Important notice for PBW Users.
The PBW server move is expected to take place Monday May 6th.
Saturday May 4th (Tomorrow!) at some time during the day, can't be more specific, we will be taking it down for up to a few hours for some final preparations. It will come back up on Saturday sometime and should be available all day Sunday for Last minute game playing. Then on Momday some time it will be going down and will be down for a few days, possibly as long as a week. Sometime tonight I will be turning off the automatic turn processing. Turns will still process when all players upload or if manually forced to run by the game owner, but will not process due to turn timeout. I will leave this off unitl a few days after the server is back up and running in the new location to make sure nobody loses their turn due to the server being down. PBW Admin Team |

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
I have now turned off the Automatic turn processing. As I said before, turns will still process if all players upload, and can be processed manually by the game owner if her wishes to. But they will not run becasue the time limit is reached and not everyone has uploaded.

No, you're just mentally disciplined enough to ignore all the hype from the greeting card, gift, and flower industries. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
(I had to look at the Calendar to verify the date myself.) |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Yes, I am not really sure what is happeing exactly at this moment. Obviously the server did not get taken down as scheduled. Something must have come up at the current data center.
I will let you know when I know. Geoschmo |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Ok, I spoke with Admiral. The shutdown was pushed back. Should happen some time this afternoon/evening.

So, uh, whatever happened to shutting down the server on the 6th?? It was still up when I checked approximately 45 seconds ago... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Damn, just as I was about to die. I'm hanging on with two small colony planets. Lucky for me the aggressor didn't antisipate a large minefield surrounding my Last stand, PBW goes down while I'm on the edge of my seat! Of course this allows me to think of some devilish Strategy to completely rule the galexy!! LOL

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Hi All
The server went down about 1800 on the 7th. What is the current estimate of when it will be back up? Does anyone know where its past and future homes are? Henry |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Est time of return May 14th, 1800 hrs. (Edit: Not the YEAR 1800. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Ok, please be kind as I am inexperienced at PBW (on my first game) and generally am so unfocussed on technology that I think ATMs are run by little dwarfs who sit inside handing out money
First, I presume the server moving means that the PBW game I am involved in is on hold, which means I wont be receiving any new turns and wouldn't be able to uipload them if I did. Secondly, why is everything ending up in Ohio? is it the epicentre of some localised high gravitational field pulling everything into it? half the forum seem to come from Ohio (or Pheonix AZ), what on earth is the deal? us Brits are always told that Ohio is the cloaco maxima of the central US? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
LOL.
I have a theory about that GT. You see, (And this comes from a 25 year resident) Ohio weather is just hideous. It's not uncommon in the spring to have 75 degrees days followed by ice storms 24 hours later. Standard meteorological analysis holds no weight when predicting weather in Ohio. Your typical five day forcast, in most places a pretty good predictor of upcoming weather, is not much more reliable in Ohio than the Farmers Almanac published four times a year. All this makes planning any kind of outdoor activity a little dicey. Throw in the fact that Ohio is just about the most FREAKING BORING PLACE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, and you see why people get very involved in the internet around here. Well that and cow tipping, but that's another story. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Geoschmo [ 09 May 2002, 14:01: Message edited by: geoschmo ] |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
GT, Ohio is the realm of the unknown, especially with the weather as Geo has put forth in his ascertation. What better place to absorb all the fundamentals of game play. We have Cedar Point, Kings Island, and Geauga Lake for R&R for those who need to get away from the stress of every day gaming. In relation to PBW games I would render an opinion that the hosts of this miracle of interactive play, over the course of time most definitly deserve some R&R at prime locations within their respective areas, (especially after putting up with some of us computer illiterates and our numerous questions) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif However, your question does inflict the possiblity of some research into this particular area, therefore, I shall endeavor to pass this along to those colleges within our domain in order to get an unbiased, neutral opinion. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Mac, I didn't understand a lot of your post - are you saying Ohio has some nice bits? I was always under the impression that it was not the most attractive place but was vibrant and busy - a bit like a dead dog lying on an anthill, just without the charm.
Hmmm, I have spent quite a bit of time in the US -I like New Orleans, Savannah, Atlanta (d'em Southern girls!!), Houston, Tucson, Boston, Portland and I love San Fransisco - Cleveland? just doesn't have the same allure as these other places |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Houston has allure?

Hey now, you people up there in Michigan may be Cloaca's, but don't be lumping us in with you.

