd rather use the black and white roundel.

Spain was a bit tricky, as was Britain and Commonwealth

Britain and Spanish Republic up to Mar 1931
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Spain.1930.png

Canada and Spanish Republic from Apr 31 to Apr 39
Canada used British RAF roundels, so I just gave them the dark surface roundel with yellow ring.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...pain.31-39.png

ANZAC and Nationalist Spain from Jul 36 to Dec 36
Fortunately both Australia and New Zealand used this roundel, adding the red kiwi and kangaroo in 1946.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...Spain.1936.png

Nationalist Spain from Jan 37 and India
I gave India the Commonwealth SE Asia roundel.

Correction: Australia didn't use the red kangaroo until 1956, and New Zealand adopted the red kiwi in 1970.

Interwar German roundels are tough to nail down. These roundels are taken from the interwar German military flags. A white border makes the cross stand out better on some backgrounds

Germany 1933 - 1935
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...man1933-35.png

USMC Roundel should be like this:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...undel_1912.png

But using the central part may work better for now - until I get the time to try and jam the whole blinking roundel into 25 pixels across - and it also happens to be the US Army Air Force roundel.

I think this mod is finished unless I missed any?

I released the 1.0 version of this mod for download here:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showt...024#post821024

I had to start a new thread, or I wouldn't be able to edit the post that contains the mod, as only OPs can be edited at any point in the future.

Can you just think about it for WinSPMBT?

Thanks

I don't play SPMBT that much, preferring to play WW2 when I have the time, but I'd be willing to help out.

Ideally, someone else will take my idea, and any useful artwork, and make a SPMBT version of the mod. I would volunteer technical and artistic assistance if needed.

A second option, would be for someone to do the research, so they know which flags should be replaced by which roundels, and provide the original art from websites like these:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Roundel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_air_forces

Then I'd just need to convert the images to miniature BMPs and those to SHP files.

You could start a thread over on the SPMBT site and see if anyone wanted to take on the project.

I can gather the information on Monday.
I just never used to modding tools.
Is there only one objective flag possibility for a whole 1946-2020 period, or several are allowed?

The mod can only replace existing objective flags.

If a nation/OOB only uses one flag from 1946-2020 then they can only have one roundel.

If a nation uses one flag up to 1960 and then another from 1961 to 2020, that nation could have one roundel up to 1960 and another roundel from 1961 to 2020. Or both flags could be replaced by the same roundel - if appropriate - then the nation would only have one roundel from 1946 to 2020.

In most cases roundels change when flags change, because roundels usually represent the flags/heraldry in some way.

Nations sometimes change roundels even though their flags have not changed. Which will likely be more of an issue over the 75 years of SPMBT than it is for the 17 years of SPWW2.
But in those cases you'd have to decide to go with the most recognisable, longest serving, or perhaps the most recent roundel.

With a project like SPMBT (with almost 100 nations) you may want to just create a mod for the most used OOB.

When I see France's roundel the dot seems quite dark, unlike light one here:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...efore_1945.svg
Is it a limitation of colour palette, or did you used the post '45 one?

Why does the Great Britain's one has a black outer circle instead of that one?

The palette is very limited in the blues, yellows and reds.
Look at the limited colours on the vanilla flags.

The only real choices for France:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ce_roundel.png

I went with 1.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi..._A_Roundel.svg

That roundel was only used from 1929 to 1938, and a similar roundel (with larger red centre) was used after 1947; according to this site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force_roundels

I went with a very dark blue outer circle for Britain. The blue is darker than I would like, but I think it may be the only option for a WW2 British roundel.

Here's the palette:

Make sure you read through this post here:

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/showthread.php?t=47320

I also recommend you download the BMP collage for Icon0095.shp and Icon0096.shp (using ShpEd) so you can see all the vanilla objective flags and quickly identify which to replace and what their image # is within the shape file.

Here's PNGs of the MBT objective collages:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...T_Icon0095.png

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...T_Icon0096.png

You can see that the individual images are 40x25 pixels. Most flags are 37x22 pixels with a 3 pixel shadow.

The roundels I made were mostly 25x25 pixels (no shadow) but some were 24x24 when the design required an even number of pixels.

You could start a thread over on the MBT mods section if you think you may need help, or post here if you want.

It's a bit a pity that this mod replaces the country flag at the "Start turn" screen and at the top of the right panel when playing.

(I'm studying the link you pasted)
