Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

Any SEIV fans also Fantasy Football fans? Enough so that it would be worth starting a league for this season? Interested, let me know.

If you aren't interested or can't stand Fantasy Football, please don't abuse me too much. I know it's all teribly geeky, but I like it anyway. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

If you don't know what Fantasy Football is, you probably wouldn't be interested anyway. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I would be interested. The league I was in Last year doesn't seem to be playing this year.

Cool. I am not alone.

Well if we get three or four more I'll set something up. Then some others can sneak in and join without announcing it in the forum here and embarasing themselves. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Although I am more of a baseball fan, I'd be interested in joining a football league.

EDIT: I have experienced the pain of leading the league in points and having a losing record as well.

Anyone else read the comic strip "Zits"? They're doing a riff on Fantasy Football this week - the two teenagers in the strip are using famous females for the "fantasy" football players... with ideas like Halle Berry tackling Britney Spears, and they end up rolling in the mud... vivid imagery, eh?

Yes, I like Fantasy Football columns in Times and Daily Telegragh ! But I made a mistake of backing Liverpool players instead of Arsenal.

Yes AK, it will be free. Personally I would prefer using one of the availabel free Online league services to trying to put something together myself. There are two goods ones I know of, Yahoo and Sandbox (www.sandbox.com). Both have pay and free leagues. I would choose the free one. You have to register and put up with a few more spam emails, but 'eh would you notice?

Any preferance on which of the two we use? They both have similer features so for me it's a coin flip. I would think more of you are already registered with Yahoo, so if you all want that it's fine with me.

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

Ok guys, Yahoo it is then.

I have created the InterGalactic Couch Potato Football League, or I.G.C.P.F.L. for short, on Yahoo. Here's the link to Yahoo fantasy football, "YAHOO!".

You should have an option to join a private league, and it will ask for the league ID, which is '226103', and the league password, which is 'se4rocks'.

Once you are in there is a league forum. So unless you have a problem actually joining the league, let's post our questions and suggestions there rather than clutter this thread up.

I have set the league up for 14 players. I can change that before we draft as low as 4 and as high as 20. So if the league is full let me know and I can make more room. The more the merrier.

I can also change league settings before we start so if you want to suggest changes to the setup, feel free. For the draft I chose "autopick" where you rank your players and then Yahoo does the draft based on that. They also have options for a live or offline draft if we want. I figured a live draft would be tough getting everybody together. I suppose we could do a slow offline draft via email or something if everybody wants to. Let me know.

I like either a thread draft (could be done here, or even at the site) or a live draft. I hate not being able to make quick decisions. If we do a thread or email draft, we need to set a time limit per pick.

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

Guys, I am all for having some kind of manual draft, but we have a bit of a time constraint here. The season starts Thursday sept 5th, fourteen days away. We are going to need a few more days to fill the league. Drafting 210 players via some kind of email or forum draft would be difficult. We'd have to average about a pick an hour, evey 24 hours, right up till kickoff. I am not sure that wouldn't be just as difficult as getting everybody together Online for a couple of hours between now and then to do it.

I am not saying no, but if we are going to pull it off we are going to have to get motivated, and maybe a little creative. Ideas?

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

Ok, here's an idea I had for a manual draft that may work. We get a Yahoo group set up for the draft. We work out a draft order, and we have a 14hr window each day to draft. Assuming everybody is in the continental US, that means we could run from 10AM to 12mid EST (7AM to 9PM PST).

We have two rounds a day for the first 6 rounds, and 3 rounds a day for the Last 9 rounds. That would give you a half an hour per pick at first, and 20 minutes later. We could do the draft in 6 days.

I would post the schedule, so you would know ahead of time what time you need to be on to make your pick. If you are late, you can still pick as soon as you can get Online, but you could lose the guy you want if somebody after you grabs him during their pick window.

Yahoo Groups can be setup to email every time someone makes a pick, but the email part is a little unreliable, so you should go Online to the group at your alloted time and make your pick.

