PBW Tournament: Universe Cup - IT\'S OVER!!!

Now that PBW is back Online and running, I'm happy to announce a new tournament: The First Universe Cup. Of course, there's no real Cup, and control of the universe is not transferred to the winner, but let's just pretend, shall we? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

This tournament has several important features. I know some of these features will deter some players, but the object was to create a tournament structure that removed the element of chance from SE4.

------------

1. All games will be played 1 on 1, and all games will be played on the same map. This map has been devised to be as fair as possible, up to the point of being rotationally symmetrical.

The map will be available for review by all players before the start of the tournament. While this might eliminate exploration of the galaxy for the purposes of finding new planets, it does not eliminate exploration to find out what your adversary is up to.

2. In order to make the map small enough to play a two-player game on, all of the planets are of two types: Rock/Oxygen, or Ice/Hydrogen. Obviously, one player takes one, one takes the other for each game.

3. There will be two rounds of play. The first round will be a pooled round-robin. The contestants will be divided into several pools (number to depend on the number of entrants), and within each pool, each contestant will play every other pool member.

So, with 24 entrants, there would be four pools of six players each. In the first round, each player would play five games simultaneously, one against each other contestant in his pool.

The top N players from each pool plus M wild-cards based on record within the pool will advance to the second round, which will be a standard double elimination tournament. N and M will vary depending on the total number of players, but will likely add up to 8 for <32 entrants, or 16 for >32 entrants. (N.B.: M may be equal to 0).

4. The round robin will be played with Version 1.49. The second round MAY be played using Gold, depending on a vote of the players who advance.

------------

All this may be slightly confusing, but because all games will be played 1 on 1, the tournament should move rather quickly--especially in the round robin, in which many games will be played simultaneously. (The round robin will also be a unique test of PBW, as, with the maximum of 64 players, there will be a total of 224 games simultaneously being played).

If you're interested, please either:

1. REPLY to this thread;

2. SEND EMAIL to es2@pbw.cc

I hope you'll be interested in playing what is, I think, the largest SE4 tournament to be put on yet. Happy playing!

Eric Snyder II

(Quick note: This tourney is not sponsored by PBW, Malfador, or Shrapnel. It's just for fun, and huge bragging rights.)

A bump, and clarifications:

All settings will be default, except a) no AI players; b) maximum ships/units available; c) no random events.

a) Because each game must be mano a mano.
b) Because there's no reason to set them otherwise.
And c) in keeping with the idea of removing all randomness from the game.

You should wait for the gold Version to start this. Otherwise, the second player in each game is at a significant disadvantage in warp point battles.

What kind of turn frequency are you thinking? Even two turns a day will take some time to finish a game, even with a smaller universe.

During the round robin, this shouldn't be a problem, as everyone will be player 2 a nearly equal number of times. If people were that worried about it, we could double up on the games; they'll all be at the same time.

The plan is to use SE4 Gold for the second round, where this would be more of a problem.

Two turns a day might be possible for some people, and I wouldn't expect the game to take longer than 150 turns--and some games will likely end in surrender before that. Thus, I expect the first round to Last about four months.

Note that because there are only two players per game, each player can send in a turn, wait for the turn to process, and send in a second turn immediately following. This will keep games moving along at a solid pace. Are you interested?

avdb: Please let me know what your PBW screen name is. Otherwise, I can't add you to the tourney list.

Hey all. Several things:

1. Look for yourself to have been assigned to a game called "Holding Pattern." It won't be a playable game, just a place to gather everyone until the tourney starts, or I set up a real mailing list, whichever comes first.

2. "avdb," you say to count you in... but I really need your PBW screen name before i can do so. Please post it here or email it to me at es2@pbw.cc, ASAP.

3. georgig, are you out there? You posted on PBW's forum, but with no text, so I'm not sure if you're interested in the tournament.

4. SLOTS ARE STILL OPEN! Yes, that's right, you still have a chance to compete. Just post here, or to the Universe Cup thread on PBW, or email me at es2@pbw.cc.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a tournament was started. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Anyone who was in this, or rememebers hearing about it, you might be interested in knowing we finally have reached the championship round.

RexTorres made it through round two without a loss. He will be facing Georgig who made it through round two with one loss, to Rex as a matter of fact.

The Chapionship round will be one or two games. If Rex wins the first he is the champion.

Good luck to both.

Entry 12 605
RexTorres stole some glory which should have been rightfully mine should I had played that game. Have a proxy stab him in the back as soon as I find a game in which we are not playing together.
Then tell him dogscoff plotted his betrayal to solve Grief Entry 11 389.

Yep, congrats! Rex and his runner-up, georgig, were the only two who defeated me in the tournament. Very strong players.

Georgig??? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif So all that friendly Phong and Linux penguin stuff was just a facade... he might never have attacked ME in a game, but that's just because I posed no threat... he wanted to take out someone who could actually stop his ruthless empire of deviousness... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
