Odd email from Shrapnel

Umm... I just got this email from intel@shrapnel.com:

----------------------------------------------
Subject: A IE 6.0 patch
This is a IE 6.0 patch
I wish you would enjoy it.
----------------------------------------------

It has a 138KB file attached. What gives? Has someone hacked the shrapnel mail server or something?

Sounds like Shrapnel's mail server got a virus.

It is possible that the headers are faked. For example Klez takes a random address from the adress book of an infected computer. You could check the headers if there is another e-mail adress there.

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

I too would think it was the Klez virus. Shrapnel has nothing to do with it, someone’s machine is infected and this person has Shrapnel in his address book.

You know I have been getting a lot of these from differant sources lately. Most are from free-email.

One was about a new web page. A humorus message, a special gift, etc.

I checked with symatric, and they say that there is a rash of new email bugs going around. I even got one from my angelfire account. Oh that was an eye opener.

My system is clean, doubled checked by two virus scan programs and one web based one. I think perhaps someone my have been infected by a virus and simply does not know that they have it yet.

The easy thing to do is get a virus protection program, update it, and run it. Find the virus and kill it.

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

Again, it's VERY unlikely that the problem is actually with Shrapnels email server. They make their living on the web, and they are completly up to date as far as virus protection and what not I am sure.

Almost certainly it is someone else, one of us that visits shrapnel, that got it. As Zarix and Mephisto point out, some viruses will get addresses from your book and send out emails that appear to come from somewhere else other than your machine. This makes it harder to pinpoint who is actually the source of the virus. If it sent out 50 emails all from me, people would be telling me I have a virus. But if it sends 50 emails from my machine, and puts 50 different return addresses on it, then how will you know they actually came form me? There are ways to tell, but the tendancy is to assume it's really frmo who it says it's from.

I support about 100 Users. At least 2 per month get the same kind of email notice.
It always turns out that someone they know has the Klez virus on their home PC.

I've stopped counting how many copies of Klez I've gotten; must be over a dozen by now.

The weirdest one claimed it was mailed from the PBW server, during the time that the server was offline with a dead motherboard.

The most annoying one was bounced to me because it couldn't be delivered to the intended address.

Boy, I must be a real net.hermit since I've only gotten one copy of the Klex virus ever... I guess nobody has my email address. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I haven't gotten any. Of course, I rarely get e-mailed, and those that do e-mail me don't quite understand the concept of "Address Book". Or of "Operating System" and "Internet Browser" for that matter... :̃

My klez experience is down to 2 per day now that I have convinced everyone I know to get clean. At the peak of my experience with klez in my circle of contacts, I got as many as 7 per day.

For about a week solid two weeks back I was bombarded by different Versions of Klez. I deleted them all.

Wow. This is the first time I've ever gotten Klez.

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

Well, I just got Klez'ed. Got back from my vacation and was checking my email. I never open attachments, but apparently one was rigged for Outlook Express to auto open something (or something like that...), so when I deleted one suspicious email the next one previewed and seemed to do something, though I couldn't tell what. I deleted it, but lo and behold the next morning I got 51 bounced emails from old addresses in my address book (along with a few bounces by systems telling me I was infected with W32.KLEZ or some such. I am on my nice clean (and currently isolated) laptop right now while I'm working on killing the little bugger on my two networked desktops. Teach me to not keep my machines updated with nice virus checker files. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

I stopped using OE a long time ago. I think a lot of M$ software try to tell you what you should do instead of the other way around. Except for a certain network problem I'm happily using Pegasus Mail as my mail client.

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

My first and only experience with getting Klez in my inbox was from someone who was deliberately trying to send it to me. Two attempts, actually; both had information that a simple address-book-mass-mailing wouldn't have had -- it's easy enough to recognise that it wasn't done with personal intent when it says "IE.pif", but it's not so easy to forgive-and-forget when it says "verbs.pif" (which is specific lingo to the BYOND community that I'm a part of).

I contacted their ISP (the headers were very poorly faked, so finding their ISP was easy as pie), but they never responded. =P

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

Up until now, it never seemed worth the effort to get rid of OE, but that will probably change now! Whatever I've got now seems to be putting up a pretty good fight against both Norton and McAfee, but I think I am making progress. Fortunately, I have just about everything backed up that is of importance, so if all else fails I can reformat my system, but I don't think that will be necessary.

I sure would like to get my claws into someone out there that is responsible for this beast, though! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif

I have never gotten klez...

*I feel so left alone.*

Do any of you run Norton? There is an option for it to scan incoming attachments automatically and deletes it as soon as it detects something, I believe.

Alpha Kodiak June 30th, 2002 02:51 AM

Re: Odd email from Shrapnel

Yes, Norton does have such an option and it works quite well. I have it at work. Unfortunately, my home system was not adequately protected (but it will be, once this mess is resolved!)