I would also give anyone the option of making a "list pick" where they can list the next bunch of players they want. This way if you know you won't be able to get Online during your window you could make a list pick early and get the first player on your list that is still available when your window opens up. If you don't want to announce your strategy to the group you can just email it to me. I will promise not to base my own strategy on your picks. In fact you can send me the list as an attachment and I won't even open it until it is your time. This could be done for whoever gets the early morning draw. They could send me there picks the night before as I can be Online at that time.

Ok, that seems like a complicated scheme, but if you think about it it's pretty simple. Any opinions? I would be willing to set it up if you guys want.

Geo, the first rounds should go pretty dang fast...but if it's easiest to do an autopick, I'm all for it. Just be sure that everyone knows that it is imperative that they RANK THEIR PLAYERS! Otherwise, there will be some upset owners!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, I don't suppose. All we are doing is picking players that we think will do well in real life games and then we get points based on how they actually do. I guess you could draw names from a hat and have a chance at scoring as long as you start players that are actually in the NFL currently. The more you know about the various players the better you should do, but there is an element to luck involved.

I joined an NBA fantasay league once a few years ago despite not knowing a whit about the players beyond Michael Jordan, and he was retired at the time. I just stuck my nose in the various websites devoted to such topics and did the best I could.

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

I've played Fantasy Baseball, Football (American)and Basketball for a few years, and I would have to say that football is the one sport where luck is most involved -- QB goes down and the backup throws 3 TD passes, etc. Matchups (like what team is your main running back is playing against) determine a lot of the scoring, especially when picking which of your defensive teams to start (avoid anyone playing the Rams at all cost). Paying attention to which teams have the bye week is also important.

geoschmo August 20th, 2002 05:05 PM

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

That is true. A big part of the luck factor also has to do with the fact that most Fantasy Football leagues are head to head, and most other sports fantasy leagues are not. You can have the best team for the entire year and lose all your games cause the team you were playing each week happened to have their best week of the year when they played you.

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

Guys, we got ten players now. We are going with that. We had to go outside the SEIV group for the Last three. They are a couple of guys I work with and one of their friends. So if they act like they don't know what SEIV is, that's because they don't. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Also you amy want to keep serious league discussions out of here and in the league forum, since they don't come here.

I sent an email jsut now to everybody. Please respond to it and let me knwo that you got it at least. I am going to have to have good emails for all of you for the next couple weeks. I can keep them confidential, even form the other owners if you prefer, but I need a way to reach you.

Here's the email if you didn't get it. If you didn't let me know your email.

Quote:

Owners,

Welcome all! We have ten owners now, we're gonna stop there. I don't know what I was thinking but 14 was too many anyway.

We need to do two things now in short order cause the season will be starting before you know it. First of all, if you have any suggestions about scoring changes, post them in the league forum and we'll consider them and do them if there are no objections.

Secondly and more importantly, we need to get our teams drafted. Upon further review, I am not sure my grand idea for an email draft is practical. If everybody really wants to do that though I'd be willing to make a go of it. The worst that would happen I suppose is we would run out of time and have to let Yahoo autopick our teams. If we are going to do that I'd want to get started right away and so I need to make sure these are good emails for everybody. If you could reply to me just to tell me you got this message if nothing else.

We can also do a live draft over the course of a couple hours on Yahoo itself. They have an applet that allows this. If you are behind a firewall there may be problems though. If we do a live draft and some people can't make it they won't be totally screwed though because you can still rank your players and Yahoo will autopick them for people that don't show up. But if it's going to be half there and half not it's probably better just to do an autopick or email draft accross the board.

I selected a time for an autodaraft, we aren't stuck to it though. We can change to some other kind of draft. We can also try to get a different time, but the times are filling up fast, there aren't many left. They have a limited number of times for live drafts.

Anyway, the time I have selected is Tuesday Sug 27th at 1:00PM EST, 10:00AM PST. This would be during work for most people. I am thinking that would be the best time for everybody. Of course some people may not have internet access at work or can't do something like this while they are working. If that's the case we won't do the live draft. I don't think there is anyway we can get a time in the evening or early morning when everybody can get togehter at once. I have no problem nixing the live draft idea, I just picked that time because I had to pick a time before they were all gone.

