Version, Version Version!!!???

I'm disappointed to see the Version I got Last month is not compatible with PBW. I'm 1.60 and there, you can only use 1.49 and another I don't remember.

So, does that mean everyone who got Gold and/or those who use the 1.67 patch are SOL for PBW?

What are the bennies for the 1.67 patch anyway? Sorry, I'm sure this has been covered in other threads.....

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

Um, I am playing in three 1.67 games right now at PBW.

There are many people who choose to still use 1.49, and that is their call, but there are many others using 1.67.

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

Gil,

Not sure what you were looking at, but PBW supports Ver 1.49, 1.60, 1.67, and several mods for Versions 1.49 and 1.67. In fact we were still supporting 1.41 and several mods for it up till a couple weeks ago, but noone was using those so I took them out.

Did you maybe read an old FAQ message or something that didn't list the Version you want? If so let us know so we can correct it.

OK, new probs...

If I go to the front page (where you choose between bells & whistles or functionality) with "Java Script" enabled and make a choice, no next page loads, and on top of that, it starts another Navigator.

If I go to that page with "J S" disabled, I get to the Log-In page. I've tried to log in with "J S' both ways and cookies both ways but the "Wait" cursor does its deal until I move it away from the button then, it resets and acts like I never pressed the button.

End results= I can't log in. I'm sure there's a combination I haven't stumbled on yet. Am I supposed to have either JS or cookies on?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Actually the FAQ had a LONG overdue update yesterday, so the answer is yes. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

As far as the problem loading the page, I am not sure. I am not the browser guru that Lazarus is. Are you using IE? What Version.

Good deal on the update.

I'm using Netscape Navigator 4.5.

Just tried to Log In several more times with no JS or Cookies to no avail... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

It is a sad but true fact that IE dominates the web. Try updating IE to 6, then use it. I am sure you will then be successful. 4.76 was the Last reliable update to Netscape before AOL bought them out, and Netscape has only gone downhill since then. The newest, best, features of the web can be had with IE6 (all of the security patches necessary).

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

AOL ruined NS. Nuff said, switch to IE 6. It works, and its not owned by AOL.

(NOTE: AOL stands for: Always Off Line.)

Better ISPs? Try any broadband service. DSL, Cable, etc. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Always on, and, best of all, they are not AOL!!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

Don't EVEN get me started on DSL (or the lack there-of).

The answer must be something other than the browser I'm using. Is anyone else using NN 4.5 or 4.6 successfully with PBW?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The browser *is* the issue.
NS 4.5 does not correctly support recent Java progs, so upgrade it or switch to IE5+ (which is already on your system if you're under Windows... damned Bill ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

I use Opera 6 (free Version). PBW works fine, although some other websites do give me trouble (for example, I can't change my avatar on this site=-(

It's a quick, neat, compact browser though, with functions that IE and NS and AOL and others just don't have. 11 meg downoad from www.opera.com, well worth it.

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

Gil,

Unfortunatly our UI/Browser guy is out of town for a few days and can't be reaached. I tried downloading Communicator 4.5 to see if I could access the site. It seemed to work the first couple times, but now it's hanging up.

Perhaps when Lazarus returns he can tell you something more constructive, but I do know that some browser Versions just don't work. We are a free site run by volunteers and supported by donations. Even some large commercial websites have browser incompatability issues. That's just the way it is unfortunatly when you have competing browsers that are hoistile to each other the way MS and Netscape are.

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

As I mentioned in our e-mail discussion about this, PBW's old text-based UI gets along with older Versions of Netscape much better than the new graphics-heavy UI does.

Re: Version, Version Version!!!???

A little off-topic, but I've taken to using IE to view the Shrapnel homepage, along with most of the webcomics I read on a daily basis. The problem is almost always with Java/Javascript; the biggest offender is pop-up and pop-under (especially those !#$^!#^ pop-under ads). Almost every time a pop-under ad appears, Netscape (Version 4.6, I think) hangs, and the only way to fix is exiting Netscape, going to Task Manager, and killing the extra Netscape process. So I've all but given up and use the Bill Gates monopoly-approved browser for most things now.

I used Opera a couple years ago, but I don't want to install it at work & my girlfriend would rather use IE, so until I have room for multiple computers at home, I'm stuck with IE...
