Important notice for PBW Users.

The PBW server move is expected to take place Monday May 6th.

Saturday May 4th (Tomorrow!) at some time during the day, can't be more specific, we will be taking it down for up to a few hours for some final preparations. It will come back up on Saturday sometime and should be available all day Sunday for Last minute game playing.

Then on Momday some time it will be going down and will be down for a few days, possibly as long as a week.

Sometime tonight I will be turning off the automatic turn processing. Turns will still process when all players upload or if manually forced to run by the game owner, but will not process due to turn timeout. I will leave this off unitl a few days after the server is back up and running in the new location to make sure nobody loses their turn due to the server being down.

I have now turned off the Automatic turn processing. As I said before, turns will still process if all players upload, and can be processed manually by the game owner if her wishes to. But they will not run becasue the time limit is reached and not everyone has uploaded.

Yes, I am not really sure what is happeing exactly at this moment. Obviously the server did not get taken down as scheduled. Something must have come up at the current data center.

I will let you know when I know.

Hi All

The server went down about 1800 on the 7th. What is the current estimate of when it will be back up?

Does anyone know where its past and future homes are?

Ok, please be kind as I am inexperienced at PBW (on my first game) and generally am so unfocussed on technology that I think ATMs are run by little dwarfs who sit inside handing out money

First, I presume the server moving means that the PBW game I am involved in is on hold, which means I wont be receiving any new turns and wouldn't be able to uipload them if I did.

Secondly, why is everything ending up in Ohio? is it the epicentre of some localised high gravitational field pulling everything into it? half the forum seem to come from Ohio (or Pheonix AZ), what on earth is the deal? us Brits are always told that Ohio is the cloaco maxima of the central US? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.

LOL.

I have a theory about that GT. You see, (And this comes from a 25 year resident) Ohio weather is just hideous. It's not uncommon in the spring to have 75 degrees days followed by ice storms 24 hours later. Standard meteorological analysis holds no weight when predicting weather in Ohio. Your typical five day forcast, in most places a pretty good predictor of upcoming weather, is not much more reliable in Ohio than the Farmers Almanac published four times a year. All this makes planning any kind of outdoor activity a little dicey.

Throw in the fact that Ohio is just about the most FREAKING BORING PLACE ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, and you see why people get very involved in the internet around here. Well that and cow tipping, but that's another story. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

GT, Ohio is the realm of the unknown, especially with the weather as Geo has put forth in his ascertation. What better place to absorb all the fundamentals of game play. We have Cedar Point, Kings Island, and Geauga Lake for R&R for those who need to get away from the stress of every day gaming. In relation to PBW games I would render an opinion that the hosts of this miracle of interactive play, over the course of time most definitly deserve some R&R at prime locations within their respective areas, (especially after putting up with some of us computer illiterates and our numerous questions) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif However, your question does inflict the possiblity of some research into this particular area, therefore, I shall endeavor to pass this along to those colleges within our domain in order to get an unbiased, neutral opinion. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

Mac, I didn't understand a lot of your post - are you saying Ohio has some nice bits? I was always under the impression that it was not the most attractive place but was vibrant and busy - a bit like a dead dog lying on an anthill, just without the charm.

Hmmm, I have spent quite a bit of time in the US -I like New Orleans, Savannah, Atlanta (d'em Southern girls!!), Houston, Tucson, Boston, Portland and I love San Fransisco - Cleveland? just doesn't have the same allure as these other places

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Well, Ohio is a crossroads in many ways; that's part of why things end up here. It's a crossroads of urban and rural--unlike, say, California, which is either urban, desert, or national park, or Nebraska, where the word "urban" has no meaning. My own hometown (Toledo) is 1) the second-largest freshwater port in the US (by traffic volume) after Chicago; 2) home of the largest grain elevators in the world because of all the corn that comes through here; 3) a major railway hub for grain, coal, and cars, among other things; 4) the cross-point of the the most heavily-trafficked east-west highway in the US (I-80) and one of the most heavily-trafficked north-south highways (I-75); 5) 1 hour from Detroit, 2.5 from Cleveland, 3 from Cincinatti, 4 from Chicago, 5.5 from Pittsburgh.

