Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

I changed the cookie policy on my computer to allow only first party cookies and disallow third-party cookies.

Then I wiped out all my cookies. : (

Then I found I couldn't participate "actively" in this site.

So, I registered again as "Maestro" with a new e-mail address, but I want my old name back! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

What is wierd is that my displayed name is tbontob.

Can anyone help me?

tbontob

P.S. Or am I doomed to die an ignominious death. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

P.P.S. Without anyone to mourn my passing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

P.P.P.S. Or to celebrate my demise with a e-mail of good-riddence! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

A more effective way to block unwanted cookies might be to get a software firewall that has the ability to do so.

Re: Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

Hi Fyron http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Actually, I do have a firewall to prevent unwanted cookies in addition to IE6

The system I have in place now is:

A) Through Internet Explorer 6:

1) Third party cookies are blocked! This means I do not get advertisers cookies etc.
2) First party cookies that are required for the functionality of the website are permitted.

B) Then my firewall (Norton Internet Security)screens the First party cookies.

I think this will work well. Anyone have any better ideas? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Edited for grammer! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Norton Personal Firewall allows me to decide whether to allow every cookie that appears or to block them. I can do it on a case by case basis, or I can always allow (or block) a particular cookie (such as the Shrapnal forums cookie).

Yes...

But what I like about my system is that I have fewer cookies to consider whether to block or not. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Third party cookies are automatically eliminated!

Yes, I just love the ad-blocking.

I am on high speed cable, so time to download is not much of a factor.

What I really, really do like is I am no longer bombarded with those g..d...d ads! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Ads don't bug me too much- even pop ups.

What drives me crazy is ads that when you kill them, ANOTHER pops up- ussually more than one. Or worse, ads with sound. Invarible really aggravating sound.

Next to the ones that spawn on their death are the ones that run around your screen and don't stop for a while so it takes you at least 5 seconds before you can kill it. My pop-up stopper isn't blocking all the ads anymore though, a few get through every once in a while, whys that?

I am surprised no one has asked how I can block third party cookies in Internet Explorer 6! It is somewhat obscure and not readily apparent from the menu.

For those who may want to know:
1) Select Tools/Internet Options from IE6
2) Select Privacy
3) Click the Advanced Button
4) Check "Override automatic cookie handling"
5) Under "First Party Cookies", click "Accept"
6) Under "Third Party Cookies", click "Block"
7) Click "OK" twice

Edit: This may also be available with earlier Versions of Internet Explorer. My experience is only with IE6.

The only problem is that you relinquish any control over First Party Cookies. It would be nice if IE would allow us to block third party cookies and still screen first party cookies. But, this is not the case.

Generally it is not a problem as most sites behave properly and use cookies for which they were designed (to personalize the web page to your needs). However, some sites go further and gather unauthorized information on you and thereby create a potential security hazard.

So, if you use IE to block third party cookies, you really should have a firewall which allows you to screen first party cookies.

Hope this clarifies matters. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

5) Under "First Party Cookies", click "Accept"

I simply used "prompt" instead of
"accept".

But some of us can be lazy creatures. The potential is there to just automatically accept the cookie whenever we see the prompt.

My feeling is if "prompt" is used, the user should have a clear modus operandi which is followed religiously.

Here is a possible one.

1) If the site is likely to be a responsible one such as Microsoft, allowing the cookie should be no problem as these companies do not "need" money and generally want to avoid the embarrassement of being accused of behaving unethically.
2) If the site is over the borderline of "safe", try rejecting the cookie.
3) If the site requires you take a cookie, you have a decision to make whether to accept it or not and the attendant risks associated with such acceptance.

I remember being able to prompt for cookies way back in the IE3 days, and I believe the distinction between first party and third party was made with IE5.
But, my personal method adds something more... I forget what exactly is the name of the dialogue, but the Last tab is entitled "Paranoia"... with subsections named something like "Things That Happen Behind Your Back". Quite useful http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

Maybe, I should have mentioned this earlier.

The automatic screening of cookies by IE6 and some firewalls is dependant upon P3P (Platform for Privacy Preferences).

Typically, a web site fills out a multiple-choice form about the information the web site collects. Then it is is coded into their web page. The privacy level selected in IE and/or firewall is then compared to the coded tag on the webpage and either the cookie is accepted or a privacy warning is issued to the viewer.

But it does have some weaknesses.
1) It is voluntary and
2) The information is not verified by any agency.