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
hmmmmm, GT those cities you mention are all either out west or in the south except for Boston, I think you need to allievate some of your misconceptions of our great Midwest, come on, where else can you play baseball in sleet and snow come April, h... the lake doesn't even thaw out until May, you've never seen anything until you've seen polution seep up thru the ice on the lake and rivers with the sun's rays hitting and radiating it back into the atmosphere with all those different and unusual colors. And remember, Burke Lake Airport, which is on the Lake here in Cleveland, was built on top of a Land fill where they used to burn garbage... Brings back memories of when I was a kid and my dad used to drive past it on the way to Euclid Beach Park....the smoke and smells are beyond the ability to describe..
In reality, Ohio's not that bad a place to be, it does have many good points especially in the bouncing ba-ba-loos department http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif just some ideas mac |

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Hmmm.... as the token European on this particular post and English to boot, it would seem that even you damned yankees have differing views about Ohio vis a vis its contribution to the planet as a global heritage site.
The net conclusion is that it is a bit of a stinker, has an affinity to an amphibian's naughty bits and is a place with a stack of young fillies who are enhanced in the jubbly department (or is Mac just fantasizing again?) Hmmm.. Mac, Boston is pseudo-European in ts outlook, as are many of the southern cities so it is only natural I would be attracted that way. I lived for 9 months in San Franscisco and liked it a lot, but then I was living wit my pop idol at the time and got use to seeing transvestities before breakfast Conclusion - Madrid = great, Cleveland = yuk unless you like grain elevators |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
If by "fishing tackle shops" you mean, sleezy porn stores, I whole-heartedly agree.
|
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Heh, actually GT the grain elevators are in Toledo, not Clevland. But what's 120 miles, er sorry 190 kilometers between friends. Roughly the distance fom London to Birmingham I think.
What you have to realize about Ohio is that it's hard to pin down. It varies so much from city to city, north to south, east to west. It's very much like a small Version of the United States in that respect. I live in Southwest Ohio myself. Dayton. The home of the Wright Brothers. The ones that invented the Airplane, yeah that's them. Dayton is really just a large town that thinks it's a big city. It's kind of given us a complex I am afraid. We are like the shortest kid in the class that is always making noise just to be heard. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif To me Cleveland might as well be New York City. But I am sure people in Cleveland would think that's crazy talk from some hick Northern-Kentuckyian. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Geoschmo |

I'm amazed at how both of "my" cities are being referred to, here. I'm originally from Houston, TX, and I definitely prefer it to Ohio.. Geo, will the server be installed in a facility of yours, or did you just find a better hosting deal, here in Ohio? Either way, if we ever play a "real-time" game, you'll have a significant ping advantage. ROFL.. --Ed |

As a Californian, the best thing I can say for Ohio is that I'd rather live in Ohio than Oklahoma http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

You crazy Ohionians, I see you and your cars on my highways going to our lakes and our forests because you don't have any left. Well, at least not much.

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Is it possible to give an hourly update? There was a web site that would show second by second progress of aircraft. It would show a plane flying over a map and give airspeed and ETA. It was a nice graphic. I would love to follow the UPS van progress from NY to Ohio. Ohio BTW is Japanese for hello. Thank for all your help Geoschmo.

I meant no disrespect. I lived in Japan off an on for Five years. Hello sounded like "ohio" and orange juice sounded like cow-do pissu donk. It's like they had a diffrent word for everything.

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Interesting, my snide remarks about Ohio has obviously triggered some deep-felt feelings amongst all you North Americans.
The general consensus again appears to be that it is not a particularily nice place to live, but that a fair chunk of you obviously have an affinity with the place. There also appears to be quite pronounced bigotry dependant on whereabouts you live in the state. Interesting, the base conclusion has to be to move out to California, the weather is better and the young ladies are all "enhanced" |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Yes can you give us the tracking number for the box so we can all watch its progress? The reason I asked for a real thread on PBW status was because everytime I comer here and see this thread has been updated, I get all excited and run to PBW to see if we are back up and am sadly dissapointed. These mood swings are bad for my health. Do not be surprised if I bring a lawsuit against you for it a few years from now. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Gosh, Bman, since you're this eager, does this mean you'll stop being the Last one to take your turn three times out of five? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
You know what it is, Geo? Bman has finally figured out where on the starmap my own tiny, peaceful empire is located. And now he's just panting with eagerness to come and kick some monkey-butt... |
Re: Important notice for PBW Users.
Allright Bman. Some real news finally.
I am probably going to regret telling you all this, but I have received the server, and it's in one piece. I am still going to need a couple days to get it set up in the new location, so don't plan on being able to use PBW before Monday night sometime. But you can rest assured it didn't get lost in the mail at least. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Geoschmo [ 10 May 2002, 17:28: Message edited by: geoschmo ] |

And I agree with Geo, Ohio is a nice enough place to live if you can deal with freakish weather. (Though it should be noted that the past decade has been especially freakish with the seasons getting all mishmashed...) It's just provincial and so rather difficult for 'visiting' types to stomach. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
