* Campaign games – If your core force is extremely large, then the only way the AI will be able to have sufficient points is to be the delayer or defender. Therefore the human player will see more assault and advance missions in this case.

* Planes which crash off map should now show the entire points value for the aircraft, not the damage at the point it was shot down.

* Random games will generate fewer low visibility conditions than before.

* UnitClass Commandos now have the same parachute ability level as Paratroops so they suffer fewer casualties when landing.

* Aircraft will no longer strafe at extreme angles though they may still fire one or two hexes off the flight path.

* Maps will now save crater damage again.

* Ammo containers can be loaded onto trucks.

* Fewer objective flags will be auto placed on mud hexes in generated battles.

* There is now a slightly higher chance of flaming wrecks blocking LOS.

* The Replay key Y / N will no longer play UNLESS Y or N is pressed. Formerly any key other than N set off the replay.

* Airstrikes set for specific in and out points in scenarios should now " follow orders". The AI was sending them in at random directions as it would in a generated battle but they should behave as the scenario designer set them now.

* The formula for calculating aerial bomb ratings has been adjusted so the "little" ones are more effective and are not so much worthless wet firecrackers any longer. This was generally more of an issue in the time period covered by SPWW2 but there are some in SPMBT as well and the codes are in sync on this issue.

* A code quirk, some might call it a bug, that allowed players, particularly PBEM players, the ability to Z-Fire or X- Smoke into a hex with on map artillery then go to the bombardment menu and get a 0.1 delay for a full bombardment has been eliminated. It is no longer possible to do that and a side benefit for some players, but perhaps not to the players who loved to do " recon by Z-fire", is that it is no longer possible to Z-fire into a hex then repeat, repeat, repeat using the F key. Every Z fire now needs to be done individually because after a Z-fire the process is reset to zero after each Z-Fire so that hex cannot be used to circumvent the artillery bombardment routine delay.

* Vehicles will now show drop shadow on paved road. They didn't for years. Now they do.

* 83 scenarios that Don Lazov resurrected from old archives have been added and updated.

* A bug that has existed in the game back to before we started working on the code has been found and eliminated that affected paved road in particular when it was manually placed on a map but not when the map was auto-generated by the game. The bug, in slightly different forms, affected streams as well as hedgerows when placed on the map but then had sections removed and then added back in again, if the mapmaker did not place the terrain on either side of the gap then in some cases it would appear the terrain was there but the game recorded and treated that hex for sighting and movement as being whatever the underlying terrain was. This bug fix not only corrects that problem for any new maps made but also in pre-existing maps and scenarios where the problem was mostly confined to hand made maps that used paved road as before this release if a map maker placed a paved road in a 5 hex line there would be paved road showing in all five hexes but the last hex placed would show a road tile but it was not being recorded as a road and this means if a map maker added small sections of road to a map and each time started the next section after that last hex showing a road was being built with many breaks that could not be seen but anyone driving down that road you would not be getting the full road allowance as you would passing over sections of the underlying terrain even though it appeared to be a road. The bug did not cause a problem with secondary roads as secondary road code was slightly different, and still is, as it only placed a tile up to the last hex but not on it.

In the case of streams, it was placing a "ford" on the map every time you started a stream which isn't such a problem as the roads but it was unintended and in Hedgerows, it was not giving the proper density to the first hex in the line for sighting purposes. However, all these little problems, that were not so "little" to fix, have been eliminated so now WYSIWYG and all old maps and scenarios will be automatically purged of these issues when using this new EXE.

* CD owners Only- As the result of code changes to the way the game displays terrain graphics, there are now 8 game display levels. Three more than previous, each of those allow you to zoom in closer to units on the map. The base zoom level, the one you see when you first start up the game is Z4 and previous versions of the game also allowed you to zoom in 1.5X closer than Z4 using Z5 but the new zoom-ins allow 2X closer than Z4 using Z6 and 3X closer than Z4 using Z7 and 4x closer than Z4 using Z8. How this will look to each gamer depends on what size your monitor screen is and what resolution it uses so in some cases with older, smaller monitors the greater zoom-ins may not be as useful to you as they would someone with a large monitor that displays at very High resolutions.

