SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Since a lot of us appear to be in Ohio, who would be interested in hosting a mini-convention for us? How many people would be interested in attending? This sounds like it could be ultra-cool. It would give us all an opportunity to really work-up our gold edition!

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Lol. You are serious about this?
I could probably attend, but I'd have to tell my wife I am going golfing or something. She already thinks I am a hopeless Space Empires geek. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Geoschmo |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
I'd make it, don't know about hosting it tho, wouldn't have enough time to put it together, but I'd be there.....

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
I think it would be great, but really, let's have it someplace nice on the continental US.
Edit: Besides, I think geosmoe would have trouble selling his wife on going to Ohio to play golf. Maybe Pebble Beach? That must be close to SG. [ 07 March 2002: Message edited by: Gryphin ]
|

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Hey, you guys are going to have to drive, or move to this god forsaken place. It's bad enough we have to live here, but to make us drive somewhere else just seems WRONG. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Canterbury in Kent in England is very pleasant in Summer
Why is Geo selling his wife? is there much of a market in Ohio for 2nd hand wives? |

Actually Pebble Beach is about as far from SG as you can get without leaving the continental U.S. Although, it's about the only place I would go too besides Ohio for a SEIV Con. But I think it is close to Malfador. I live in Ohio. And no, I am not selling my wife. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Geo |

Hold the event in Portland OR. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Why don't you guys hold the Event in Toronto?
Your money is worth more there, It's a boat ride away to Ohio, And It's a real nice excuse to see Niagara Falls http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
We could always hold the first Canadian Space Empires Convention here in Toronto...
|
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Or visit sunny Florida. Send your wife and kids (if applicable) to Disney!

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
I honestly doubt an SE Convention could function, at least not on it's own. Maybe grouped with a Trek or general Sci-Fi Convention.
To do so, we would have to find a way to boost SE ten fold with books, toys, clothing, and more. Franchise the game! I'm talking to a friend up in Vancouver about an idea that could do so... Once I render the project possible on my time tables, I'm going to submit it to Malfador & Shrapnel for thier thoughts and hopefully a blessing. |

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Actually, running a big SEIV LAN game at a game convention (whatever's local) would probably work really well.

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
You Americans and Canadians are all far too insular - forget the continental united states, there is another world out there
Let's do the convention in Europe or even better, Thailand |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
This topic reminds me:
There is an annual LAN convention here in Michigan (actually there are a few of them at the universities) that I have to look up. I keep missing it every year and I want to go. If I do go to one of the LAN parties, maybe I could see about getting SE4 up and running; that would be something! And if there is a convention in Ohio, should it ever get organized, I'd go. Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Wherever we have it, there must be at least 1 bar close by, where we can let our hair down, relax and discuss the finer arts of SE4. If we keep it small at first, 1 or 2 days, we would have a better chance of realization of the SE4 con. We could have Aaron and Richard give talks on the game/s, MM establishment give talks, The different Modders could give sessions on Modding the different aspects of the game to teach us rookies how to mod step by step, etc. IF possible we could set up a number of computers where players could play against each other in hot seat games, etc. Growltigga could discuss how to sip suds at sit down cafe's and watch the bouncing sites without getting caught, Gryphin to explain
the ins and outs of symbiote relationship to small furry Wooly Bears with small ears and Custer hats, Tesco & Puke to give a class on the proper make up of Sauce cuisine and SJ on how nomads shall inhabit the universe http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif just some ideas mac |

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
10 people in a brew pub for dinner followed by a nice evening of lan playing sounds like a good night to me.

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Cool Idea! I would be there IF I can get out of work! I have been to some SF conventions their are some STRANGE people there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
There's always the thought of having a mini-con/gathering inside another SF convention. The next two big Ohio conventions would be MarCon (Columbus) and MilleniCon (Cincy). There may be other cons but they're not very large.
If the con or gathering happens, I'll do my best to be there. As if it were such a long drive from Ann Arbor to Ohio... though having it no further south than Columbus or Dayton would certainly improve my chances. Re: Bars. Hey, guys, some of the fans may not be over 21. Gotta watch out for that. Eric/LL |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Our younger players are welcomed, we'll just make sure that pepsi/coke is the order of the day....we'll let GT check their ID's.. and if they beat us in hot seat, well then, they are on their own.. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
PS. there used to be some good pubs/bars in Columbus at one time, don't know if they are still there, been awhile since I was there, just some ideas mac [ 08 March 2002: Message edited by: mac5732 ]
|
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Hrm. Scratch Millennicon; that's in two weeks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Though people in the area (it's at King's Island) may be interested in checking it out nonetheless. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hadrian Aventine
A convention would break even and probalby turn a small profit. The key is to start small and build it each year as you gain experiance. This worked for BattleGroupe Boston, (the miniatures wargame club I belonged to), and their convention "Havoc". SG and MM, and other SG game companines will profit indirectly from exposure. Cons are a lot of work. They can be very rewarding. They can also be a major financial risk if you guarantee a hotel X amount of rooms and they don't get filled. I have a lot more thoughts if anybody would like them. |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Ya know, even if we can't get an Ohio Con put together, it doesn't mean we all can't take a day, meet at a local establishment, drink some Bruskies, (pop for the younger ones) exchange war stories, and maybe even find a place to set up some hot seat games.. ah welll just an idea, maybe the con will still happen, hope so.. Hey, Richard lives in Lancaster, he could put us all up for the night, there must be someplace to go in Lancaster, they don't roll the sidewalks up at night do they http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Them war story sounds good mac.
We up north always have stories to say, and a war story we have. It involves many people going down the trenches, up the bunkers, always trying to take control of the high hill while facing off the Bears and the bulls. The name of that story my friend is: The canadian dollar http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
I wasn't trying to put a wet blanket, but adding a level of reality to it.
Planning is all nice and dandy, but there is a whole level of logistics and operations in it. Unless you want a small convention like the first trek one with 3 stars and 17 fans. Trust me, I'm working on a plan to put a zero behind that 3 and 17.... |
Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
Hadrian, I've been to a couple of Trekkie conventions with my oldest son, He is an avid Trekkie. There were always several hundred or more people at them. 1 had Spock (Lenoard N) and the other had Q (can't remember name off hand right now) they were all really interesting, in fact Q was really funny. N was not as friendly, more on the cool side

Re: SEIV Con. 1 -- OHIO
An amature convention would workif it was a few buddies getting together in one place.
The logistics would be tough because of the computer equipment. Not every one can buy a laptop, (including me). Like geoschmo said, It is a nice dream. If a few got together, then maybe it could be organized for a larger group the following February. Then? who knows? [ 09 March 2002: Message edited by: Gryphin ]
|
