WinSPMBT version 10.0b Upgrade patch

As usual we remind everyone that on going secure PBEM games WILL fail if a new patch is applied while they are being played.

22 New Scenarios
12 Revised Scenarios
28 New or Revised Map files
180 New or Revised Photos
323 New or Revised Icons
93 Updated OOB Files
16 New or Revised Icon Graphic files
1 New or Revised Text files
115 Revised picklist files
Upgraded Game Options
Upgraded ScenHack

The game will now detect if Taskbar autohide is on when running in windowed mode and warn the player that this may cause problems . The game will now post an error message if in windowed mode if it finds auto-hide ON. Players have the option to ignore this or cancel out of game to fix auto-hide. To turn the check ON or OFF there is new line added to GameOptions in the MISC tab.

The Y key Range menu hot-keys now work properly.

There was a bug where if you loaded a game after an AI assault or advance. The old programmed fire block was not being cleared down, leading to odd behaviour (either your or the AI batteries would use the old data sometimes), requiring you to press the "clear programme" key to stop this happening for you to return the batteries to your control. This has been corrected and now works as intended

Autocannon firing indirect fire now use the correct explosion graphic, rather than the small single explosion.

Indirect artillery which is not located now produce less smoke, thus being less likely to give their position away.

Using Z fire ( area fire ) if enemy units are 30 hexes away or less away has a slightly increased chance per shot fired of the firing unit being spotted. So there is now a potential penalty for indiscriminate Z fire use

winSPMBT end date is now 2025

Setting OOB vehicle unit survivability to 7 gives that vehicle the same crew/ vehicle survival chance from of mine attacks as one in a normal MRAP unitclass and in game terms that is a slight increase to crew survival over a unit set to survivability=6. Remember this is mainly related to crew survival of mine attacks NOT survival of the vehicle itself.

Turkey VS Mujahadeen , battle locations (batlocs) are in Syria post 2013 and Mujahadeen uses ISIL forces. Also Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Gulf States, Saudi Arabia (generic Middle East) Israel VS Mujahadeen - generic middle east locations, v ISIL post 2013. Mujahadeen v Mujahadeen post 2011, uses Syrian batlocs, post 2013 uses ISIL troops (Syrian civil war)

Afghanistan battles in winter can now produce snowy maps, especially in mountain maps.

UK specific town battle locations to Afghanistan (Sangin, Musa Quala etc) have been added.

A bug whereby arty with high skills got an 0.6 initial delay off gold spots has been corrected, the minimum initial delay is now 1.0.

PGM ( precision-guided munition ) from aircraft will now work like HEAT on hard targets, even if it is an HE type weapon (has to be as an air weapon for aircraft). If the AP pen is 222 coded ( and all relevant weapons now are...), it will strike any hard target hit as HEAT using the HEAT pen value.

A new NLOS missile weapon class has been added which can be directed only by FOOs ( but this includes HQ's and light helos) at any located unit on-map. They can be fired at all targets, regardless of ammo. (uses PGM HEAT test for Ap value). NLOS missiles fired direct by ATGM vehicles act as a top-attack ATGM. NLOS missile firing is only available to the extended game / CD owners and is not available with the free demo version.

22 pages of suggested OOB changes and/or corrections have been reviewed , researched and applied to the game along with a number of changes we made to enhance OOB accuracy and / or completeness.

NEW for the extended CD version holders only

Additional new status information is now shown at the bottom of the screen. If the status is pinned, the status line is yellow, if retreat or worse, it is red. If suppressed more than 1, that is highlighted in yellow and Damage is now shown. In green if 0, otherwise in red.

Scenhack has a new SQL sort facility. This will allow extended game/ CD holders to sort scenarios by the follow methods

Scenario ID - ( the current default sort )

Scenario date - creates a list of all the scenarios in the game sorted earliest to latest. Handy for anyone interested in a specific time period

Battle type - if you are only looking for assault scenarios for example this is will give you a list with all battle types grouped together

Player 1 ID - if you are looking for all scenarios with Poland ( for example ) as player 1 the list will order all scenarios by player 1 nation ID

Player 2 ID - as above but the list will be ordered with the priority being Player 2.... If you want to find all the scenarios Great Britian is the opponent the answer is now one click away

Scenario length - If, for example, you only have time for a short game and don't want to spend an hour of more looking through every scenario to find one for you to play with one click a list will be provided of all scenarios in the game ordered by length from shortest to longest

You can also search by scenario title

Quote:

