Skinning SE4
I was looking at the pictures dir one day and found the files that SE4 uses to display SE4 buttons, icons, animations, and just about everything else. The files (.bmp) could be changed to create different skins. Although I admit thet SE4 cant look much better than it does now (atleast with it's current engine) this would be cool to do.

It CAN look better actually. Trekkies can switch it so it resembles Lcars buttons and Star wars junkies can switch it so it resembles Jedi symbols... Although significant back ups will have to be made or think about installing the game over and over again. |

I really don't know frankly, I guess I can make one using Photoshop...
But until i get gold i really can't do any tests. |

Once upon a time, I messed around with the "skin" bitmaps, and changed the blues to reds. It looked cool, but unfortunately, some things are hard-coded to be blue (or I couldn't find a bitmap for them).
It would be really cool if Aaron would allow the SEIV skin to be translated to a bunch of XML files, so there can be user-moded skins to go with user-moded tech and user-moded AI... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

one of the guys I play pbem with has created a few skins for the game... Perhaps I can get him to post them here..

well... I've just made a real basic skin for the Tabs, on photoshop.
If anyone wants to see it, I'd be glad to post it here once I figure it out. |

Skins supported by the game are very limited.
Only things that you can change are very few bitmaps most of them graphical buttons. The layout of the main screen and windows will always be black with blue borders, all you can change are corner bitmaps. Background will always be plain black, and fonts will always be blue and white. I've been working on a new skin for se4 in the Second UM. sadly, I'm fustrated as hell about the things I can't change.
