2023 winSPMBT V17 upgrade/Patch info
 

OK, we are now totally back to normal. Both game's 2022 consolidator upgrade patches are back on each of Shrapnel's DL pages so anyone who has skipped a year or two updating now can do that before installing the 2023 patch.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS ANYONE WHO HAS ALREADY DOWNLOADED THE 2023 PATCH DOES NOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN unless in the case of MBT they Downloaded it before mid-afternoon May 1. If you did please go to the link below and download the "B" version that has the updated USMC picklists. If you downloaded that patch after mid afternoon on May 1 you will be OK just check the "picklists" folder of the game. If you see files dated 2023 you are OK, if the latest ones are 2022 you need to DL and install them again

So......

The patches posted May 1/2023 for both games ARE ONLY THIS YEARS WORK..... They are not consolidators that update a number of versions

If you have been updating the game every year this will not affect you and you will be up-to date but if you have not updated the game for a couple of years you will need to install the 2022 consolidator patch before installing the 2023 patch

* Observers with GPS are only charged 2-time units to shift out of LOS fires, not 3-time units

Here are new special hotkeys that allow adjustments while the AI turn is active

* The plus '+' and minus '-' keys will zoom the map in and out
* The '[' key turns Fast arty ON
* The ']' key turns Fast arty OFF
* The 'u' key toggles smoke on and off
* The 'i' key toggles ID tags on and off
* The 's' key toggles game sounds on and off
* The 'p' key brings up the preference screen

It sometimes takes a second or 2 to register while the AI finishes whatever action it is currently engaged in. So, you now can, for example, turn on or off fast arty to either speed up a bombarment or slow it down for closer observation while the AI turn is in progress.

* All Nations can now lay mines again but Nations that signed the Ottawa Treaty will only generate Anti-vehicle mines

* Unit class 125 is now "Drone" and is a separate clone of light helicopter to separate RPAS type drones from helicopter formations.

* Size 0 Drones cannot be targeted by SAMS with warhead > 8

* There was a bug that popped up when a map was made that used both a city grid and lakes that allowed troops to be place in what seemed to be buildings on solid ground but were not and this drowned the units on the next turn. This appears to be corrected now

ADDED April 23/2023

• It is now possible to once again let the AI play the AI and the game will not pause at the end of both turns every time allowing continuous AI vs AI play

• You can now use a two-word search string in Scenhack search. The only restriction is there must only be a single space between the two words.

Players wishing to switch from one to the other can find a folder named Mine Alternate located in the Graphics folder and contains a "Mine warning sign icons" subfolder and an "Original Mine Icons" subfolder. There are simple instructions on how to COPY ( do not MOVE ) one or the other into your game. Copying the files allows you to change from one to the other easily. This will have NO EFFECT on PBEM games

PLEASE NOTE: For winSPMBT the new alternative Mine symbols will show up as the default set. For winSPWW2 the originals will show up as the default set

I use Firefox - it shows a red dot and moans, but if you then click on the red dot and answer the nanny question and allow the download, it works as it should.

No idea what other browsers do with "suspicious" downloads but there should be a way to get rid of the nanny, somehow.

I use chrome and the link in DRG's post just blinks when I click it, nothing else happens.

If I right click and select open in new tab, the tab just disappears.

If I right click and select open link in new window and new browser window appears but is black with the URL in the URL box.

If I strip out this: "winSPMBT%20Ver17_Update(2023).zip" then I get a web page (old fashioned looking) where I can see all the download zips since 2013.

So that link makes it a bit confusing for folks.

You might need to just post a link to the games page instead ?

Microsoft Edge really hates it! But you can persevere and tell it you really do want the file. And again when you run the file. The buttons that allow you to keep and rub the file are often hidden behind the three dots or "more info" label.

On Chrome the main pages don't work either, you are redirected to a page that says your download will begin in 8 seconds, 30 seconds later no change, if you click on the link: If your download doesn't start automatically click here. Nothing happens.

That was my experience with Edge as well. Of the three I have.... Chrome, Firefox and Edge it was Edge that took the longest to convince that yes.... I really do want this but when I did it started DLing right away..... this is why I avoid using Edge

That said , IDK why this time this is such a PITA for everyone. The procedure I used posting they are available was the same basically as every other year

Did you try right-clicking the "click here" on the line......"If your download doesn't start automatically click here." and use the "copy link address" option and paste it into a new tab of your browser?

