Acronym Dictionary
Just now, I must have read at least 100 Messages before I understood what SDD stood for. Only then was I really able to understand what was being discussed in a very complex discussion.
So, I propose we start a Acronym Dictionary. I have started with a few that come to mind (including SDD http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ). There must be dozens, if not hundreds more. I think the format is pretty self-explanatory. Any improvements are welcomed. Feel free to enter any acroyms you know of. Or if you do not know the meaning of one, post it, as I am sure someone will know what it stands for. ============================================== AAAAAAAAAA APB = Anti-Proton Beam, Weapon AS = Allegiance Subverter, Weapon BBBBBBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC CSM = Capital Ship Missile, Weapon CV = Computer Virus, Weapon DDDDDDDDDD DUC = Depleted Uranium Cannon, Weapon EEEEEEEEEE FFFFFFFFFF GGGGGGGGGG HHHHHHHHHH IIIIIIIIII JJJJJJJJJJ KKKKKKKKKK LLLLLLLLLL MMMMMMMMMM NNNNNNNNNN OOOOOOOOOO PPPPPPPPPP PDC = Point Defense Cannon, Weapon PPB = Phased-Polaron Beam, Weapon QQQQQQQQQQ RRRRRRRRRR SSSSSSSSSS SDD = Self-Destruct Device, Weapon TTTTTTTTTT UUUUUUUUUU VVVVVVVVVV WWWWWWWWWW XXXYYYZZZZ |
Re: Acronym Dictionary
You should just add the initails of every component/facility ect; they're all likely to be used as aconyms unless there are repetitions.

I usually refer to a Self Destruct Device as SSD for some reason. Maybe for "Ship Self Destruct"... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: Acronym Dictionary
Some weapons and such don't get refered to as acronyms; I've never seen someone say QT for a Quantum Torpedo, for example, or any abreviation for an incinerator beam. I HAVE seen the following:
WWWWWWW WMG- Wave-Motion Gun, weapon WP- Warp Point (also Weapon Platform, ussually obvious by context) HHHHH HW- Homeworld, planet type Phoenix-D |
Re: Acronym Dictionary

He also points out (with justification) that the same acronym can apply to two different names. Even so, I would suggest it is still an immeasureable help to the newbie who should be able to decide to which one it applicable to (as Phoenix-D suggests from the context). Hmmm...
Some of the responses are interesting.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I started this thread with the idea of dealing with Acronyms for the standard SE4 game. So, what do I do with BOHICA? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Also, some of the Acronyms are for the "advanced" player...such as mods. So, for the moment, I thought I would put the "non-standard" SE4 stuff into **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** and deal with it later. The **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** will be in alphabetical order, so it should be relatively easy for the experienced player to find what he wants. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif If someone does know of a better way of doing this, I would like to hear it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Here's the up to date listing... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ====================================== AAAAAAAAAA AI = Artificial Intelligence, Computer Player APB = Anti-Proton Beam, Weapon AS = Allegiance Subverter, Weapon BBBBBBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC CA = Crystalline Armor, Component CSM = Capital Ship Missile, Weapon CV = Computer Virus, Weapon DDDDDDDDDD DUC = Depleted Uranium Cannon, Weapon EEEEEEEEEE FFFFFFFFFF GGGGGGGGGG HHHHHHHHHH HW = Homeworld, Planet type IIIIIIIIII JJJJJJJJJJ KKKKKKKKKK LLLLLLLLLL MMMMMMMMMM MB = Meson BLaster, Weapon MM = Malfador Machinations, Creator of SE4 NNNNNNNNNN OOOOOOOOOO OA = Organic Armour, Component PPPPPPPPPP PBW = Play By Web, Game Mode PDC = Point Defense Cannon, Weapon PPB = Phased-Polaron Beam, Weapon QQQQQQQQQQ QR = Quantum Reactor, Component RRRRRRRRRR SSSSSSSSSS SDD = Self-Destruct Device, Weapon SY = Space Yard, TTTTTTTTTT TDB = Time Distortion Burst, Weapon UUUUUUUUUU VVVVVVVVVV vsAI = Solo Game vs Computer, Game Mode WWWWWWWWWW WMG = Wave-Motion Gun, Weapon WP = Warp Point, Location, WP = Weapon Platform, Hull XXXYYYZZZZ **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** BOHICA = Bend Over, Here It Comes Again DNM = Devnull Mod FQM = Fyron's Quadrant Mod P&N = Pirates & Nomads mod QNP = Quasi-Newtonian Propulsion ST = Star Trek SW = Star Wars TDM - Tamper-Daynar-Mephisto mod =============================== Edited to include Space Yard which was omitted. But just in case you are serious http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ...how does "Fluffy Bunny Waitress" fit in? Like, BOHICA seems to have some relevance in the sense that a player gets hit with one whammy and then... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif Also, I have the highest regard for the people you mentioned. Whenever they post something, I make sure that I read it. Yet, I am wondering if we are going off topic here. If the consensus is to include these individuals as acronyms, it can be done. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: Acronym Dictionary
Sorry, I was being a bit facetious. you'd know all about FBWs if you ever stopped in at the cantina.
Actually, your dictionary got me thinking about an idea I had a while ago. I was considering some sort of "forum encyclopedia" in which we record all the knowledge, lore and "history" of the forum. Things we've discussed (Sweet Tea, SEIV light-speed, SEIV is like sex because...) , characters and events we've created (All the stuff that happens in the Cantina, basically), prestigious threads (ie "pirate's life" and "how old are you") and other things like that. Not sure why anyone would do all this (other than to satisfy my own sad, obsessive vanities) but it could be a laugh. But yeah, I'm way OT. I'll shut up now. Heh, there's another acronym for you: OT. OK. Shutting up... ...now... ... |