FURTHER INFORMATION

When you press the SORT tab for the first time the game creates information tables based on what you have in you scenario folder. Not everyone will have the same info as not everyone only has the stock scenarios in their Scenarios folder so players need to be aware that during the reading phase that usually takes under a minute, any extra scenarios that may have been created or modified will also be added to this list so remember this is not just a list of the standard as released game scenarios but every scenario in your scenario folder. Players should also remember that this reading of scenario data ONLY occurs when you first press the SORT tab.....any new scenarios you add after that will not be automatically read into the list so as you add new scenarios you will need to remember to press the CREATE TABLES button to get those scenarios into the data base

Pressing the WRITE CSV button a "Save As" screen will appear and you will be able to create a printable CSV record of this information

Pressing SEARCH TITLE will produce a list of all scenarios with a key word......for example of you recall a scenario you played had the word "hill" in the title.... a search for "hill" will produce a list with all the scenarios with that word in it

You will also see a RUN SQL button. That allows players to further refine their search using the data headers. For example the default for search title is ORDER BY Scenid and the list will be produced in scenario ID order but if you wanted to create the list by year you would change "ORDER BY Scenid" to ORDER BY syear and the list would show scenarios by the year they are representing

<BIG><B><BIG>ADDITIONALLY </BIG></B><BIG>---- The AI pathfinding routines have been tweaked in the extended CD version . For obvious reasons I won't go into detail about what was done except to say the AI will now be less likely to think roads are wonderful things to advance down</BIG></BIG>

With out a doubt one of the best updates yet. Especially like the upgrade to the status information screen. Having the game extended to 2025 is helpfull too, makes the game feel more modern.

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

I am a bit anxious about the new feature regarding hull/turret turn triggering opfires. Don't be offended please, I'm sincerely asking since this is one of the most fundamental mechanics of the game that has been changed, thus the repercussions are going to be far and wide.

1. As someone already asked (on that thread discussing this topic): what about "harvesting" enemy opfires thus clearing the way for other units to advance? This is especially obvious since no Movement Points are expended for turret/hull turning (if I understand the feature correctly). Even more so because all players in the decades of playing SP have been conditioned to turn their units freely to look around the map (sometimes you can spot previously hidden enemy units too). They can't be easily held accountable when someone accuses "you're CHEATING!"

2. If I understand correctly, infantry units too may attract opfires when they're rotated/turned? Isn't this a bit too far? Standard military procedure for a single infantry squad is to establish 360 degree awareness. It's not too obvious to turn one's shoulder/neck/head (compared to turning a tank's hull/turret). Besides, infantry units are composed of individual man, so the unit's facing is very flexible, even multiple directions at once. Sure, there's a "general direction" that an infantry unit must face, but my bottom line is that infantry units are much more fluid & flexible & not too obvious when they're "turning around", compared to tanks and other such vehicles.

3. Why no movement points? As #1 suggests, giving MP penalty for turning/rotating around may discourage players to easily dry out the enemy's opfire. Besides, turning/rotating is indeed moving (even more so with tanks etc, it's quite a movement), so it's only normal that movement points should be expended. If Andy wants it KISS thus no MP penalty, I'd say, why bother with this feature at all? Without this feature everything already works good & fine. Inventing this feature may seem easy coding-wise (as Andy has said on that other thread), but the implication & repercussion isn't so easy since this is a fundamental mechanic of the game.

4. Right clicking an enemy unit now automatically orients both the turret & the hull toward that enemy unit. Right clicking on an empty hex just turns the turret. But what if I want to turn both the turret & the hull, when there's no enemy around? Say, if I want to set up the defence of my tanks before any enemy shows up?

5. Is the AI aware of this new feature also? In some way or the other this may handicap the AI even further, not to mention human exploitation for it.

Now, someone may unload his wrath upon me for being late in the discussion and take on the developer decision directly. But sire, do I have a really great apprehension about this new feature since it's so fundamental to the game mechanics! I am sincerely afraid that this may break my favorite game of all time :( I am more than happy to be proven wrong regarding my apprehension.

I'm just expressing food for thought here guys, please place good discussion & arguments above emotions. If someone thinks he's too good to act decently on the forum, I'd suggest may we meet face to face as a gentleman, how'd he like that?

Cheers!

This has already been discussed in the "vehicle facing" thread, which is only about number 5 in the forum.

Basically - you wont get any free recce for turning in place any more. Looking in a new direction gives you a new look, and this will now sometimes be penalised by enemy opfire.

It takes a game or so, and then it is second nature to not spin like tops.

