Any One Here Still Play
Does any one here still play BOTF, Rebellion, MOO2, etc?
I am playing a game of BOTF right now. I forgot how much fun the game really was. Very enjoyable. A tad bit in micromanagement though, but otherwise very nice diVersion for now. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I play BOTF occasionally. The AIs are too boring in MOO2 for me, so I don't play it anymore. I don't have Rebellion.
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
How could you be unfaithful to SE4? I haven't seriously played any other game in about 2 years now. (Although I am considering buying a PS2 just so I can own SSX Tricky=-)
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I have, and play MOO2. Waiting for MOO3. I do not have any of the others. OH, WHOO is me!!

Re: Any One Here Still Play
The only other 4X title I've played this year was Reach for the Stars. The year(s) before that included Master of Orion (1), and Star Wars Rebellion. None of those are still on the HD.
Besides SE IV, I still have Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire, and Civilization II on the HD, and have also played King of Dragon Pass relatively recently. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
...Hmmm, well I have Civ III, Moo2, and AOW 2 in turnbased. And Morrowind and Virtual Pool 3 in Other Category. Looking forward to Moo3 and the Morrowind Addon. Morrowind and AOW2 HAVE cut into my playing time for SEIV recently...

Re: Any One Here Still Play
I have (but haven't played in a while) MOO2, am waiting for MOO3 (asked my mom for it for Christmas - now I have to wait 7 weeks instead of 3! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif but hey I save $50 if she actually gets it for me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif .. though I might end up buying 2 more copies, one for my brothers (I have my own computer) and one for my "girlfriend" (don't know if we're actually at that point in the relationship yet...)), and I downloaded MOO1 (hey, they talk about it all the time on the Infogrames forums and no one's shut the threads down!) but the sound doesn't work (even with VDM-Sound!) so I haven't played it much (wanted to hear the old music!!!)... Played the demo of Stars! and wanted more but never bought the full Version, though moddability would be nice... will they EVER release Supernova?!? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon8.gif Dammit, just give it to Shrapnel and at least you'll get SOME sales! You'll never sell any if you just hold out for a "major" publisher! I'm sure Shrapnel would take it even though they have a 4X already - they have both Runesword and Dungeon Odyssey!
Anyway, done ranting about Stars! for now... maybe I will go out and buy the original if it's not still too expensive (see my shareware rant http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )... those are the games I've been playing... so even though I've listed a bunch, I haven't really played any of them lately. Oh yeah, Starfleet Command, but that's not 4X, it's RTS - but hey, it's sci-fi! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Just started a game of BOTF a couple of nights ago. Still enjoy it. Never did get a copy of rebellion. Can't find it now. I do want to get a copy of it though.
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I liked moo2, though it was a lot easier (and less fun) than Se IV.
I found RFS to be pretty annoying in almost all ways (SE has ruiuned me). There was another couple of games I played - Imperium Galactica and Pax Imperium. Those were both fun solid SE IV type games and will occasional replay them. The Civs are always fun. Did any of y'all play MAX or MAX II? |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
After discovering PBW when I am not doing a turn I spend my game time thinking up new tactics. Tried civ III, but no AI matches playing against a real person.
BTW What's BOTF? |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I gave up on BOTF (Bored Of The Federation: Star Trek Infrastructure).
It just wasn't my thing. I get my Micro Management kicks at work. A lot of the 4X games don't have stress events often enough. It all seems like a big MM set piece that ends with an overwhelming victory. I have been playing MOO 1. Now that game allows for frequent action without killing resource growth. SEIV also flows like that. I have been playing STARS! multiplayer also. It can have some frequent stress points, but.... building and playing with your toys will really put your economy behind. |

