Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games

I have a very large collection of Table Top wargames but never play them much anymore due to computers....do miss it tho

Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Well I play monopoly with my girlfriend. I always win, she thinks its luck...I just know its a refined strategy I learnt when I was 6 and have applied it to every game since then.
Back in my university days alot of my friends played Warhammer 40k. Its always seemed to end in arguements and a wierd arms race that involved forking out lots of money for a piece of lead. Of course I was living on a government allowance back then, which barely covered alcohol, drug and rail transport needs so I was relegated to playing a bemused spectator and even more bemused ring in. Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Fuedal by 3m with the Avalon Hill combat rules. I play with a bunch of guys every 3 weeks and we make up our own games. I have gotten cramps from cutting and pasting to make our own counters. We play on 3 4 foot by 11 foot Boards with one inch hexes. We have a space game, A RIP game which is a cross between Panzer blitz and Blitzkreig, 1648 Game which is like Europa Universalis, and a strange 'Civilization' game, and a few other odds and ends games. IF we had someone who could program we could Knock out some prety good games.
SPI's StragetyII game really caught my Eye but I only played Once and lost most of the game over the years. If we keep going the way we are with Electronics (getting cheaper) I think we will most board games in an Electronic Version. |

on topic though, im shocked an horrified that Battletech didnt make the list. it might not be much on realism, and sure the art was stolen, but its one of the best tactical games ever writen. i tend to favor pre TR 2750 stuff, but it was all good. i think i still have some old beta test stuff in a box somewhere. recently, i have had the chance to play a couple games from a small press company (i forget the name) on the 1939 war in finland. Blood on the Snow was the title of the first one, and there has been at least one sequel. they also have some games set in the pacific theatre, island combat and such. nice maps, chit based games, fast play. the rules are easy and effective, and the games are fairly true to history. |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Umm, let's see.... Chess, ... um,... chess, and then I play some, um, ... chess, ... and a little Monopoly, and, um, what else... I play chess sometimes. Oh, and did I mention that I like to play chess? Not that I'm any good at it, really, but it's fun none the less. My wife likes Scrabble, so I play that every so often. And I play some chess, too.
EDIT: D'oh! How could I forget Vampire: the Masquarade??? That was a fun game. But I don't have any of the books, and no one to play it with now that I'm out of college, and no time to play it..... [ June 06, 2002, 14:18: Message edited by: dumbluck ] |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
I played the Avalon Hill "Great Campaigns of the Civil War" series nonstop. And then I got a computer. I really should try to play them again, but the stacks of counters falling over and figuring out morale and attack ratios etc. for myself would be to much like work after having it all done for me.

Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Fun family games:
Sorry! (Our house rule is that you HAVE to say "SORRRRRRY!" when you knock someone back, like in the Carol Burnett Show skit where Mama's Family plays the game.) Parcheesi (We play with D&D dice set. You can roll any 2 dice. This speeds up the game and adds more strategy.) Lord of the Rings board game Settlers of Cataan (I can't believe none of you Europeans mentioned that one.) Samurai and of course Risk, Life, Monopoly, and chess. |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Remember UNO
And Mills Brothers Mileage game. I believe it was a french game. You had to travel a certain distance for points (card game ) You could play a flat tire card etc... I really enjoyed that one. |

Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
I've been collecting board games since I was 13; if I had to pick a favorite, I'd probably go with Avalon Hill's _Merchant of Venus_.
BTW, the two card games that mac mentioned are spelled Pinochle and Euchre. |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Favourate Board / Table top games
Hardcore Wargames: - Starship Troopers (The proper Version) - Flat Top (WW2 Carrier battles) - Trireme (Ancient Naval Battles) FRP - AD&D - Runequest - Traveller Shorter games for Groups - Illuminati - Aliens - Battle Of The Halji (For grossness!) Hmm. That leaves me one more to total ten. Oh yeah - we used to play a lot of 'Judge Dredd' at uni. Now, if someone could mod SE4 for commando raids rather than full scale occupation, then we could have a Starship Trooperesque game module for resolution...... Pit Bull. |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Y'all are bringing back so many memories... I'd forgotten about playing Illuminati in college. That, and Star Fleet Battles, led to failing out my freshman year of college. Oh, and AD&D didn't help any.
I used to be a good Othello/Reversi player, Life is still good for a laugh now & then; and Clue is pretty good if you have at least 3 people. I play Bridge, Spades, and Hearts with my girlfriend's parents; if we have more than four people, we generally play "Hand and Foot", a variation on Canasta. With my family (and/or friends), we play various party games: Cranium, Sagarian, Scattergories, Hummmble, Outburst, Taboo, Rack-o, Uno, Mille Bornes, the list just goes on for quite a while and I don't even remember the names anymore... I haven't played Monopoly in years; I used to play with a (now ex-) girlfriend, and since my goal was to find "alternate" ways to pay rent, it wasn't a very serious game... Oh, and I played Risk a few times back in college too. How about Car Wars? That was good for a diVersion from RPG's (I won't bother listing all the RPG's I used to play...) I think I've gone on long enough. Anyone else? |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
My favourite table top game is rod hockey. You know with the little hockey men that turn and twist...very fun stuff.
I guess my favourite board game would be Balderdash where you make up fake definitions for words you never heard of before...very fun. I play Scrabble with my wife a lot, but she almost always wins. I would say our vocab is the same but she just knows how to make the best moves at every turn. I least I have Trivia games http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
A few friends of mine and I (12 years ago) used to take 5 risk Boards and combine them all. So you could only travel from one board to the other at alaska and kam..(i am not going to try)... 20 people would play. You would be spread out over the 5 Boards and then we played until there was one person left. ( mind you this would take a few days)

Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
D&D. Little lead men on the table top, running around and killing orcs. We had a big pLastic sheet that you unrolled and could write on with overhead markers. We also had a huge piece of paper with one inch squares drawn on it. Life was good.
I did buy the D&D Battlesystem, which was a table top war game and we played out a few big battles that were worked into the campaign, but it was not as much fun. With Mom and Dad we played Life, Careers and Rummoli. Sure, Rummoli is a card game, but with that big pLastic sheet and all the pennies we saved up, it took up as much space as a board game. Backgammon was also big with Dad and I, as was Stratego. He had no idea what he was doing, he just liked seeing his young son get excited when the cunning plans worked out. Of course, I did not realize this until I was much older, so I was convinced I was a Stratego god. |

Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
well most of the games listed..I have played at one time or another
but as for favorite, probably that would have to be Avalon Hill's Squad Leader. GURPS is my favorite rpg, AD&D a close second |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
Rod hockey! Wow, I had forgotten about that, but it is truly a great “table top” game. Might not be so well known outside of Canada. On a similar theme, how many others played football by sliding a coin across the desk in school until the teacher came and took it away from you?
Recently I have been playing some Magic! It is an unusual card game that is quite good. |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
My favourite non-computer games:
RPGS: D&D AD&D Vampire the Masquerade Table-top: Full Thrust Board games: Kill Doctor Lucky (Cheap *** Games) Backgammon and probably lots more I am forgetting right now http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Your Favorite Board/Table Top Games
I play board or war games most weeks. I play a lot of 'german' style games with friends socially present Favorites are:
Ursuppe Bausack Apples to Apples Settlers Carcoissarne (however spelt) Robo Rally Falling Perudo I have introduced many non-game players to these. They are all great games I can reccomend. I am a member of a large games club in SW London (60+ members). More seriously I tend to play: Babylon 5 Wars Bridge SFB DBM Go I also have high hopes for Fleet Action 2 For roleplaying I used to play GURPS but now I am dedicated to FUDGE. Not only is it a superb game, it is shareware! As a note, I only tend to play computer games that use the screen as a board for multiplayer interaction like SE4. I do not tend to play computuer-computer games. I play: SE4 Combat Mission Stars Worms. Chris. |