Agreed it breaks with "tradition" but checking LOS from your unit without moving anything can be done with the } shortcut or the unit view button on screen. That lets you check your LOS without spinning your tank around and in reality no commander is going to do that in RL, it would be like waving a red flag all we've done is acknowleged that fact and added the CHANCE ( it's not 100% certainty ) that stationary hull/ turret movement is going to attract attention to yourself......movement in battle ALWAYS attracts unwanted attention.

.... and I REALLY don't understand the "you're CHEATING!" comment. Everyone is playing by the same rules

Because we decided charging MPs was going to far........doesn't it make sense that a tank that is still would attract less attention than one spinning it's turret around or shifting it's hull left and right ?

Then go ahead and do it........you can't attract opfire when there are no enemy units around to alert .

The AI does not have to spin itself around to know you are there if it's already spotted you....have you ever seen the AI spin it's tanks around like a human player would ? No.

YES it will take a game or two for some players to get used to it. Anytime we change anything we risk making some players unhappy while make others happy. Ask yourself WHY you want to spin your tank around to look at things ( mainly because it's easy and what people have been doing for years ) but we already have ways to look around the map and see what you need to see without spinning the tank around and the game acting like all that movement is not happening....But, in the end if the change ends up universally unloved we can always change the code back but this really needs to be played with for a few games before jumping to any conclusions about it.

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

I think it's basically a good rule, because if tanks can change their facing, they should receive opp. fire with the same probility as if they were moving to a new hex. The way it is now, a tank can face forward even when their withdrawing (not just the destination hex, but each hex between) to a better position on the battlefield.

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

It's not the tanks that are the issue it's how the change interacts with infantry combat

Any game engine change runs the same risk, that's the nature of programming. Over the years many improvements have been made and while some have had "issues" they invariably get resolved, sometimes with a hotfix if the issue is severe enough.

I've never seen the game code but from what Andy and Don have said it sounds like typical spaghetti code. Having worked with such things in the past myself I stand in awe of anyone that can retain their sanity working on it year after year.

You can say that again. Some cats got it and some ain't. Just one semester of BASIC was enough to convince me that programming was far beyond my puny abilities.

Still, it seems calling Andy a God may be going too far. How about Demigod? :)

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

PLEASE NOTE

We pulled the <turret and/or hull facing changes *MAY* now draw enemy opportunity fire> change because the code change spilled over to infantry and the least change of facing for an infantry unit was drawing a furious opfire reaction and I could see this being used to deliberately soak up opfire by units in well protected positions. We will look at it again over the summer.

Btw, I wonder this:
93 Updated OOB Files
115 Revised picklist files
How I always thought that there's only 1 picklist/OOB:O... Which oob has more than 1 picklist?

Warhero

Mobhack March 31st, 2016 02:30 PM

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

OOBS can have several pick lists. One when playing vs NATO, another set when playing against Mujadeen etc. And the pick lists for all can(usually will) vary due to era, even if they do not vary on opponent ID. Because OOBS usually change organisation at least once in the MBT time frame. Or the points values used for decisions need updating - a Korean war tank platoon may cost 700 points, but a 2000s MBT platoon, 3-4000 or whatever.

The MBT pick lists are data driven, as opposed to being hard-coded as in WW2. This was supposed to be easier than code, but on reflection its more painful to work with chains of external data than say a simple "if opponent==Iran And DateInRange(Y1,Y2) then Rifleplatoon=24". If I were to do it over again, it would be back in a module of code, as that's actually far simpler to manage.

But end users dont need to know anything about the pick lists since they are game data. Only a select few end users have been instructed in the dark rituals:shock:.

All any end user needs to know is that "115 pick lists" means that a fair old amount of OOB work was done for the patch.

DRG March 31st, 2016 03:05 PM

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

There are over Eleven Hundred picklists in MBT so 115 is about 10%

And that one line explains why its unlikely a game like this will ever be created again.
Makes you realise adding a new OOB or extending a time frame takes far more work than you might think.

yes that was the question

Re: WinSPMBT version 10.0 Upgrade patch

The answer then is yes. I've had the "luck" of having at least two or more campaigns going at once vs. the AI, and I've never had an issue with any patch upgrade affecting my campaigns for either game. So you will be good.

But just as a general reminder load your patches in order and take the proper precautions before downloading the patch during an active PBEM game. Don't remember exactly what it was (Finish it I think before downloading.) but, Don makes a point of reminding everyone of what has to be done before downloading the patch anyway in BIG BOLD LETTERING.

Have fun and enjoy the game(s) with confidence!