* CD owners Only. You can now flood fill areas of zero elevation with deep water using the " key in both the in-game map editor and the extended map editor. This was primarily added to be a map making support tool for use with the Venhola map contours generator but it can be used for hand made maps as well. For shoreline maps it saves a great deal of time but be aware that sometimes beach areas are recorded by Venhola as the same level as the water so those areas and any areas of shallow water you may want troops to wade through will need to be added manually.

* CD owners Only. There is a new “find text” function in the Scenhack utility that allows players to search through all scenario description text files to find specific text references. Once the search is run this new feature will provide a list of the scenarios in order, that match the search inquiry. For example, perhaps Israel or Warsaw pact or WW3 is entered and all the scenario with that word or phrase used in the scenario description file will be listed, You can then click on the one that interests you and you will be taken to the "Scenario Fixer" tab and read the scenario description by clicking on the Scenario button. It can also be very handy for finding a scenario created by a specific designer. Simply enter the name and it will provide a list of any scenario that has that designers name on it. As well, scenhack now allows SQL's database queries to be saved and loaded from a new folder placed in the game named 'SQL". The usage of these functions is explained on the CD features /Scenhack section at the end of the game guide.

* CD owners Only- There is now a Delete button for the scenarios page like the one for saved games.

* CD owners Only- There is now a GoTo button in the Campaign Editor scenario links page.

* CD owners Only- Pressing <SHIFT+3> ( the # HotKey ) during your turn will turn your bombardment markers on and off so you can see where they are and if you are advancing into your own barrage. It will also show which guns are targeting the hex .

* CD owners Only- Pressing [ HotKey on your keyboard will show the victory hex values under the V hexes.

This example shows both the Victory Hex values ( [ ) on, and the bombardment markers with guns targeted (#)CD features

* CD owners Only- Pressing ] HotKey on your keyboard will force V hexes to the top of all building rubble , as well as smoke and units , so they cannot be hidden in any way. Just remember when this is on it may hide units as well so it is intended for temporary use only.

* CD owners Only- Scenhacks "Nation" button will no longer switch the entire OOB from one nation to another only the ID tags now.

* CD owners Only- Scenhack now shows the Scenario number and they are no longer being added to the CMT file.

* CD owners Only- Setting visibility can now be done in 10's or ones. Low visibility games 7 and under show a red number, 8- 20 will show yellow numbers and anything greater than 20 shows in green. You will see two rows of up/down arrows. The inner set changes by one and the outer set changes by 10's.

* CD owners Only. There is a new "Units In Hex" feature for the Full CD game that allows you to select the unit you want easily when you have multiple units in a hex.

If for example you have four units in a hex and you own the CD version you will see this to the right of the screen

The top unit shown is the one you clicked on and is the "active" unit that you can move or fire or whatever you want to do but let us assume you want to use the observer team to call artillery, Click on that unit and the list will re-order and change.

Now the Observer team is the unit you have direct control over in that hex and if you wanted to select one of the rifle sections just pick the one you want and it will appear at the top of the list and that is the one you have control of.

PLEASE REMEMBER. SECURE PBEM GAMES WILL FAIL IF THIS UPGRADE IS EXTRACTED WHILE A GAME IS ONGOING.

Re: winSPMBT V13 ( 2019 ) Upgrade-WIP

The release of these upgrades to winSPWW2 and winSPMBT marks 21 years we have been producing the games (1998 - 2019).

Normally as we do our final preparations for release we have already discussed in part what we will do for the next years release. However, this year is a bit different as these two upgrades are not only large but have also been unusually stressful to assemble and both Andy and I have agreed that we need a break from this and therefore have no plans for next year beyond perhaps getting through a winter where virtually all our spare time is NOT spent getting game patches ready. After 21 years it will be a hugely refreshing change that we are both looking forward to as we are both burnt out and in serious need of a break from what has been over two decades of never-ending game development. Therefore, there are no plans to release a 2020 upgrade. Once we have had some time away from development and the stress caused by it, we may, or not, consider to continue development but if we do it will be on a much more limited basis focusing on code and existing game improvements and FAR LESS on OOB changes.

