AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
Is there any way to prod the AI to use mines defensively around a planet? Anytime I make them, they just apparently sit in planetary cargo warehouses until a minelayer takes them away.
Is this something that requires an enemy to attack, and then they will be launched? |
Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
I have run into the AI using mines at WP but not around planets, I have attacted some and they have mines as cargo and they did not release them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif this was in both 1.49 and Gold

I think you misunderstood me. I'm talking about the AI here. Specifically, can you make the AI use the very effective tactic of defending is planets with mines? I've only seen it defend warp points with these things and can't figure out how to make them defend planets with them. Is there a way to make it do this? |

Oops, sorry emperor's child, I reread your post and yes, you were quite right and I got the wrong end of the stick
How do you north americans say it? Doh!!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif |

Doh!!!!

Around here, Partnuh, we say "Doop!" (ala the Simpsons, a mind-numbing show you hopefully have been spared on that side of the pond...) Thanks Tampa Gamer... Sigh... Back to the drawing board for my poor Slaanesh AI defenses. |

In Gold the AI still just keeps sending ships into a known minefield. Thanks. Elmo [ 12 March 2002: Message edited by: Elmo ] [ 12 March 2002: Message edited by: Elmo ]
|
Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
Elmo - which AI's are sending ships into minefields? There is a line in the AI_Settings file: Ships don't move through minefields - if it is set to "True" they should not be sending the ships in (at least I thought that it was working).

I looked up the line in the AI_Settings file and it is "false". I guess they're intended to be dumb. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |

Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
I've seen mines in orbit around planets during games of 1.49, actually I had a tough time finishing one game because I had left the mines and sats an AI had put on a world, since I had finished off the planet I didn't worry about clearing the field. Little did I realize it kept the race slot alive until destroyed!

Well... I'm one of those kooky types that think there is very little worth watching on TV... News and Sci Fi are about the only thing I'll watch. Most of my free time (what little I can wheedle away from my parenting duties) I put into hobbies, church and cultural events. Val: Regarding AI's mining planets, I don't recall them ever doing this in ANY game I've played. Do you recall what AI race did this, and under what circumstances? I remember one game long ago that I had a mine layer attacked by the AI, and in the tactical auto combat mode my ship kinda pooped out a mine every few turns as it retreated. Maybe this is how those mines got there if you attacked a planet with a loaded minelayer in orbit. IIRC this was regarded as a bug and was fixed... Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
I don't recall which race, it was a standard 1.4# game (don't recall what patch). The race's colors were a pinkish flag - I'll see if I have a save at home. It was definately mines around their home planet - that much I am certain of since I could not figure out why the game had ended and I couldn't find any more enemies! Thought there might be a cloaked ship in a nebula so I started clearing nebulas!!!

RE: Telivsion I agree. I have not owned a TV in over 3 years. |

Couldn't find my old saves http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif I'll check some of my system backup CDs when I get a chance.

Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
I'm playing a game right now, and the Amon'krie are sending ships into my minefield...one at a time. They seem to be doing one test ship, then one minesweeper, then another test ship, repeat. And once when I dropped the ball and let them clear out all the mines, a full attack fleet of 13 ships came in on the next turn. Very crafty tactics, actually.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how good the AI has gotten in the Gold Version. SEIV is now a challenging game. |
Re: AI, Defend Thyself (mine question)
Just FYI, Homer's famous exclamation is officially spelled "d'oh!", according to The Oxford English Dictionary.
