Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

Yes, I'm trying to compile yet another thematic list of shipnames. This time it's 'heros' and other major characters of SciFi and Fantasy stories. Literature, mythology, movies, tv, are all fair game. But I want active characters. Not 'also present' types but really powerful and dangerous types. Originally I was going to call the list 'Heros' but I don't think there are enough big-time protagonist/hero names without going into weirdly obscure books and/or using very ordinary sounding names that might conflict with other lists. The biggest problem is that some of the best sources of names, like Greek mythology, are already used in another list. Some of the names I've already got are kind of marginal as it is. And, please note, female characters would go into a different list. With that intro, here are the names I've come up with so far:

Ali Baba
Aladdin
Angatyr
Aramis
Athos
Atreyu
Beowulf
Buck Rogers
Captain Kirk
Conan
Corum
Corwin
Count Brass
Cyrano de Bergerac
Doc Savage
Dvim Tvar
Elric
Enkidu
Erekose
Eternal Champion
Fafhrd
Flash Gordon
Forrest Gump
Gilgamesh
Grey Mouser
Han Solo
Havelock
Hawkmoon
Heathcliff

Theleb Kaarna
Tyrone Slothrop
Urlik
Vainamoinen
Yossarian
Yyrkoon

Should "Captain Kirk" be listed down in the J's for James Kirk?
Titles don't appear in any other names on the list...

Re: Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

All the King Arthur related names are used in another list titled 'Chivalry', just like all the greek heroes are used in the Greek list. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I've also got alist of American Indian tribes that includes a few famous/mythic indivuduals like Hiawatha. See how hard it can be to come up with names once you've got to avoid inter-locking lists? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Here are a few from my kid's current favorite book series (I have to admit to liking it too):

Harry Potter http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
Voldemort http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif
Albus Dumbledore
Hagrid
Sirius Black
Hermione Granger
Ron Weasley
Severus Snape
Remus Lupin
Draco Malfoy

Don't laugh. There is some serious firepower (some good, some evil) in that list. I have to admit, though, that they don't sound too serious.

Re: Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

Yeah, I've been thinking of a seperate comic characters list. People with weird powers like contemporary superheros seemed like a seperate Category to me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I might not be able to gather enough names to make a decent list without them though. I like to have at least 100 names before putting a list to use.

The Transformers names sound like they'd be suitable for the Borg... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

Well, since you have Kirk, how about
Jonathan Archer
Jean-Luc Picard
Benjamin Sisko (aka The Emissary)

You know, you could easily get 100 names from Star Trek alone! Maybe you should make a Star Trek name set. Wouldn't it be fun to go into battle against a monster with the "Commodore Decker?"

A few other suggestions:
Ged (Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin)
Paul Atreides (Dune)
Commander Adama (Battlestar Galactica)
Dr. Who
Dr. Frankenstein
Dr. Jekyll
Dave Bowman (2001: A Space Odyssey)
H.A.L. (good for ships with MCs)
Capt. Nemo
The Time Traveler (hero of The Time Machine, by Wells; a lousy name but the only one Wells gives; maybe the movie gives him a name?)
Commander John Koenig (Moonbase Alpha)

And my all-time Favorites: (drum roll, please)

This link might help you.

http://www.whataslacker.com/scifi/html/gp3.shtml

BTW, does anyone know the name of the TV series that involved a gihugic space ship that was sort of an ark, but most of the people on board no longer knew they were on a space ship, and it was on a collision course with something, and the heros were trying to make their way to the secondary bridge, each week encountering a different culture that had developed in a different section of the space ark?
(How's that for a run-on?)

Or the name of the series that had aliens attacking Earth, and the humans had a moonbase and undersea bases and ships that flew in space, in air, and under water?

Both of these were on US TV in the 1960's.

Geo:

Boy, add Space: 1999 and the Buck Rogers revival and you've got all the 'bad 70s hair' SciFi shows... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Even if UFO was made in the late 60s they've got those 70s hairstyles...

I had almost completely forgotten Starlost. I only had a vague memory of some strange series on PBS that I thought was called "Ark II" but maybe that was what they named it when it was broadcast in the US?

Re: Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

Possibly. Both of them are really before my time. I did have a vague recolection of the interceptor ship on the UFO series. I think I may have had one as a kid. But I don't remember the show at all.

Funny you mention Space 1999, cause according to the UFO website they were cancelled because te production company wanted to move on to doing that one instead. Apparently they are by the same people.

Thanks for the include in the list.
Not to be picky but it is: "Gryphin"

Re: Collaboration: SciFi and Fantasy character names

"Paul Bunyan" is correct; the other spelling is a mistake. Other figures from American folklore would be:

Pecos Bill
John Henry
Joe Magarac
Casey Jones
Johnny Appleseed

but some of those don't fit the hero characteristics you wanted very well.

"The Starlost" premiered in 1975, had Harlan Ellison and Ben Bova among the writers, and starred Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey).

"Ark II" premiered in 1976, and had little else to recommend it that I recall.

Thanks for reminding me of Starlost (or, I do remember it being called "Ark II"). I have been trying to remember that show for years, but couldn't remember what it was called. Everyone I described it to had never heard of anything like it. You just never know what you are going to find on this forum! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