OOB work on winSPWW2 is frozen. Over 20% of the existing scenarios in winSPWW2 had to be rebuilt this year in one way or another to keep in sync with the OOB changes made this release and as they stand now is the way they will continue to be in the foreseeable future. We are not going to continue to re-work and re-issue scenarios and campaigns for OOB changes that have very little real effect on the way the game plays. Far too much of the time we have available to actually develop the game is spent on OOB change drudgery and the spin-off impact of those changes and it makes it all the more tedious knowing that all that work will have next to zero impact on how the game actually plays. Some may disagree and that is to be expected but all the tools to edit the OOB's have been included with the game with every release so anyone who wants to can adjust the OOB's to suit what they consider "correct". OOB work on MBT may continue but I will not be constantly re-adjusting in service dates for tanks that are constantly under development but never seem to reach troops. When one actually enters service we are interested but the latest delay in their production we do not care about at all. We have found with MBT trying to stay on the cutting edge of equipment only means a lot of rewriting of OOB's over and over.

The bottom line is that game development has not entirely ceased but it will be greatly scaled back after these updates and there are no plans at this time to release in 2020. Since 1998 we have released at least one upgrade for at least one game every year and in some years there were 2 updates a year for both of the two games but there were also 2 open heart surgeries, Andy in 2010 and myself in 2015 then a month later I had a stroke, but through all that, updates for these games were produced. There have been increasingly very long stretches in front of the computer and more than a few sleepless nights that can greatly disrupt normal day to day life. As well this year we had to contend with a full HDD failure of Andy's main computer. We were fortunate we had backups but it still meant two weeks of code work had to be redone and as the computer failed just before Christmas we lost an additional 10 days waiting to find out what was wrong so both Andy and I feel we are entitled to a bit of a break from all this and we fully intend to take one.

Don and Andy, thank you so much for all the hard work, effort, and stress you two have put up with and have done for SPWW2 and SPMBT!

You both are indeed deserving a well earned rest and respite, thank you for putting up with all our crap all these years.

Bless you both and rest/recover well!

THANK YOU!

Thanks to you both for all your hard work over 2 decades - although it may not always seem it, we all really appreciate all you to to keep this game moving forward!

Have a VERY well deserved break, and if and when the mojo returns to make the changes and improvements YOU desire we will be here to lap it up.

I've mentioned this on the WW2 forum but I will here as well.

There may be a delay releasing both patches as a very serious issue has been discovered in the code added to try "level up" the AI's force when it hit the units/points limits and it was set to advance or assault but that unfortunately also effects low point / low unit count games as well giving the AI in some extreme cases troops with the maximum experience level on low point/ low unit count battles.

How long the delay might be or even if this will cause a delay has yet to be determined

Don

As do I but to give this in metaphor we are at the end of a long hard road this year and now we have a 15 foot wide chasm to cross and we are both hobbling from the stress of the journey........maybe too dramatic but it's been a hard day and there is no resolution in sight ATM.

The "good" news is it has no effect on a human bought game so PBEM are not in any way affected and if you play solo games but get other players to purchase the P2's units and allow him to deploy for you it will not affect you and if you play even a small 1000 point game against the AI using peer nations and the AI buys for P2 you won't see much out of the ordinary but if you fight USMC vs ISIL in modern day they end up about equal but should not be but lets say you turn country training off and give the USMC 80 and ISIL 40....... you're going to be really surprised when the 95-120 experienced Jihadis cranked on steroids and Methamphetamine swamp your positions.I have seen Russians from June 1941 get 140 experience points when they were set to give 30 turning them into something that would give you more " game" than you probably want.

So yeah ...... we have a problem and it might be simple to fix or not but it is confined to the computer purchasing routine but not in any way I can find to human purchases. I assume this extends to generated computer campaign games as well but there is no way to check.

The reason it took this long to spot.....because I am sure some of you are thinking that..... was that the code was added to deal with the extream conditions that can crop up when the human player had a high unit and point force and the AI is tasked to assault it......and in cases like that it does what it was intended to do..... buy better units and if that isn't enough adjust troop experience upwards..... it was not tested on little games because we thought those were too low in points and units for this change to have any effect...... HA! we were wrong

Just a question, why would the levels have to be adjusted higher instead of stay the same? I guess what I'm trying to say is that if a battle is fought in 1973 and the Egyptians are assaulting or advancing on an Israeli force (which has higher experience and morale ratings) why would the Egyptian force if under the conditions you outlined as far as units and points are concerned need to suddenly get higher ratings as well? It seems to me that it doesn't work that way in real life. That's kind of a "hulk-mode engaged" type of moment right?

