Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

I am always having problems thinking up names to call my planets. I do not like just calling them "Cephedri II" or whatever.

Thought it would be useful to those of us with aspirations for the realism of the game is people posted some of the cool planet names they use

Most of mine are called 'New' something where that something is a city or town eg New Basra, New Washington, New Paris etc

others I use are

Atlantis
Dagon
Starfall
Hermes
Avalon
Osiris/Horus
Asgard/Vanaheim
Eden
Kingdom
Dagda

Anyone else have an interesting run no what they do

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

Be careful when renaming planets, other players will see the new names even if they don't have precense in the system and identify them immediately as your colonies.

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

Andres, cheers for the tip.

My military bases in frontier systems remain anonymous. These are names I use for my benign colony worlds and if an alien race knows about these, then I am probably already at war with him

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

Illiad
Cermak I (II, III etc)
Mac I (II, III, etc)
Matrix I etc

Atlas
Hydra
Quin
Argon
also use some of the handles of some of those here on the forum, won't list which ones in case someone becomes offended by their use or lack of use

just some ideas mac

Any ancient race will know about them even if they are clear across the map. If they are evil, then they can plot a beeline straight to your soft innards. If you are more evil than them, you will have thought of this and these renamed worlds are really the honey that coats your trap.

Bman, see any of the strategy threads abot how I defend my planets..

.... I am undeniably nasty and sneaky... I am also a lawyer which combination makes me possibly one of the most evil things on this planet after macaroni cheese and line dancing

Halo is my favorite name for a colony, I usually rename my home planet that.

Here's some good ones (I think):
Aiur
Tarsonis
Char
Mar Sara
Styx
Euphrates
Tigris
Babylon
Judea
Canaan

some others I can't think of right now too...

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

A heavily defended planet that a pbem player was about to attack was renamed HURT.

I liked that name.

The attacking player thought it was funny.

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

Do you think the game would be more interesting if there were a list of planet names the game draws from when generating a map? This would mean different names for every planet, maybe even moons and (extra) stars. Given a long enough list...

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

Gryphin, thanks for that interesting synopsis of your mental state. What on earth has John Norman got to do with this BTW?

Machiavelli, rdouglass, tesco and gauvar, thanks for the sensible input.

Anyone else care to list some names, please feel free.

Regards

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

You are quite welcome GrowlTigga. It is always my pleasure to provide you with important information. You have reveal a lot about yourself by admitting to know who John Noman is. The relevance is that I like the characters of Kamchack and Tarl Cabot and I do use their names for planets.
I also use names of various battles. I realize these are frequently applied to ships.
Lexington
Concord
Bunker Hill
Breeds Hill
New Orleans
Trenton
Ticonderoga
Normandy, (and the beaches there)
Bulge
Brittan
Shilo
Little Big Horn, (in your honor)
Hood
Alamo
You get the idea.

Noting you did not respond to the comment about being off topic.
Enjoy

I Tend to Use Themes for a Star Systems. Some of the phrases are spread across several planets. Yes, my systems will be easy to identify. So will my war ships.
Hmm, GrowlTigga grousing about being off topic? That is a first.

Re: Slightly OT - Interesting planet names

I like my alien worlds to have alien-sounding names, but I also like to be able to track what order they were colonized in.

I'll (usually) name the homeworld something similar to the race name, then go down the alphabet with the same consonant-vowel pattern.

For example, when I'm playing my Rrurrr, their homeworld is Rrur, and the colonies are Ssys, Ttat, Vvev, Wwiw, etc.
