Let's Play 1989 USSR vs NATO

I just started a "let's Play" of this game on my youtube channel.
I am going to play as the USSR "attacking" Germany/USA/UK in a 1989 generated campaign.
If anyone wants to have a look, feel free, the playlist is at

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...cBQLXERoYpmq5s

As I haven't played the game in some time now, I am very rusty. Don't expect a victory or good strategies. This is going to be more of a test to see if I can do a let's play of this game.
Commentary is going to suck even more.

If you have a problem with me posting such a link, please remove it.

If the link is removed, if anyone wants to check my channel search for it "trusteft"

Thank you.

Nice! I like the idea of a let's play for WinSPMBT. I'm eagerly waiting for the next episodes of your series. :D

Since you play as the USSR vs. NATO in 1989 I just want to remind you to not play the long shooting contest with NATO units, especially the ones that have thermal imaging. Instead, try to close the distance (using terrain, fixing units while yours maneuver etc) and fight them from close range (1000m or less). You have bought T80Us which are very good tanks for this strategy, good frontal armor and very mobile, plus they can easily kill any tank in the time frame at the range mentioned.

Anyway, good luck and like I said I will take a look at your series for sure!

Yeah, thank you. :)

Man, I just stopped recording the next episode. I was planning on finishing the whole battle in a couple of hours and have that uploaded tonight *EET. It took me over 5 hours and I am on turn 17 I think out of like 44 limit. Granted there are far fewer units right now than they were earlier, but wow I completely forgot how long the battles can last. Add to that you have to comment on what you are doing which slows everything down... I LOVE IT.

As to how this battle goes, let's just say the Americans apparently like their planes. A lot.
I will post here when the episode is actually up. Probably it will be some time tomorrow as 5 hours of video to render and upload what I assume is going to be a huge amount...I don't even know if it is going to break the YT limits on size. Last episode was 50 min and was almost 8GB...

45+ GB That's the largest file I have ever uploaded on youtube. If the upload speed doesn't drop, the video will be up some time in the next 10-14 hours....ouch.

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

About 14 hours in, 69% uploaded.
A couple of things.
1) I recorded the second part of the battle (the one I am uploading now is the first) and it will be about half the size, which is good. BUT I don't know if I should continue with this size of videos in the future of this let's play. I was planning on going for an episode per weekend, but if I have them much smaller then each battle will take weeks to finish. I don't want that. Decisions decisions!

2) The battle has finished, the last part will be uploaded probably during the weekend. It was a very interesting battle as I haven't played the game for a few years now. Going against the superior (TI and all) American forces was an interesting change from the past. I did make some mistakes, not too many, I lost a couple extra units from stupid unforgivable mistakes, but I plan on not repeating them in the future.

3)Those %$@#$ A-10 Warthogs!

I would suspect the Soviet Army in 1989 would have agreed wholeheartedly.

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

After 26 hours of uploading, the video is finally on youtube. As for this moment (just finished) it is only available at 360p, I don't know when youtube will "allow" the 1080p version. Hopefully not too long as at 360p is not exactly at its best.

Wdll January 24th, 2018 05:09 PM

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

I don't want to spam the thread, I just thought to mention that 1080p is available. I am not sure when exactly it became available, but I guess it took more than a couple of hours. Following episodes I might wait first before I publish the videos.
So far it is quite an experience.
This episode ( https://youtu.be/lcc7rzdGqyg ) was a 5 hour episode and I just don't think this is long enough. I am joking. I think I am going to make it a daily or semi daily series and have each episode last 30-60 min at most.

The next episode is already finished (under 3 hours long!) and I am going to upload it probably on Friday. It is the second and last part of the actual battle. Following that, from Monday, I will see how things go and release accordingly.
Now, about those A-10s!

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

I've seen up to turn 5, around 1 hour (yeah, the video is huge, I'll probably finish watching it on Saturday) and so far I see you're doing well, apart from the very aggressive use of the BTR platoons and their encounter with M3 Bradleys, which led to many losses among your APCs. The aircraft that attacked you did not do much, plus you shot down most of them, so I'm curious about that dreaded A10 strike.

Oh and emprosthofilaki=vanguard. :)

Very aggressive? They were lucky they weren't in BMP-1s I would have them charge those M1 :p

I remember in one MP battle where I charged and destroyed a Merkava with 5 Chaffees. :)

Haha, now that is something I'd love to see. :D

I did manage to kill T64s and T80s with Scimitars and CV40s in some games, but they are worth more than the Chaffees.

Next part is up. Deployment and first fights.
I did have a very nasty surprise though. For some reason I thought it was a vision 40+ battle. It isn't...

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I decided to go with much shorter videos. This is a tiny, barely over an hour and 23 min long, video.

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

The battle continues with losses on both sides. I think I have already lost more units so far than in the whole previous battle. OK, perhaps not that many, but still too many. Damn you smoke dischargers! At least no enemy planes yet.

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

Well watching this shows more than 1 way to play you use the unit roster much more than me. I tend to resolve the important stuff first while I remember then work across the map so use it far less.
Also do far less micro managing like switching weapons off when unload.
Comments are great especially when a risky shot comes off its entertaining.
Couple of things due to length of video.
1) Would spend a couple of minutes looking at the map to remember where you are at before starting the video.
2) AI turn pause the video go make a drink or something, start video & press replay turn to see what happened without all the waiting.

Thank you for watching and your post here.
I am glad you find some of my commentary entertaining. That's the whole point. :)

Now about your two points.
1) I should spend a bit more time doing that.

2) Where is the fun in that? Also, I do this live so I can't "pause the video". I don't record the battle and then provide commentary, it's all live.

:)

The next part is up.
Unfortunately there is no commentary after the first half an hour or so. For some reason I still don't know, it just stopped recording my voice after that part.
I uploaded the whole thing.

Re: Let's Play 1989 USSR vs USA

I want to apologize for the delay for the next part. I did record another episode but things happened over the last few weeks, including the death of my father, which kind of bummed me out of doing any work, even editing video games. Who knew!

I think I will manage to edit that older recording to upload sooner than later. I know I can as few days ago I did a whole different video on my channel, though it took far longer than it otherwise would.

Worry not, the let's play will go on even if it will be a bit slow for a bit more.

I didn't expect to have so much fun having this severe technology disadvantage.