Levelling is only there for the situation where player 1 has spent a lot on points and player 2 (the AI) has bought its troops, but still has points left to spend.

The human player may buy a zillion tiger 2 say, and the AI then does its buy with infantry units etc and hits its limit of 500 elements, with points in the kitty still.

The levelling code then runs through incrementing troop quality (experience and morale) until the outstanding points are used up, the experience levels are maximised, or the loop has been through 50 times.

So levelled up AI is only really for the sort of player who buys 500 MBT and expects the AI to match that. The AI buys a standard buy, not a fleet of MBT (even on tank heavy!).

(If I redid these games from the ground up then I would probably have another 500 slots free, that the human never would be allowed to have but the AI (or a scenario designer)could.)

It looks like that level-up feature won't be making it into the release as testing brought up some oddities.

Sounds like a rather complex piece of code to test.

If you need some testers to help I'm certain a few of us wouldn't mind installing a second WinSPMBT variant and doing some of the grunt work on variations and recording what we come up with.

DRG March 23rd, 2019 09:33 PM

Re: winSPMBT V13 ( 2019 ) Upgrade

We are done testing.

Changes made were showing some progress and seemed to be working well but it was totally screwing up low point games where a player might deliberately set the P2 AI player using Country training OFF for low experience and it was turning them into Rambos on steroids and meth and we are, to be honest, too way past the point of being interested in endlessly tinkering with this trying to get a marginal item working so it is being pulled from the list of changes.

It did, however, show some improvement with some tweaking in how it handled normal games against the AI and was no longer "levelling up" low point -low unit games as it had been. As I said earlier we had initially tested it for what it was supposed to help with and it did....but it was seriously making a mess of lower point games levelling up the experience points in battles outside of the battle types we had hoped it would help balance things a bit more in some cases 20 points higher than the same nation under the same battle conditions as P1 so you could have two nations evenly matched normally but the one as P2 would be getting an experience boost that was not intended to happen on low point games

Love the way you guys added the bombardment targets and which guns are firing to the screen. Also like the new ability to select a particular unit when multiple units are in the same hex, looks to be a very useful additions.

As for taking a break, you could have stopped developing this game 10 years ago and I would still be playing it. Nothing else like it and I have more than got my money's worth! And now that OOBs will finally be locked, I can begin work on my magnum opus Red Storm Rising campaign :D

The bombardment markers are great if you are trying to get your troops right behind a rolling barrage and keeps you from advancing too far too fast so it is a "finesse" tool that you would use with Blast radius on and those two together, along with the advantage of having a FOO with eyes on the target area shows the advantage of smaller calibre guns used for the final assault as the lethal radius to your own troops is smaller allowing you to get in closer.

The units in hex feature is handy on a crowded map allowing you to pick exactly the one you want but it is only on the main screen not the load units screen....but who knows maybe someday it will.

Have a great break you guys deserve it and hey if we are lucky you might come up with some more great ideas during your downtime.
If not and you decide to call it a day good luck to both of you that’s a great couple of features as a parting gift.
Using all the different features you have added over the years to the paid version makes your overview and keeping track of what’s going on a breeze compared to the demo.
Your ideas and dedication have turned this into a very polished game, the paid version is an entirely different animal to the demo I picked up years back.
This is now very much your game and so much better because of it.

First post to say "Thank you, thank you, thank you!". So many new features that, past the new zoom levels, I'm not sure which I appreciate most. My ancient eyes do revere the extra zoom capability.

I just found this game over the last few months. I had one of the earliest iterations of WW II, so long ago that I don't remember which. I'd been searching for a decent hex-based, modern game when I finally stumbled across this. MBT and SPWW2 have replaced Tiller's CS as my go to games. Now, if I could just learn its intricacies as well as CS.

Thanks again for what you guys have done with this game. Enjoy your break.

PLEASE NOTE

As of 8:26 EDT April 2 2019 the winSPMBT V10-V13 consolidation patch installer was replaced with a new one.

It fixes two problems we did not want to leave as they were as we do not know when we will, or even if we will make further upgrades to the game.