Re: Acronym Dictionary
Why stop with a Forum encyclopedia? Make it a Space Empires Encylclopedia. A complete referance with everything to newbie help and game strategy tips, to explanations of the stuff that goes on in the forum on a regular basis.
My suggestion for a name would be the Encyclopedia Malfadorica. Ok, I gave it a name. Now who wants to do the easy part and throw the thing together. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |

Re: Acronym Dictionary
Well, I have the new listing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
It is growing like Topsy. As such, it may lose some of it's relevance unless we make a decision as to its purpose. So, is the purpose of this dictionary is to be: 1) Common everyday usage? In this case we can turf over 20 MM acronyms. 2) Common everyday usage and MM acronyms? I included the MM acronyms in the listing. It will be easy to remove some of them if we wish. I didn’t include stuff like IANAL, PITA, and Star Trek/Deep Space Nine/Voyager/The Next Generation as IMHO they are peripheral acronyms and not germane to the task of providing useful and meaningful acronyms to most SE4 Users. However, I have no intention of being heavy handed about this. If the consensus is to include one or more of the excluded items, I have no problem in doing so. Here’s the new up-to-date listing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ===================================== AI = Artificial Intelligence, Computer Player APB = Anti-Proton Beam, Weapon APLU = After Last Player Upload AS = Allegiance Subverter, Weapon B = Bridge, Component BA = Baseship, Hull BB = Battleship, Hull BC = BattleCrusier, Hull BS = Battle Station, Hull CA = Crystalline Armor, Component CC = Cruiser, Hull CL = Colony Ship, Hull CQ = Crew Quarters, Component CR = Cruiser, Hull CSM = Capital Ship Missile, Weapon CX = Carrier, Hull (or CV) CV = Computer Virus, Weapon DS = Destroyer, Hull (or DD) DN = Dreadnaught, Hull DUC = Depleted Uranium Cannon, Weapon ES = Escort, Hull FG = Frigate, Hull (or FF) FL = Large Fighter, Hull FM = Medium Fighter, Hull FS = Small Fighter, Hull GGGGGGGGGG HW = Homeworld, Planet type HX = Heavy Carrier, Hull IIIIIIIIII JJJJJJJJJJ KKKKKKKKKK LC = Light Cruiser, Hull LM = Large Mines, Hull LS = Life Support, Component LT = Large Transport, Hull LX = Light Carrier, Hull MB = Meson BLaster, Weapon MC = Master Computer, Component MM = Malfador Machinations, Creator of SE4 MM = Medium Mines, Hull MT = Medium Transport, Hull NSP = Null-Space Projector, Weapon OA = Organic Armour, Component PBEM = Play By Email PBW = Play By Web, Game Mode PDC = Point Defense Cannon, Weapon PPB = Phased-Polaron Beam, Weapon QR = Quantum Reactor, Component RL = Large Drone, Hull RM = Medium Drone, Hull RS = Small Drone, Hull RW = Ringworld, Hull SB = Starbase, Hull SDD = Self-Destruct Device, Weapon SL = Large Satellite, Hull SM = Medium Satellite, Hull SM = Small Mines, Hull SS = Small Satellite, Hull SS = Space Station, Hull ST = Small Transport, Hull SW = Sphereworld, Hull SY = Space Yard, Facility TDB = Time Distortion Burst, Weapon TL = Large Troops, Hull TM = Medium Troops, Hull TS = Small Troops, Hull UUUUUUUUUU vsAI = Solo Game vs Computer, Game Mode WL = Large Weapon Platform, Hull WM = Medium Weapon Platform, Hull WMG = Wave-Motion Gun, Weapon WP = Warp Point, Location, WP = Weapon Platform, Hull WS = Small Weapon Platform, Hull XXXYYYZZZZ **FUN STUFF AND NOT SO FUN STUFF** BOHICA = Bend Over, Here It Comes Again DNM = Devnull Mod FQM = Fyron's Quadrant Mod P&N = Pirates & Nomads mod QNP = Quasi-Newtonian Propulsion ST = Star Trek SW = Star Wars TDM = Tamper-Gamer-Daynar-Mephisto mod |

I very much appreciate the offer to help, although I am not sure what you are offering. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I am managing the data on a spreadsheet now. The spreadsheet makes the data relatively easy to handle and sort. The hard part is deciding what data is meaningful to the readers of this dictionary. For myself, I would like a dictionary of the most common Acronym usage. With this view, some of the MM definitions would be excluded. But maybe the majority want something different. In such a case, my view should not prevail. To determine this question, I think I am going to have to take a poll. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Question is "Can I take a poll within this thread or must I start a new thread?" |

Re: Acronym Dictionary
The purpose of my offer to put it in a spread sheet was for exactly what you did. A tab delimited file is a text file that most Word Processors, Spread Sheet, and Database programs can import. A separate file would be good to have for people who are reading a thread, run into a Acronym and need to bring up the list. I read the forums with a database open designed to take notes on various aspects of the game.
Most likely it is over kill. Perhaps the Newbie Guide, Acronym List and others should be merged into the "Encyclopedia Malfadorica” |