I know this is a PITA ( TRUST ME!) and I know it should work just clicking on it but there are so many browsers and so many different "security" background programs that it seems NOTHING is "simple" any longer

The patches posted yesterday for both games ARE ONLY THIS YEARS WORK..... they are not consolidators that update over a number of versions they are just this years work. The 2022 consolidation patch has been reposted on the Shrapnel download page for anyone who may have skipped a year or two

The "good news" is Shrapnel made some changes and for me anyway the DL starts within 8 seconds on its own without having to jump through the other hoops.

There was an entire file folder missing with all the new USMC picklists

ANYONE who downloaded a copy of the MBT update patch May 1 2023 should, to be safe, Download it again

The new upgrade/patch zip is named winSPMBT Ver17_Update(2023)-B.ZIP


The reason for this is I managed to miss putting in all the new USMC picklists in the picklist folder in the V17 update folder and this new "B" version has that error corrected.

I apologize to everyone for this but sometimes when you do something over and over and over sometimes no matter how many checks we make we miss something.

The "tell" if you Downloaded the blooper version is just before a normal install started YOU WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN THIS MESSAGE

My Firefox browser on Win11 downloaded this quickly w/o any issues. Fastest of all patch updates ever. I just downloaded at 5:45pm Eastern USA time so it's the B version patch....right?

B is correct and the changes Shrapnel made to the DL around mid day eliminated all of the issues reported early in the day. It works better for me now that it had for quite awhile

I maintain plausible deniability for the following, let's just assume a certain unidentified retired naval submariner might possibly have twisted Dons arm to play a joke on you to see how fast you'd "spin up" at that news on your picklist. It's a theory only (??) which I cannot at this time prove or unproved given the current data I have.

However, I will do my best to find out by using my refs to see if this is possibly related to a disinformation campaign. We might or may not uncover the truth in our lifetime, however I do take comfort in that the "The Truth Is Out There" ;) :eek: :angel

To both game downloads NO PROBLEMS

Browser: Win EDGE latest version. I've never had issues with this browser in the past but recognize Patch A had an "error".

Processor: AMD Quad Core.

Ram: Kingston Hyper X FURY 32 GB Auto/Manual Overclocking

Security: Primary: Bitdefender Total Security/

Secondary: Win Defender in the background. NOTE: This is where I had to take a couple of seconds to remember what to do as this ONLY happens here when downloading the games patches.

As you're going through the "are you sure you want to download this" process, on the second dialog box it will appear in the lower right that you can ONLY click on go back.

Don't!!!! Underneath the message at the top click below that on the left side which will open a box on the lower left side to allow you to continue with the download.

Download after file is opened: WinSPMBT: <8s.

WinSPWWII: I couldn't count that fast @ One 1-thousand-bit rate something just <2s.

What's left is to bounce the release against my submissions (Something that Don knows I do every year I have something submitted and look at my Non-USN Brazilian new "A-4" pictures.) and update my ORNX Ukrainian Russian capture numbers since submission.

GREAT JOB Andy and Don!!!!

And as always, the players that give us the strength to continue and the ones also that contribute to the other areas of the game.!!!!

On the subject of the 2023 update.

I'm fully aware almost no one ever plays vs an AI controlled USMC.
But for a change of pace you might try it sometime.
Unit/formation wise there's nothing else like it in WinSPMBT so it'll require you to do some things and react in ways you've never had to before.

I suggest in your "Preferences" you set "Air Sorties" to 4-6 for the USMC to get the full experience.

I had downloaded the original version, so had to re-download. The re-download on Edge went much easier than the first time! BUT for some reason I had to delete the original download in order to get the B download. Otherwise, I just got the original download. It's as if Edge decided I already had it??

Its likely that - X is there already so we blithely assume job done, rather than do the usual browser thing of downloading X again and appending a label like X (1) to differentiate it from the original download.

Which is a silly way to do things - but then again Edge is by microsoft so that is normal for microsoft.