i still play moo2 on occasion. i used the racial pick editor and the race editor to increase the abilies of the other races. i also play Stars from time to time. havent play imperium galactica latley but it was fun.
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
A couple of you mentioned Civ III. Does anyone have the expansion pack, multi-player, Civ III: Play the World?? I would be interested, as I haven't got it yet!
VAL, yeah I use to play both MAX I & MAX II. Sure are sorry they stopped supporting it. Might still be playing it!! mlmbd http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I still think that BotF was one of those potential blockbuster games that was just too buggy to Last. I was heavily involved in many of the early modding of that game, and modified a lot of textures for the ships using textures 'ripped' from other games. Unfortunately, the memory leak wrecked the game.
There are still some BotF Groups out there, working on mods, but their updates are far and few in between. For me to buy Civ 3 PTW is contingent on wether or not some of the late game lagging has been dealt with. It really blew to be using a high end machine, and having the game take a few minutes to process the turn of just a few AI. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Still have and play at times MOO2 and Pax Imperia and Imperium Galactica II. I still have BOTF but it would crash after awhile (memory leak?). Decent game but just a bit too buggy IMHO.
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I was looking at Civ III, but want to wait until I get my cable line put in before I even think about that one http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
I thought Imperium Galactica II was no where near as much fun as the first one - though I liked the sorta Vorlonesque race. I had heard Pax Imperium came out with a sequel, but never saw it. Anyone? |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Civ 3 is nothing compared to Civ 2. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
3X Games I played except SEIV was Call to Power 2 and GalCiv Beta. I wait for MOO3 and Supenova (if it will ever be released).
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Avoid Civ 3. I posted a very negative post about it here a year ago. The game just wasn't well thought out or fun. The AI can use a musketman to defeat a tank. Nuff said.
How the game achieved so many positive reviews is amazing, and a clear indication of how money does promote positive results amoung bought off reviewers. (adds pay the way to good reviews.) |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
When I played MOO2 for the first time, it was a Friday night. I started a game and played for a while and ask my roommate at the time what time it was and he said that is was Sunday.
It is still one of my favorite games to play. I have also played BOTF, CivNet, Civ2, Civ3, Alpha Centauri (& Alien Crossfire), Imperium Galatica, MAX & MAX 2 (the graphics in 2 are great, but the balance and gameplay of 1 is better). I did like Stars! and I am waiting on the next Version. An old DOS (will run in Win95/98 (not sure about 2K or XP)) game called Conquest of the New World (Exploring the land and discovering things on the land including rivers, forests, mountain, etc. ) is very enjoyable to play. I do play other genres too. I have played the original Wolfenstein series, the Doom series, the Quake series, the Half-Life series, and even Duke Nuke'm. And I have even played the Unreal series as well. I have enjoyed playing SEIV Gold and I hope that it will continue to grow (map size too). KirbyEF |

Val: Actually I guess I played the sequel (Pax Imperia: Imminent Domain). A bit more linear in a way than MOO2 or SEIV. I still would play it for hours (days). It is what got me hooked on this genre of game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I have already set it to 255.....
Let's just say space is big and an unsigned byte variable seems small to me (an unsigned integer or higher (millions) would be good). Galaxies..... not just one.... which is a problem in other games as well (MOO2, et. alt.) KirbyEF |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
If you use Fyrons Q-mod, set to 255, you could get 10 X more planets to play with.
|
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Noted - I will stay away from Civ III http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Pax Imperium : Eminent Domain was no where near as much fun as the original, try to track it down, should be cheap http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif How is Dungeon Odyssey ? |

