Zero Population Growth - Fact or Fiction?

Does anybody know a way to have a race with Zero Population growth?

My thought is to have a race with just a population of 1 on the homeworld. at zero growth there should be no way to colonize! Great for that super-advanced relic race.

lower your happyness, environmental resistance, and reproduction as far as they will go. if that does not do it, nothing will, short of modding the game.

if you are going to mod the game, you might as well just take away their access to colonization technology (by putting a prerequisite on it, and giving everyone else the racial technology that grants colonization) like in p&n.

Lowering happiness that much will make them riot.

You can do it, I have. Lower the reproduction all the way and lower enviromental tolerence the same. The *might* be able to reproduce if they are jublient and on a good planet though.

Even 0 reproduction races can colonize; they just can't replace lost population.

Except with Replicant Centers. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I played a full tech 5000 racial point game.
I set reproduction down as far as it would go so I could spend the points elsewhere.
Without the organic tech facilities, I would have had no pop growth. I could still colonize.

You can also capture alien population...

Good for roleplaying the Borg http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

(Well, to be fair, when they were first encountered they did have those reploid vats, but later on they seemingly lost the ability to reproduce on their own and could only expand through assimilation, as Seven of Nine said.)

lamely, after the borg got all cheesed out and poopey, i think they retroactively explaind that as NOT borg spawning chambers, but where they stick the infants they assimilate.

whatever.

I thought about making a multiplayer game once where everybody had zero population growth, just to see how differently people would play.

Wow! I didn't realize you could bring Population growth down to zero. I think I will incorperate that in my game. Would require players to really keep track of their population and strive for jubilence otherwise you population will be limited. Also, with this implemented, a race could theorectically be eliminated in population yet some of its technology be still around.

LOL... "a long time ago, a race long dead occupied these cities". I love this game!

Hmm... with trade, remote mining, and/or mod techniques, an empire could go about its business even without any population. It just wouldn't be able to build things on planets.

PvK: Who said anything about having 0 population? We're talking about 0 population growth here. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Do mineral miners and the like work on a planet with zero population?

I don't THINK so... or maybe I'm thinking of building things...

No, they don't. Planets with 0 pop can't do anything except exist. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Same with Rioting planets.

And properly they should not work the same with 1 million as with 100 million population. I wish MM would restore the 'population required to operate a facility' option. If you have less than the min per facility then your facilities should operate at a fraction of their normal capaccity -- equal to the fraction of required population present, of course.

I don't know, I sort of think the Proportions type mods do a pretty good job of elevating the importance of populations.

PvK August 22nd, 2002 02:58 AM

Re: Zero Population Growth - Fact or Fiction?

Ya, Proportions shows how you can have population have a major effect on production. In fact, if you don't want so slow a game, you could just lift the Proportions population curve and nothing else.

It won't effect things like a shrine, scanner, or robot factory, but then again, why should they? What facility actually would require even one million high-tech inhabitants to run it, short of a city...

As for planets doing NOTHING without population - not quite true. Resupply depots and component repair still take place with zero population, and I imagine everything besides construction and production do, as well.

PvK, that falls under the "existing" Category. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I probably should have worded that better.