The only problem with that theory is the DL for "B" was deliberately named with B added so it would be different than the original AND the file size was different with those missing files added so it was a different size and a different name

That said have Edge on my HD but don't like it and use Chrome and Chrome happily downloaded multiple copies of both installers yesterday that I made when people were saying the DL didn't work.. it just automagically adds a 1, 2 , or 3 etc onto the end so you could DL 99 of them and the last one would be ...
winSPMBT Ver17_Update(2023) (99).ZIP.

There might be something in your settings that is doing that but what I know about Edge is that it exists and nothing about setting it up

Also, in case anyone wondered this little brain fart of mine will not have any impact on PBEM.The OOB's were not changed so it's not imperative if you do PBEM that you and your opponent have the "B" version.

The ONLY effect the original would have on a player is if they used USMC as the opponent in a human/AI game or let the computer buy for them playing as USMC ( which would actually be a way to get the most out of the work that went into those picklists ) and even then, depending on the year, a player might not notice anything really weird like the AI buying a fleet of bulldozers in defence.

So......... I COULD HAVE just let this slide until we started getting reports which could have been months... that's the unknown but my first reaction was to fix it not ignore it which is why the "B" exists

Edge really should only be used as a way to download a decent browser on getting a new computer (Firefox, chrome whatever floats your boat) which is then set as the default browser.

Edge, being the default Microsoft browser is the goto thing for hackers to exploit after all. Plus it's pants.

Well folks I really did mess up.

I investigated the post made by Void1984 on the MBT forums and he is correct.

The patches posted yesterday for both games ARE ONLY THIS YEARS WORK..... they are not consolidators that update over a number of versions they are just this years work so I have to build everything again.......... If you have been patching every year you don't have to do this again but if you have not patched for a couple of year hold off until I can build and test new ones and that may not be for a couple of days

This has now been corrected,The 2022 consolidation upgrade patches are back on the DL page below the 2023 patch so anyone who has not been patching every year now can do that sequentially with the final patch being the 2023 version

As noted above we have a problem but with reflection it is perhaps not as bad as it sounds

There are time lags with all the people to make this work being in different places on the planet so none of what I am writing now is carved in stone and MAY change but I am offering a solution... NOT forgiveness....... it's too late for that

The last consolidator for both games was starting to get too large and we were due to start a new one ( This is why there had been comments about how fast the DL was )

The patch posted is JUST A v16-v17 PATCH...... so this latest one posted yesterday is NOT a consolidator and so if you have been updating all along nothing changes for you

What I hope will happen is the previous consolidator will be reposted and this latest patch will be the potential start of a new series but that idea has not been cleared with Shrapnel yet but it is a plan that causes everyone the least amount of grief

If you have been keeping your game patched up-to-date every year and you installed this patch you are perfectly up-to-date and no matter what is decided to do to get this all straight again it will not affect you as you have every update in your game.

The issue now affects players who don't patch up every year. If they are 3 years out of date and patch with V17 then they will have missed a couple of years which is why I hope what we can do is get the last consolation patch posted back to the game update page and that will allow anyone to properly bring their game up-to-date.

The last consolidator for both games was getting a bit too big anyway and we were overdue for starting a new series so this year's updates for both games would be the start of that.

OK, we are now totally back to normal. Both game's 2022 consolidator upgrade patches are back on each of Shrapnel's DL pages so anyone who has skipped a year or two updating now can do that before installing the 2023 patch.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS ANYONE WHO HAS ALREADY DOWNLOADED THE 2023 PATCH DOES NOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN unless in the case of MBT they Downloaded it before mid-afternoon May 1. If you did please go to the link below and download the "B" version that has the updated USMC picklists. If you downloaded that patch after mid afternoon on May 1 you will be OK just check the "picklists" folder of the game. If you see files dated 2023 you are OK, if the latest ones are 2022 you need to DL and install them again

So......

I'm adding this as a reminder becasue there has already been one customer support complaint that the new scenarios were not showing up in Scenhack.

From the Game guide at the end of the Scenhack section

Important to remember

If you make any changes or add new scenarios you need to press the "Make tables" or "Create Tables" buttons so scenhack can find what you are looking for !

We cannot do that with a patch because there will always be people with their own scenarios in their game so if you use Scenhack you have to remember to run the instructions above so it refreshes its DB and I will endeavour to remember to add that info to future installers
