OT: Star Ships Unlimited

I downloaded the demo for this game Last night. I found it to be a tad out dated, but never the less interesting.

Have any of you played this game, and if so, what were your impressions?

Atrocities:

I am tired of your treasoness ways. Every day you post a link to some other space/empire game. What about us, huh? The SE:IV loyalists? Must we see our game's honour tarnished by your ambition to play more than one computer game?

I say:
Off with his head!

You misunderstand my intentions. I merely am attempting to point out these inferior games in hopes of saving loyal SEIV players from becoming victims of their lethargic game play.

Hmm, I like that Communications thing.

Maybe that way we can get the neutrals to stop firing on our ships!

Re: OT: Star Ships Unlimited

I bought the full Version of the game just before I found out about SEIV. Gotta say that I liked it. It has a nice progression of tech and the gameplay was pretty fluid. I found that the orders system was quite nice and cut down a lot of the micro-management (which can be a pain in a real time game).

The thing that I liked the best though was the way that the weapon systems were handled. Each had its own design characteristics, firing arcs, etc., and this made the choice of what weapons you would equip more interesting than just going for the highest damage.

I also enjoyed how they handled weapon research, with every weapon system after the first incurring an additional 50% research penalty. This forced you to specialize instead of the usual tactic of grabbing the best of everything. This tended to give each race its own distinct fleet.

On the down side, it was shareware and so the gameplay was rather limited (you can only conquor the galaxy so many times with the same, somewhat limited, set of tech). I heard that they were coming out a new Version that was going to be comercially published. I haven't looked in on it since SEIVGold came out but I wouldn't mind seeing how it is with a little more polish.

Just picked this game up over the weekend. Looks interesting, but I had to wait to get to work to print out the manual (I hate those pdf manuals). So hopefully I'll get the chance to read it and try this game out. Has anyone played since the previous Posts, and do you have any hints, tips or cheats?

I played it a long while back. it looks neat, but i found the interface rather non-intuitive. I could design ships and build them, but I was never quite sure if i was doing reasearch properly, or how planetary colonization and development was supposed to work.

I felt like I was just ordering a handfull of ships around the map to 'run over' various icons to collect them, and to shoot at bad things. It seemed like it would be fun if i could figure out the more advanced features, but not fun enough to be worth putting the effort into.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, I did have to do a search on it. I could have started an original thread, but I figured WTH, I'll bump this one up and see if I get any responses.

Narf, I did try to play without reading the manual, but I couldn't figure what the heck I was doing. So I printed the manual out today, and hopefully will get a clue as to what I'm supposed to be doing. I don't even know if there's a tutorial on this game or not.

Yeah, I hardly ever read the manual to play a game. When I come home with a new game I just bought, I'm so eager to play that I don't want to waste time reading. I just start doing stuff, and I only reluctantly go to the manual if I'm stuck and I'm forced to admit that I have no clue how to play. Then I just read the bare minimum to figure out how to get to the next step, and then immediately go back to the game and start doing more stuff.

Once I'm more or less familiar with how to play, then I actually feel like going through the entire manual and reading up on things I may have missed.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Oh, yes, that game. I bought it a year ago and tried it. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to order one of my starships to attack another starship. STUNII was quickly retired in favor of SEIVG.

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Well, I'm usually that way too. But when you don't have a manual in your hand to refer to, but instead have one on the disk that you're supposed to print out, that's what really irks me. So I printed out the manual yesterday in the hope that it will help me figure this game out. Unfortunately, I just didn't get the chance to read it or try the game again. And with 24 on tonight, I may not get to it again until Wednesday.

Heh. I had and played that game for a short while Last year or something. It had its good points but not the long term playability of SE4.

I liked the weapon arcs system best I think. Maybe that could be borrowed for SE4 combat systems. Give weapons that otherwise might not be used superior weapon arcs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Does it have any multiplayer capabilities?

Hot-Seat? Network? PBEM?

Cyrien January 15th, 2004 04:30 AM

Re: OT: Star Ships Unlimited

Not hot-seat being realtimeish. I think it has some network play or somesuch. Not sure. I never played it MP. Maybe that is one of the reasons it didn't Last for me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
