20 years
Twenty years ago today, Dec 7 1998, SP2WW2 was released and never in my ( or Andy's..... or anybody else I am sure) wildest dreams did we think 20 years later we'd still be upgrading it.
That was when a Pentium II 400 and 512 MB 100mHz Ram was "high end":) Don |
Re: 20 years
Twenty years. I have some vague memories of those days.

Re: 20 years
I would like to thank both Don and Andy for their tremendous work on updating, enhancing, correcting, squashing bugs, countless OOB updates and continuing design and development and putting up with all the stuff they do for both SPWW2 and SPMBT.
In my mind you both deserve some kind of medal, or extremely large monetary award both of which I am unable to give. You both have hands done carried this ship and its a ship I am so very glad and grateful to be on. You both have inspired me to create and have given me a platform to design and develop some scenarios for this, no your great game. It may have started off as a side project but you two have turned both SPWW2 and SPMBT into what we have here, it truly is your bonafide SP CAMO SPWW2 SPMBT produced, developed, upgraded and maintained by Don Goodbrand and Andy Gailey. I don't have the words to properly thank you both, so I'll just honor you both with scenarios and next year some campaigns. Thank you Shrapnel for hosting and selling SPWW2 and SPMBT but more importantly thank you Don and Andy (you will always be SP Camo to me, lol) for everything! May God bless you both and give you long life. PS I can't believe I was in my thirties 20 years ago...just think of how great a game this is, I have been playing this (as have others) for over 20 years! Again all thanks to SP CAMO. |

We may drive you both mad at times but we love the game and the work you do - I sometimes only wish there was more we could do to reward you (guess I could buy the games again...) Cheers! |
Re: 20 years
Thanks for all of the good times. Much appreciated. Been playing since 2002.

Re: 20 years
That could be a gaming industry record when it comes to support, thanks for putting up with us it must get trying at times.
If anything the updates have become more varied in recent years as you come up with new ideas. To those of you still playing the free game why the bought version is superior even if it is the most derestricted demo ever you will love the extra features. If you have had it for more than 6 months support the guys that made it possible so they can keep supporting you. This game has survived many operating systems and is still one of the best tactical games on the market with a level of support which should shame the game industry. Name me another game where they read there webpage on a virtually daily basis, that's if they even listen to consumer input at all, we have had 20 years of it. |
Re: 20 years
Congratulations gentlemen.
It is a testimony to both the inherent quality of the game, and the loving care that you have showered upon it over these past two decades. SPww2 is the only game I have consistently played and enjoyed since I bought the original installation disk, version 1 way back in the DOS days. I was looking for a computer based solution to a lack of opponents to play Avalon Hill games. Sincere thanks, Gelainey |

Well done both of you and thanks for the effort. |
Re: 20 years
I agree with all the thanks expressed above! If you added a "donate" button, I would happily support your efforts, and I guess many others would too.

Re: 20 years
Yeah thanks for this game, I was playing instead of learning uninteresting courses. I lost time in school, not in games...
Pass your exams and be undead, instead of learning the very life. |
Re: 20 years
Well yes. Playing Steel Panthers reinforces the observation that life is a fight, and that we as individuals are responsible for whatever happens to us. If SP be the food of philosophical insight, play on, play on...

Re: 20 years
Congratulations, well done! I play Steel Panthers since 2008 and I consider it to be the best simulator of battalion to brigade level there is available on the market <3

Re: 20 years
Seems like yesterday.

Re: 20 years
Celebrated the 20 year anniversary by buying the CD version. Haven't played much in the past many years, but thought I'd give it a go again.
France vs Germany May 1940 and I have a sneaky FCM-36 with 5 kills vs German armour - this is really fun :) |

Re: 20 years
Well done Don and Andy, well done. Your visions, your ambitions, your motivations have changed many peoples lives over the years. Whether it was recruiting people to join SPCamo to aid in the creation of SPWW2 or SPMBT. Whether it was having this game be here for those in need of destroying boredom or needed an old friend to get them through a tough time. Whether it was arguing with the community members about ideas for future patches or one day releasing to the public all new repaints for Steel Panthers 2 for others to enjoy the fruits of your labor. We all in some way or another have gone on a journey over the lifespan of SPCamo and the great games it has expanded, nurtured, and watched over for the last 2 decades and turned into what has now become one of the great strategic warfare classics of all time. You can not find a person who enjoys or loves strategic warfare games and they have not at a minimum heard of or know Steel Panthers and its expansions. You did that. I tip my hat to you both. Well done gentlemen, well done.
PS, let's not forget all the little people that supported Don and Andy throughout the decades. That list is long and varied. I also, tip my hat to all of you as well. PSS, Lastly, without this community loving and supporting these games for as long as we all have, none of this would be possible. Thank you. |
Re: 20 years
One this I've always wanted to know is how much influence did Apple's (later early Microsoft DOS) Kampfgruppe series have on SP if any?

But I think the old boxed Avalon Hill game Panzerblitz was the main inspiration. But then, it provided inspiration for a lot of the hex-shuffling games hat came out of the US. I come from a UK tabletop gaming background, WRG and TTG rules etc, so my reaction on seeing the original SP1 was "looks like 1/300 done on the computer". |
Re: 20 years
Panzerblitz was more like SP3. SP1 and SP2 were more like Squad leader though not exactly equal comparison it is a bit closer to the mark
|
Re: 20 years
Squad Leader (ASL) and coffee, always brings a smile to my face...when I first saw SP1 I was like Oh my gosh...ASL in computer format...
The 20 years have been a blessing, always have an opponent with SPWW2/MBT and it's just Awesome! |

Re: 20 years
I am a bit ashamed because I only inherited the game. But I am very happy that you all love this game! It feels right. Like family and to be at home.
I still can not play properly :) but that does not matter. :) |
