One proposal

Maybe I have bad eyes nowadays as I don't see sometimes locations of my troops enough clearly in small map (in battle generator):re:... I think that light yellow colour is not suitable for (especially) winter white background. It's better in summer/autumn maps but not in wintertime. Any possibility to change colour in code (how about some red shade?

Are you talking about the mini-map, or the main map?

Small=mini map

Re: One proposal

I have been musing about a simplified "radar map" mini map view for a while now.

Just our troops and his only
Very limited terrain (say water, buildings and roads. maybe trees)
On a green background perhaps?

That would simply show the current correlation of forces and little/no "clutter".

I understand what you mean when you say the yellow pixels that mark where your units are can be a bit difficult to see at at times but I don't understand what you mean in regards to "It's better in summer/autumn maps but not in wintertime"........

...........the mini map does not change with the seasons....

Re: One proposal

I think it is on topic, since when I can remember playing the game, I always had an issue on winter maps (main map), looking at it for long periods. The so much white with looking for details (units etc), seriously hurts my eyes if I play more than few minutes. I don't have this problem with other white things (games or outside of gaming), though I admit I never went skiing.

I am not expecting any options for this, just letting it out. Some one could ask me what on Earth could be done about it, even if it could/would. My answer is...no idea. An option to change snow to a different color perhaps, or pressing a key have the map change shade/color, I don't know.
Anyway, not expecting anything as I am sure this is not something that affects many.

There are other primary colour variations we could try besides yellow but we cannot use red.....that's the enemy colour which would just add to the problem

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attac...1&d=1490026530

The problem is it's impossible to make everyone happy and some may like the yellow and object to green or blue......IDK lets get some feedback.

MY first impression would be the blue as a better " quick glance" colour on the mini.

However........

The mini map is in our opinion, more use as a way to move quickly to another point on the map outside the viewing area and was for more useful before " desktop mode " That said it can be handy if you want to move from HERE on the map----to----THERE on the map quickly but you can find your troops MUCH easier with the ID tags on and if you don't like playing with them on all the time zoom out and turn them on and it's like having a giant mini map

What about white color for the units in the mini map?
Green looks IMO too close to terrain features. Not sure how blue would look in urban environments either. Blue and gray tend to mix.

Further to this

Here's the problem that develops with blue

I added graduated darker brown's so that map contours could be easily seen and when you get to higher elevations blue doesn't work so well

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attac...1&d=1490030173

and we are right back to what I suggested in the last one, when you have trouble finding your units then you need to zoom out with the ID tags and unit numbers on and you'll find them easily

zoom out with the ID tags and unit numbers on. White is already used to show where deep snow is

I can't believe I didn't think of snow. Especially considering my previous post here!:doh:

What about gold/bronze? It's different from yellow and it might be easier to see?

Re: One proposal

There is no gold/bronze

Re: One proposal

We are already discussing a possible 2 choice option for the mini map where you get the full range of height contours and most terrain ( with fields likely removed as they don't do much but distract ) and one that is a more bare bones option like Andy suggested where only the basic terrain is displayed along with units on a light coloured map so darker primary blues and reds would work for unit colours.....

Re: One proposal

As said easy way to find units is zoom out & switch ID tags on, saves a lot of time keeping your units cohesive as well due to all units of the formation being highlighted.
Mini map for me is just a fast way to centre the map on the area I want.

Which is really all it was ever intended for but in the days of 640x480 is showed larger than it does now. The other thing I would LIKE to do..... (which does NOT mean it WILL get done.....there are lots of things I would like to do that don't and never will)..... is this

Click on or mouse over the main map and get this
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attac...1&d=1490096318

mouse over or click on the mini map and get this
http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/attac...1&d=1490096301

so if you are using a full 200x160 map you see it all on the mini,so no scrolling required

in this hypothetical scenario, would it be possible to have the mini map in a small (as is now or similar) size and when you move your mouse over the mini map (or click) you get the expanded version?

What would be the point ? It interferes with nothing unless you are running one of the low resolutions and it would only apply to the CD version

It would be easier to glance over the mini map without having to move the mouse pointer there.

Re: One proposal

The mini map now and in the proposal covers the same area. Each pixel = on hex so if it reverted to the size it is now there is no guarantee it will be where you want to glance at it which would require scrolling it and the expanded size only partly covers 2 hexes and it would only get that big if you were using a 200x160 map

I only play the largest maps, but I get your point. It's better your way.