  1. It fixes a problem with the Extended editor that did not show the red hex outline for the selected hex in Zoom levels >5
  2. It corrects a bad Shp file for an icon that was used by 25 units in 14 different OOB's

There are No other changes so if you have started a PBEM with this new patch installing this replacement will have no effect and if you don't ever expect to build custom maps or play a game that flies a P-47 you won't have to bother Downloading this new version but if you have downloaded and installed the new upgrade before 8:36 EDT April 2, 2019, then downloading it again will give you those corrections.

I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.

I wish this had not happened but it did and we fixed it but it will mean some of you will have to DL and re-install the patch again and I regret that but it is what it is. Things like this are a side effect of issuing two patches to keep two games in sync that combined involved 2,888 files

The new one can be distinguished from the old one by an _ ( underscore ) between Consolidation and Patch

First release----- winSPMBT Ver10-Ver13 Consolidation Patch(2019)
New version-----winSPMBT Ver10-Ver13 Consolidation_Patch(2019)

Anyone who downloaded the patch after 8:26 PM EDT April 2 2019 can ignore this message as you have the most up-to date version and this has NOTHING to do with winSPWW2 --only winSPMBT

Well..... mentioning it sometime in the previous 15 years--maybe when you first noticed it-- would have been helpful as they have been like that since at least 2005 and probably since the first version was released in 2002. So you are the first since then to say "hey.. the crews are too big and the bombloads are way too small"

.....apparently delivering Cluster bombs was this things raison d'être when it wasn't tasked nuclear https://fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-111.htm

things like this get overlooked because I usually had more than enough to do dealing with reported problems without having to go looking for them and APPARENTLY nobody really uses F-111's much but with the full bombload that could change especially the full CB bombload

There is a thread started by Suhiir on the To&E thread titled "WinSPMBT v13 Corrections".... that would be a good place to start but I also have this entered into my " If I lose my mind one more time" list

Re: winSPMBT V13 ( 2019 ) Upgrade

Some of the frustration that Don has to deal (And myself in researching equipment prior to Don seeing it.) with in OOB work is when you're looking "forward" towards new, modernized equipment or a country buys equipment you'll sometimes find that these could lead you down an unintended path, and it can get ugly real fast. This year was certainly an ugly year.

A simple date change for the ABRAMS SEP V3 lead to if Don, took all my recommendations on the matter, to 2 Deletions and at least 8 other modifications. A "no brainer" simple submission for Brazil to get the M107A5/A5+ lead a total rework of all the M107 Series SPA units. The consequences for me was research/submit/correspond and reach an understanding in the direction we'll take. I'm done. Don will second check me as he should, modify as necessary once he decides to move forward on the submission(s) and when he runs into something as noted above, has to change the OOB, Scenarios and Campaigns said piece of equipment is in.

We have so many OOB's and equipment within them, issues like you presented and mine (And from other folks over the years.) will "pop up" it's unavoidable, unfortunate, very time consuming and for me personally, a step backwards.

Many know how I work and present my submissions, it is exacting and precise as my job required in the USN and as it does now in my current line of work.

The frustration with OOB work is like the examples above was due to "shoddy work" and lack of "due diligence" that went back before Andy and Don took this game on. This was an "ugly" year in that regard.

I hate stepping backwards, but we got them fixed and the game and players will be better for it, though at the time it might not feel like that.

I've read the notes and am very impressed with the outcome of this Patch. It was good to see a couple of former items added back from the past I liked, the artillery stuff and I REALLY liked the stacking info format. And anything to help or make the AI better is always a plus for me.

Andy and Don my hat's off too the both of you and to those that've over the years consistently contributed to the game in the "front of the house" and "behind the scenes".

Don my thanks to you for your support over these years I've enjoyed the teamwork aspect we've developed and am so grateful to you that you allowed so much of my work into this wonderful game.

You both needed the break a few years back and I fully understand the need for one now even if it should lead to retirement from the game. As some know already know we learned a hard lesson in "life is to short" and we (CINCLANTHOME & I) choose to live it.

I hope you both do so as well.

For the rest of you "mugs" I announced my retirement from this game already, so barring any unforeseen events, I hope to be around to maybe tell you "I told you so!?!" on some stuff I've been tracking for years now.