So, let me know about the live draft idea. If you can do it a different time, or can't do it at all let me know. Also go to the football site and click the test system button to see if you can even do the live draft if we can get a time.

Again, I am thinking that the autopick or email draft is gonna be what we have to do. If we are going to do an email draft we need to get started soon, and go as quickly as possible. This will require people to give me a good strong email address where I can reach them, as well as times when they are available and a commitment frmo everybody to be availble during those times, and also a willingness to keep checking at pretty much all times until the draft is done.

Let's talk. You can email me, or post an opinion in the forum if you want to say something to everybody at large.

Re: Inter Galactic Couch Potato Football League Update!

I know you were all dying to find out how this turned out...

It's been a long season, and it's not over yet. One more weekend of games and then the playoofs begin. On tap this weekend really only one game matters. The Zanzibarbarians against the Kansas Trailblazers.

Everybody above us, the Tygornian Alliance, the Remorhaz Roughriders, and the Kodiak Express, have cliched a playoff spot. Everybody below us is just playing for respect. But for Zanzibar and Kansas the playoffs start a week early. Win and you are in, lose and you are out.

By all rights my Zanibarbarians should be eliminated already due to this 4 game funk my team is currently riding. A month ago I was 7 and 2 and vying for first place in the league. But a couple of key injuries and now my team is just fighting for survival.

But the tie Last week between Kansas and gridironguru has allowed me to retain control over my own destiny. If Kansas had scored one more point Last week I would be facing an impossible task of needing to beat Kansas by several hundred points to make the playoffs. If Gridironguru had scored one more point I would have the edge on Kansas, but would need a win against Kansas and to outscore Gridironguru in their game, or hope they lost. But all that is past now, all I can do is look to this week and try to get a team of players that are actually going to show up and play.

This is why I love fantasy football. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Wow, sounds like an interesting situation you all are in. I am in a league and I'm tied for first place with 2 others. We all stand at 9-4. I am in the playoffs for sure but I'm playing for first place now. I was in third place 3 weeks ago but I beat the number 1 team and the number 2 team lost as well. So I tied them. Then Last week I was tied for second, while the other second place player and the first place player fought it out. The second place player beat #1 and I won so we are all tied up. Should be an interesting week. I play one of the bottom teams in the league so I should finish at 10-4. Unless something bad happens of course.

AP - Zanzibar Stadium

It's not official yet until tommorow. But barring an unexpected scoring correction of some kind the Zanzibarbarians were victorious in a stunning come from behind win and clinched the Last open I.G.C.P.F.L. playoff spot.

The Trailblazers jumped out to an early lead on the strentgh of a big preformance from their star running back Priest Holmes (132yds, 2 TD), but a sub par day from Kansas QB Rich Gannon (328 yds, 0 TDs) kept it from being a complete blowout.

Stellar perfomances put in by the Zanzibarbarian defnsive unit (Saints, 4 turnovers and 2 blocked punts) and Zanzibar running back Duece Mcallister (127 Yds, 3TD) in the afternoon games brought the game within reach. Things still looked bad through three quarters of Sunday nights game with the Zanzibars still down by several points and QB Brett Favre struggling to find a rythm. Favre pulled it off though and a stunning fourth quarter drive capped off by a 40 yard touchdown pass made the difference. The 8 point play put the Zanzibarbarians ahead for the first time in the game. The final score was 103 to 99.

In such a close game of course every point counts. The Zanzibars were helped greatly by Running Back Maurice Shipp and Wide Receiver Tai Streets who were both picked off waivers late in the season, Streets just this week, to fill the holes created by the rash of injuries that has befallen the Zanzibars lately.

These injuries have been the greatest factor contributing to the teams four game losing streak that was snapped Last night. The team hopes to get Marshall Faulk back and healthy for the playoffs next week.

How did the first round of playoffs go?
I lost my game, my QB did hardly anything this week. It sucked big time. So now if I win this week I am the 3rd place winner, if I lose 4th. If I would have won this week I could have made it to the championship game, but that didn't happen. But anyways, how is this league doing?