Re: Any One Here Still Play
Let me see... how many games have been mentioned... if I miss a few it's because I didn't write them down, or never played them and don't have an educated opinion.
Civ2 - I swear, this game is one of the BEST games ever created in the history of computer gaming. Everything is perfect, everything is balanced, my only ***** about it is that they use settlers to do terrain improvements. Civ3 - This game was a big disappointment. The units are unbalanced to say the least, it still uses settler type units to mess with terrain and the Strategic Resources, while an interesting idea, are poorly done. No matter how large I am, the new resources alway show up in someone else's territory. Alpha Centauri - This is another good game. My favorite thing is to go as the Giains and then just use mind boils to kick the living daylights of all the other factions. At the end of the game when the fungus is blowing up in ten places every turn, destroying all my improvements, I'm even better off then before! Still need to use settler type units for terrain though. It maddens me no end. What would I use instead of settlers? Good question, glad you asked. I like what Call To Power did. Every turn a certain percentage of total empire production went into a 'Public Works' account. You then spent from that account to built roads and change terrain. You can change the amount you send into the account from 0-100% but the more you send to public works, the less you have to build buildings and units with. Interesting idea, I hope to see more of it in the future. Reach For The Stars - Interesting game... in a scripted linear kinda way. No real ability to do much in it then read a script. Not real fun after 2-3 times through max. And the random game AI sucks it own ***. Rebellion - My biggest beef with Rebellion is that disasters and heavy bombardments will not only destroy troops and facilities, it will remove your ability to rebuilt them in the future. I've had 15/15 systems go to 2/0 after a bad disaster. That's like having a Large Breathable planet go to a Tiny Unbreathable. Other then that... I think it just takes a bit to long to get going. I wish it would give X amount of troops and facilities and you get to choose roughtly what planets they are on at the start. Moo - I still play this game a lot. I have a roughly 50/50 win/loss ratio on the hardest setting. Clue is smaller ships win, numbers overwhelm all. Moo2 - I like the game fine. The ability to customize ships was great. The down side was that super productive planets couldn't build multiple units at once. Nor can SE4 or most other 4x games. to bad I lost the CD a while ago. Conquest of the New World - This is a fun little game. Older then hell though. If the computer players get a big economic lead on you, like they have 3-4 citiies and you have one... you are dead, just a matter of time. If you can get 3-4 cities relatively quickly you've already won. Get a decent army, either through a lot of expensive training, or kiling the natives and the war for independence is a piece of cake. The combat engine is really the best part of the game. Two big armies clashing in a new (old?) perspective of turn based tactical combat. I really want to get my hands on Moo3 when it comes out. Also, anyone know where I can get Moo2 cheap? Did I miss anything? |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
Cyber Empires (AKA Steel Empires) - Old but Cool DOS 4x turn based games with armies of Mechs. My first 4X addiction.
Also... CyberStorm (1) Mission Force, windows, a good turn based Mech squad game with a story line. And... CyberStorm (2) Corporate Wars, windows, select either turn based or simultaneous mode. Good story line, and the competition keeps merging to increase the challange. and for those devils among us..... Chaos Overlords, windows, Strategic Gang Warfare a favorite standby... Deadlock BTW, I tried playing BOTF again. Constant Game Crashes!!! What happened??? It used to be Ok as long as I didn't do certain things in game, and saved often. Re: Any One Here Still Play
slightly OT, but what is the deal with MOO3? Is it coming out, ever? and will it be good you think? Better tahn SE4 if that is possible/comparable? My only experience with it was a mod/secenario for Civilization 2: Fantasy Worlds (Or something similar, it was basically Civ 2 in space).

Re: Any One Here Still Play
Oh! I remember Cyber Empires! I remember it took my brother and I nearly 30 minutes to realize that the metallic planetary surface were bLast doors, not the game map. We were like 9 or 10 and didn't know any better.
Great game though. Was fun to build mid-level mechs like a Hercules and blow away everything but a Titan. Though I hated how only the computer could really aim the missles worth a damn. |

[Edit] Found the e-mail from Amazon that said they'd tell me when it's in; it's been longer than I realized. mlmbd, what Amazon's Web site claims it has in stock doesn't always match what they actually have in the warehouse. I got the e-mail saying they'd tell me when MoO2 came in after I tried to order it from them; I think that the site had that same "usually 1-2 business days" claim when I tried to buy it a year ago. Re: Any One Here Still Play
I reinstalled MOO2 about a month ago and actually played for a weekend. It's still amusing.
Let's see, recently I was playing and modding MTW got the patch and then got sick of it. Since then, I purchased the PTW expansion for CIV3. It's alright but a bit of a rip at the price they're asking. I don't mind paying something for upgrades but, imho, this expansion was a rather low value for dollar. If you haven't been sucked into paying 30 bucks for it yet, wait until you can get it for about $15 or less. Imo, that's about what it's worth. I am now hoping MOO3 doesn't bite too much. I am really looking forward to Hearts of Iron. I have EU and EU2 and they were both pretty good entertainment for a bit. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I played STARS & BOTF, BOTF was fun, but theres to many limitations so its off my system & into the closet shelf.STARS was very good ,But it has the same Limitations, but i do like how the mining system /patrol works. Never player MOO 1-2.Heard thru games domain needs to be patch & patch etc.So im confused if i should look into it.

