Special damage on troops

Been playing a SP game recently as a crystallurgy race and became curious - do weapons of type "skips shields" and "skips armor" affect anything on ground combat?

on the topic, do ECM and Sensors affect ground combat?

AFAIK, those abilities don't do anything with troops. All of the hit points of all the components are added up, as are the shields, to get 1 HP value, which is just treated as the basic structure of the unit.

ECM and Combat Sensors do have an effect. But, only the highest bonus out of all the troops in one army is used, for all of them. So, if you have 100 troops without ECM and CS, 1 troop with them gives the bonus to the whole stack.

No, to the best of my knowledge, "skip shields" and "skip armor" have no bearing on ground combat -- nor on combat with fighters, satellites, nor weapons platforms. UNITS don't track damage by component; untilt he very Last HP of the unit is gone, all components will continue to function at 100%.

Troops, of course ... are units. Think about it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Er, Last I checked, skip shields and skip armor did work in combat against fighters, satellites, and weapon platforms. Religious Talisman + Null Space Projectors = Hot Tasty Death vs. Units, since shields and armor are bypassed. Yes, you still have to do the damage to the armor to destroy it, but that makes little difference. The big difference is that the shields are bypassed, and IIRC, those are calculated per unit in space combat. Since it doesn't matter how many shield points you have when your HP drop to <= 0, they are bypassable. If everything functions until the Last bit of damage is taken to the HP, then it would seem that armor becomes much more useful in certain situations though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

What effect does troop ECM/Sensor have on the combat then?
And yes, everything works on fighters/sats/WPs.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">WOW! Very usefull information. How did you figure this out? One of my beefs with SE4 is that you get so little info in the ground combat results so it is very hard to assess how god your designs are.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Test it out. Run a bunch of mock battles, with different types of components.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">IIRC, no special abilities like that work on troops.

Re: Special damage on troops

One thing i usually do is create a "commander" troop with a bunch of sheilds and all the special components on him and build one and put him after the sheild troops.

basically troops are dropped in order if you haven't already noticed, so put super buff ones with few weapons first and then heavy weaposn with few sheild/armor 2nd and you will do much better damage I think.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The only problem is, you don't skip the armor -- the armor HP are added directly into the total for the unit. Ergo, at the very least, armor skipping has absolutely no benefit against UNITS.

Remember, units do NOt track damage per component. All or nothing.
