Gold Patch installing problem
The patch installer program tell me that my Version of Space Empire Gold is not correct and it does not install the patch, AFAIK there is only one Gold Version 1.60, any hint?
Thanks. Marco. [ 10 April 2002: Message edited by: Marco ]
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Same problem here. Also, I still have a copy of Space Empires 4 on my hard drive and it selected that file to install to the first time. I did not install it there. I had to move the old SE4 to a different drive first. Why can't the installer let the user tell it where to find SE4Gold as an option?
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
You can specify a different location once it locates the SE4 Gold just pick a different directory.
We have seen a few people have issues, but most are installing okay, we're looking into it. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I had the same problem. Installing the
patch worked after I uninstalled, then reinstalled SEIV Gold. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I don't know if this is the cause. Is it possible in the failed installs that it was trying to update the Demo Version?
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I have installed only the original CD Version plus TDM-ModPack, but, if this can help, just after launching the installer program and before the opening screen was displayed, a message about CTL3D32.DLL not correct Version (I run my computer with Windows NT4 Service Pack 6)appears.

Thank You Dracus.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Richard,
I went there. Didnt see it. The only thing I saw for SE4 download, was the old 1.49 Version. Ive got that one. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I also have the problem with installing the patch.
I am not sure but it may have something to do with having mult installs of the game in the same dir. it maybe reading the wrong one, even though you point it toward the correct one. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
It's there, maybe you need to reload the page from Cache.
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Is there any way to get the patch in vanilla zip format and not as an executable file (.exe).
Some firewalls prevent downloading of .exe files, such as mine here at work. Thanks |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I hope Malfador updates their web page- that's where I went first, and there wasn't any patch mentioned for gold.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I installed the patch and now when I try to play a current game I am told, "Invalid data files - the files currently being used don't match the files used when the game was started. Please check with your host to get the correct data files". Since I *am* the host I re-downloaded the files via the PBW game admin screen but I am still getting the error. Do I have to make yet another install of 1.6 for the sake of my current games?

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
The data files it is talking about are not the files you would download from PBW. It is talking about the datafiles that are in the Data folder of SE4 installation. If you created the game using any sort of mod, you would want to make sure you are using the same mod as you try to play the turn.
You can try reinstalling the game and patching the fresh installation. Some people have also reported problems with zip files from PBW that were fixed by installing the latest Version of Winzip. Hmm. What happens if Malfador changed some of the datafiles between 1.60 and 1.67 (I know they changed the systemtypes to fix the problem with the new nebulaes). Would this cause the datafile check to erroneously tell us we are using different data files when trying to play old 1.60 games?? If so then we might have a problem...
quote:
Originally posted by derb: I installed the patch and now when I try to play a current game I am told, "Invalid data files - the files currently being used don't match the files used when the game was started. Re: Gold Patch installing problem
No luck installing gold patch 1 here.
I renamed my original SE4 and the install program found the directory with Gold Version but told me I didn't have 1.60. But I do. I have 1.60 installed plus a modpack directory with TDM and mounts mod. I may have modified the settings.txt file in data. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I would guess that most of the problems are related to changed data files. Make a backup of your modified files and then do a clean reinstall. Patch it. Copy the patched game to a secure location. Copy your modified files into the new patched game folder. It should work now.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I too had to uninstall/reinstall/patch. I don't have a single mod installed nor have i opened any files and edited them. Maybe they are doing doing a diff on the program settings (like CD music on/off) or something. of course, i just pulled that out of my ***...

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I had the installer fail too - complained it wasn't Version 1.60, even though it was. I had mods installed, but not on the main files.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I had the installer fail as well. I removed the game and reinstalled. Patched up no problems.
I had the old SEIV still on my drive, removed it as well before I retried the intall..... I will note after I removed the previous Versions the "Scanning for Game" part went much faster. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
When I installed the patch it initially failed, then I noticed it was picking the old SEIV game so I changed the directory to the SEIV Gold directory (both are on my computer's C-drive) and it installed fine.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I can confirm that the Mephisto's suggestion works, the patch installer accept to upgrade a fresh Version 1.60 without any change and after it is possible to bring back changes if you save and store it in a separate directory. It is possible even to restore saved games.
For Mephisto: if this can help you for the next TDM-ModPack Version release, after installing the patch all works fine except a error message displayed about EarthAlliance_AI_Construction_Units.txt, this message say: "could not find field "Percentage of Resources to Reserve for Unit Construction" in record 1". The same message is not displayed for Narn Regime. Thanks and best regards. Marco. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
PvK's suggestion didn't work for me, annoyingly. Shrapnel should patch its patch so that Users don't have to jump through all those hoops to get existing games working again!
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
The only problem I had so far with the patch is that the installer proposed the original SE IV (and not SE IV Gold) to be patched, which is of course impossible. I can load and continue SE IV Gold Version 1.60 games, start new games and use my heavily modded own Version without problems until now.
One small quation however: where is the "AI_Construction_Units.txt file" ?? I could not find any. |

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Actually, it's in the folder "samples" IIRC. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Actually we didn't write the patch http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif .
It looks like most of the problems are due to multiple copies being on the same PC, or having both Gold and the original on the same machine. Check and see which it is suggesting when it tries to install.
quote:
Originally posted by derb: PvK's suggestion didn't work for me, annoyingly. Actually the Units.txt should not be in the current release of the Earth Alliance as it was from a beta patch were "Percentage of Resources to Reserve for Unit Construction" line was not yet created. Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Tampa_Gamer and Mephisto thank you! I found the file now.

Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Derb,
Unlike previous patches, v1.60 game files are not compatible with Gold v1.67. To the best of my understanding. Here is what you need to do in order to patch your game in progress. 1) In admin options set your game turn generation to no automatic turns. Players must use v1.60. Once all player turns are uploaded... 2) Go to the admin. request forum at PBW and request that your game be upgraded to v1.67. Once they do so... 3) Generate the turn manually, the resulting turn files will be v1.67 compatible. They will not be 1.60 compatible. All players will need to patch their game to play using them. About the patch: In my experience it is far more "picky" than others indicate. In my case it objected to an additional directory in my game folder created specifically for PBW saves and surprisingly to a downloaded shipsets folder. Frankly, As someone else noted, you are best off moving all your stuff to another directory and doing a clean install of SEIV Gold before patching. Then reinstall your extras. |
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
I renamed the original Gold folder and did a clean install, then patched the new install. I've got v1.49, v1.60, and v1.67 installed and working, but haven't tried to migrate any saved games yet.
[ Edit ] I've successfully migrated two v1.60 solo games to v1.67 now. [ 13 April 2002: Message edited by: capnq ]
|
Re: Gold Patch installing problem
Well, I did not have any problems to run the patch. At the time I applied it, I had four installations of SE4 on my computer (1.49, Gold Beta, and two 1.60 (one with mods included and one vanilla, which was about to be patched). Sure enough after a quick scan the patch.exe found exactly the one that I wanted http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif . Since the program asked for a verification, it would not have been a problem to select a different folder, either.
