Ringworlds and Map Editor
I am trying to start my PBW game (Adamant 003), which will have everyone start on a Ringworld. The editor won't let me change them to anything but Rock/None. I know I have done this before, and it worked then. I can't get it to work now. Can anybody give me some help? This is for SEIV 1.49, btw.
Here's what I did: 1) Created customs systems and quadrant in data files. 2) Generated the map in SEIV, cause the map editor likes crashing itself when I try to do this in it. 3) Located suitable starting locations for each empire, and placed starting locations so that it would take less time later. 4) Deleted the star at the 1st starting location. 5) Placed a Ringworld, and set the type/atmosphere to the correct values (such as Ice/Oxygen). 6) Checked the Ringworld to make sure I did it right. The type was Rock/None. I won't post the map file, due to security reasons. Here are the data files I edited: Data.zip |

Anybody have a solution?

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
I can only say to you that I don't have that problem in Gold. So upgrade, damn you ; )

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
not directly, but I've got a workaround. It requires running a few turns offline and a little data file fiddling though.
Start the game as normal; make sure everyone is actually ON their ringworlds. Now, scrap one facility- probably the resupply depot. Go into the data files, copy the atmosphere converted, and make the new converter require no tech and go MUCH faster. Build the new converter, let them do their work, scrap them, build the resupply depot again, change the data files back, start the game. The turn date won't match up to the PBW date, but I can't think of any fix for that. Phoenix-D |

I have Gold. This game was started months ago (before the PBW dark age), and not everyone in it has Gold. So, it will remain v1.49.
quote:
Start the game as normal; make sure everyone is actually ON their ringworlds. So, that won't work. |
Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
I have SE4 1.49, the editor is 1.41. Have generated a map with SE4, saved it, loaded the map with the Editor, added a Ringworld, changed it to Hydro/gas, saved it and finally started a game with it with an Ancient Empire race. The Ringworld shows the correct atmospehre and planet type.

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Yeah, I've done it before, a long time ago. But it isn't working for me right now. Did you get rid of the star and replace it with a Ringworld, or did you simply add a Ringworld to the system?

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
i added a Ringworld on top of a star

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
... but a RW in an empty sector and a RW instead a sun works just fine for me too.

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Well, i think your problem is that you try to CHANGE the atmosphere and planet type AFTER creating the RW, if you change it to the proper values while you add the RW it will work fine.

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
I changed it when I added the Ringworld.

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Well, as i said it worked for me while i create the RW, it doesnt work if i try to change an existing RW.
If you send me the map and the locations to place a RW i will try to edit your map, i have Ancient Empire anyway. |
Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Fryon it is a bug...
If I start a game or join a game with Ringworld or Sphere world starting points we have to let the map maker know our atmosphere type. That way they can create the world so the race can breathe on it. If not it defaults to a huge or large planet. Can you create the map in gold and see if it will load up in 1.49.. |
Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
I've known about that bug for ever. That's why I collected the planet and atmosphere types in the first place. I'll try making one in Gold and see if it works.

Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Ok, thanks to some help from Mirona Thetin, I have figured out the problem:
In the map editor, you cannot edit the Ringworlds if there is no normal star in the system. If there is a star, you can make them whatever you want them to be. No star, no changes. So, you have to make the Ringworld first, and then remove the star. |
Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
Well, i dont think that it matter if there is a sun in the system or not. I tried to add a RW in a system with sun and w/o sun ant it worked fine to add a new RW with whatever atmosphere or planet type.
However i have noticed that editimg an existing RW (or other planet) to an other atmosphere, planet type or planet size will become valid only if one select a new picture, even thought RW of any atmosphere and planet type have all the same picture. |
Re: Ringworlds and Map Editor
I found that the real problem with placing Ringworlds in the Map Editor is that you cannot edit them if they are in the same location as a starting location flag.