Suhiir thread as Don noted, is an excellent place to address those OOB issues from this last Patch it'll keep things compact.

Andy & Don we (Again my better half.) wish you both well and I leave with a fine Naval traditional farewell "Gods Speed and Fair Winds and Following Seas" to the both of you.

For all to remember...

"In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing." - Theodore Roosevelt

I've got things to do in the morning before work so good whatever, wherever you are!!

Regards,
Pat

Re: winSPMBT V13 ( 2019 ) Upgrade

First of all I want to express my admiration towards you for sticking with it, this great game. I have no doubt if there were no updates, fixes and OOBs, this game would be played by far fewer people.
Thank you and I wish you the best, if you come back (updating etc) or not.

I haven't played the game for many months now so my memory is a bit off.
I will ask two questions.

1. Regarding the info shown above in the op,
Quote:

* Campaign games – If your core force is extremely large, then the only way the AI will be able to have sufficient points is to be the delayer or defender. Therefore the human player will see more assault and advance missions in this case.
Is the extremely large a set number, percentage or other? I am asking as I usually play with prestige points (for post 2000 random campaigns) of 20-25K if not more, and perhaps half that in the 1980s.

2) Some time ago I asked about possible changes to the way the bombardment ordering screen looks. I mentioned the "traffic lights", and there were other good suggestions there. Because my mind is for some time now in a whole lot of mess and I don't remember even what year I posted that, I was wondering and if anyone remembers if something was done to that screen.
If I asked about this recently or if I was already explained something else about this, please ignore. It's just hard for me to think/remember properly, hopefully that will change over this Summer.

Point 1 - The large number is related to your core points value. if your core is too large for the AI to reasonably buy an attacking or assaulting force, you will be offered mainly advances, assaults etc. - The larger your core, the more likely your remaining battles will be attacks on the AI.

your point 2 - I have no idea.

Re: winSPMBT V13 ( 2019 ) Upgrade

Since I upgraded to v13 the extended map editor freezes totally in Ubuntu Linux 18.04. The in-game map editor seems to start just fine, but extended map editor just stays black, cpu fan starts and the system is totally jammed, not even mouse cursor is moving. If I kill the process from another session then the GUI recovers.

Has anyone else experienced this or is it something strange that exists only within my system?

I tried updating wine to latest stable version, nuked the configurations etc but only thing that seemed to have any effect was to run it full screen. Well, at least there's still hope.

The size of your video card's video memory may have been incorrectly determined by Wine. If this is the case, the executed mapedit behaves as if there were not enough video memory.

If you know the actual size, you can open the Wine registry editor with regedit. The video memory size is specified in the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Wine / Direct3D". Klick with the right mouse button on the entry "VideoMemorySize" and enter the new video memory size in megabytes. The editor must then be closed to accept the new settings.

For this to work, you must first know the actual size of the video memory in megabytes, of course. If you are not sure, you can determine it using the following command:

lspci -v -s `lspci | grep VGA | awk {'print $1'}` | egrep -o ", prefetchable\) [size=[[:digit:]]+" | egrep -o [[:digit:]]+

In addition, if a 32 or 64-bit version is running, are the entries for the working directory present and correct? [Maybe create a 32 bit wineprefix on a 64 bit system.]

From now on, the head is smoking or not? :o

I myself am not an expert either, even if that may look so, because of my post. I just had constant difficulties too with a windows program and could not ask anyone. If all this is too complicated, you could use "VirtualBox" from Oracle. Another alternative would be "VMware Workstation Player". Both are free, both work well.

Distributions of Linux where SPWW2 and SPMBT ran smoothly throughout Wine immediately, were at least for me:

Manjaro Linux [with the window manager KDE Plasma and also Xfce]

ROSA Desktop Fresh R11 [with the window managers Plasma 5 64-bit, LXQt 64-bit, XFCe 64-bit]

But that does not mean that Wine can not run well with 18.04. Just that I assume that not the program to be executed is a problem, but that Emulator Wine does not handle it for some reason, or in conjunction with the window manager of Ubuntu, or whatnot ...

Therefore, I believe that it makes more sense, if your problems persist, that you talk to the Wine Responsibles and understandably describe your concerns with Wine. Also describe them your hardware in detail. Will be good!