==============================================

Somewhat off-topic, some sites drop additional programs when we download files. These hog memory, disk space and processing power.

These programs are not considered viruses since they do no damage to your computer. Yet, they can slow your computer to a crawl, hog memory so that some programs will no longer load and use up valuable hard drive space.

For those who haven't done so, I would strongly suggest using Ad-aware found at www.lavasoftusa.com.

There are other sites (I think the home site is in Germany at www.lavasoft.de).

It is free and comes in many Languages.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. I run it every month to clean up my computer.

EDIT For the first time user, do not be surprised if you have a lot of these programs to delete... a 100 is not unusual. I have heard of over 800! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif It is safe and reliable.

EDIT And it is very easy to use http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yes, I agree whole heartedly with tbontob. Adaware is a great program. I use it alot and it helps keep my computer running at peak efficiancy. A friend of mine who is a computer technician introduced me to this program and we ran it on my mothers computer. It turned up around 500 or so. we cleaned them up and her computer runs alot better now.
So I, along with tbontob, strongly recommend using that program.

I have a question:

I'm using IE6 and I have a couple of web addresses that are permanently affixed in the address history when autocomplete is on for months now, regardless of how many times I've cleared files, history and cookies etc...what the hell is up with that? How did I banish them for good!?

Cookies won't do it, but clearing history, close the browser, then reopen it works for me.

Captn Kwok

I found this under the help nenu...
=================================
To delete Autocomplete entries from the Address bar list

The AutoComplete feature saves previous entries you've made for Web addresses, forms, and passwords. To delete entries from the Address bar, you must clear your History folder. You cannot clear individual entries from the list of saved entries.

On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options.
Click the General tab.
Under History, click Clear History.
Notes

When typing information in Web forms, and typing passwords, you can remove an item from the list of suggestions by clicking the item and then pressing the DELETE key.
For Help on an item, click at the top of the dialog box, and then click the item.

Re: Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

No, I don't think you understand.

It is not the normal clear history, autocomplete, etc, thing - I've tried a gazillion times and that doesn't work. They have been around for months now and won't leave.

They don't show up after I've cleared the history etc, until I type "http://www.c " then it autocompletes with "http://www.cbs/primetime/bigbrother" when it shouldn't since the history file is empty.

Re: Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

Bah! The features of the relatively new Mozilla sound much more useful in controlling spam and popups than any of the other big names. Consider switching to that, especially since it's controlled by normal USERS, not Yet Another Corporate Big Brother who will not dare to put features into a web browser that would really hinder advertising or consumer 'profiling' (and tick off their buddies in the Other Corporate Big Brother entities...)

But failing that (and I admit that I'm still using IE 5.5 even though Mozilla sounds cool -- it's hard to switch from one major program to another...) I recommend PROXOMITRON to stop popups and lots of other dreck that you don't want interrupting your browsing sessions. It's a completely configurable and FREE local proxy that you can get from numerous locations and it has a dedicated Yahoo group where experts continually talk about the latest tricks used by sleazy website operators to get around filters, and they post updated filters to counter them! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Proxomitron is really a very powerful little program, with a complete pattern matching language that lets you do lots of fancy custom things. Incoming or outgoing HTML and Java can be inspected and changed 'in transit' to kill snooping or customize the look of every page to your liking. Cookies can be intercepted or modified in transit (in or out!) too. You can spoof your browser ID, your OS, any cookie contents you wish, and lots of other good stuff. You can give it lists of sites to 'turn off' or 'turn on' certain filters with, as well, so it can be completely customized to your own browsing habits. Since so many SE IV Users are more dedicated to modding than playing, I'm sure many of you will also like programming Proxomitron to counter website weenies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Help! How do I get my name back? -> Firewalls -> Ad blockers

Hello Baron http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

My only real issue with the "new" programs is the potential conflict with my system. Often they are buggy. Often there is little in the way of instructions. If a problem develops, there may not be a manual to refer to.

"The Big Name" software certainly have their deficiencies, but generally they have instructions, a manual explaining their software, and "usually" have fairly good support.

However, if a "secure and independant source of information" such as PC Magazine or Dotto's Data Cafe (TV program) recommends the software, my ears pick up and I will often try it.

An example is Ad-aware! It was recommended by both the the above-named information sources. I tried it and found it to be exceptional and met the praises they lavished on it.

These recommendations and my own personal experience with the software meant that I have no qualms about recommending it to others.

And the fact that it is free is a bonus! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