Ohio's right in the center of everything, which of course makes us both a gravitational well [b]and[/a] a bit of a cloaca. But remember that a cloaca passes not only waste, but also new life.

hmmmmm, GT those cities you mention are all either out west or in the south except for Boston, I think you need to allievate some of your misconceptions of our great Midwest, come on, where else can you play baseball in sleet and snow come April, h... the lake doesn't even thaw out until May, you've never seen anything until you've seen polution seep up thru the ice on the lake and rivers with the sun's rays hitting and radiating it back into the atmosphere with all those different and unusual colors. And remember, Burke Lake Airport, which is on the Lake here in Cleveland, was built on top of a Land fill where they used to burn garbage... Brings back memories of when I was a kid and my dad used to drive past it on the way to Euclid Beach Park....the smoke and smells are beyond the ability to describe..

In reality, Ohio's not that bad a place to be, it does have many good points especially in the bouncing ba-ba-loos department http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Hmmm.... as the token European on this particular post and English to boot, it would seem that even you damned yankees have differing views about Ohio vis a vis its contribution to the planet as a global heritage site.

The net conclusion is that it is a bit of a stinker, has an affinity to an amphibian's naughty bits and is a place with a stack of young fillies who are enhanced in the jubbly department (or is Mac just fantasizing again?)

Hmmm.. Mac, Boston is pseudo-European in ts outlook, as are many of the southern cities so it is only natural I would be attracted that way. I lived for 9 months in San Franscisco and liked it a lot, but then I was living wit my pop idol at the time and got use to seeing transvestities before breakfast

Conclusion - Madrid = great, Cleveland = yuk unless you like grain elevators

Re: Important notice for PBW Users.

Heh, actually GT the grain elevators are in Toledo, not Clevland. But what's 120 miles, er sorry 190 kilometers between friends. Roughly the distance fom London to Birmingham I think.

What you have to realize about Ohio is that it's hard to pin down. It varies so much from city to city, north to south, east to west. It's very much like a small Version of the United States in that respect.

I live in Southwest Ohio myself. Dayton. The home of the Wright Brothers. The ones that invented the Airplane, yeah that's them. Dayton is really just a large town that thinks it's a big city. It's kind of given us a complex I am afraid. We are like the shortest kid in the class that is always making noise just to be heard. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

To me Cleveland might as well be New York City. But I am sure people in Cleveland would think that's crazy talk from some hick Northern-Kentuckyian. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">You won't find any grain elevators in Cleveland. Even so, no there isn't much to like about Cleveland. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif As an Ohio resident myself I have to say that it's not really 'one' place. You've got the northern lake shore 'rust belt' area, you've got the mid-state 'boom-town' of Columbus (also the capital), you've got the southeastern 'Appalachia' region, and you've the more typical 'midwest' type regions in the west and southwest of the state. Cincinatti is more like a part of Kentucky than the rest of Ohio. And Toledo is a suburb of Detroit (it would be the second largest city in Michigan if it were to 'secede' and join Michigan...) It's a very diverse place. There aren't many states with as wide a variety of social and geographic conditions scattered so widely. Most states are heavily weighted towards one demographic/economic situation or another and have only small minorities of the others. Here we've got equal portions of industry and agriculture, urban and rural, etc.

I don't think the 'fillies' here are particularly well endowed. You'd want to go to California for that, where they have the highest proportion of women with artifical enhancements. The movie industry, ya know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Hey, Toledo is not a suburb of Detroit! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif Of course, Toledo was nearly part of Michigan: the two states fought a war over it, and Ohio lost http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif (Toledo was awarded to Ohio, but Michigan was given the entire UP, replete with its copper mines, in return). <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Actually, that depends on your location in the state as well. In the western, flatter areas of the state it gets pretty &lt;bleep&gt; hot in the summer, too, and there's lots of humidity to go with it. Which is worse? 100 degrees in the desert or 100 degrees in the swamp? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif But do you also have winters that can go 20 below zero in Arizona? I don't think so. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif In the eastern, especially northeastern parts of the state you get lake effect which means tons of snow in the winter and pretty much continual cloudiness even when something isn't falling. Most people probably know that the worst place in the country for lake effect snow is Buffalo, NY at the end of Lake Erie. Well, Pittsburgh and Cleveland aren't far behind. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Why are you surprised at the regional chauvinism? Isn't it the same, or even worse, in Europe? At least here there are highway driving distances between the 'divisions' of the populace. In Britain, and even in the denser cities of the US, there are neighborhoods that have distinct identities and hate each other. Now that's weird. People in the same city having 'cultural differences' with each other...

And I agree with Geo, Ohio is a nice enough place to live if you can deal with freakish weather. (Though it should be noted that the past decade has been especially freakish with the seasons getting all mishmashed...) It's just provincial and so rather difficult for 'visiting' types to stomach. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