Re: Any One Here Still Play
for your enjoyment....
Subject: MOO2 or Sex ? Which is better From: burcity1@ix.netcom.com (Craig Wood) NewsGroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic So which one is better - Master of Orion II or Sex ? Master of Orion II can go on for days - from 10:00 am Saturday to 4:00 am Monday for example. Sex will usually Last for an hour at the longest. MOO2 games are always possible if the computer is free. Sex is possible only if your partner is free and "in the mood". You can play MOO2 with a group of friends. Most of us can't/don't have sex with a group of friends. After you're done having sex, you have to wait a while before starting a new sexual encounter. After you're done playing MOO2, you can start a new game immediately. If MOO2 doesn't work right, Simtex will patch it within weeks. If sex doesn't work right, it takes years of therapy to change that. If you're caught cheating at MOO2 people laugh at you. If you're caught cheating at sex, it results in fights, divorces and huge monetary losses. If you have sex alone, people think that's disgusting. If you play MOO2 alone, people think that's OK. You can play MOO2 over the internet with someone 2000 miles away. You have to be in the same room to have sex. You can get AIDS, or other STD's by having sex. You can get mouse shoulder from playing MOO2. If you're repulsive you can still play MOO2. If you're repulsive you probably are still a virgin. You can eat a sandwich and have a drink while playing MOO2. You can play MOO2 with exotic aliens. When you're done having sex, you have to bathe, and change the sheets. BUT : It's fun to have sex while drunk/with someone who's drunk. The CP's will beat you up even on average if you play MOO2 while drunk. It's more fun to have sex in unusual and strange places. It's very difficult to play MOO2 other than at the computer desk. If you're creative during sex your partner will love it. If you're creative during MOO2 people call you a wimp. It usually takes a minimum of $50 to have sex (dinner and a movie) It usually takes a minimum of $1500 to play MOO2 (how much was your Last PC ?) You can have sex during a power outage (and it may be more exciting). |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
LOL! Someone should dig up that "se4 is like sex because" thread. We got to over a hundred of them didn't we?

Re: Any One Here Still Play
I have (but not in my computer HD right now) MOO,MOO2, BOTF, Civ2, Stars and others i don't remember right now.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
At this time, i only play SEIV Gold. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
The only two games I'm playing at the moment are SEIV and Alpha Centauri - both multiplayer (SEIV's PBW is the best multiplayer venue I've ever played - thanks Geoschmo!).
I think these are the best two games in their respective genres (4x and TBS) presently on the market. I've played all the Civ games (including the original Civilization board game by Avalon Hill. Anyone remember that one?) and all the MoO games. I am disappointed in Civ3; the gameplay is just too linear to be interesting. In AC, there are many different ways to approach the game and still win. Not so in Civ3. I'm looking forward to MoO3, which seems to take the original MoO (rather than MoO 2) as its inspiration. And, I will probably buy Stars! Supernova Genesis - if they ever find a publisher. |
Re: Any One Here Still Play
I just started another single player game... still as good as I remembered... fun

Best things from SMAC: Unit Workshop Social Engineering Diplomatic Model Background stories, the interludes, the tech voiceovers, the faction profiles, it makes the entire game feel alive. CTP2: Public Works (micromanagement begone!), may seem as a small thing, but it makes playing a huge map a hell of a lot more bearable, no more hundreds of workers to move as with Civ3 |

Re: Any One Here Still Play
M002... make sure you get the v1.31 patch.... the CP AI is alot better, some other things are changed.
Link to get the patch: ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/moo2/moo2v131.zip The best way to run the game.... is to install it using the installer.... then copy all of the files from the CD's root directory onto the hard drive where you installed the game... (don't over write the files already on the hard drive)... then unzip the patch onto the hard drive..... Put away your CD for same keeping. You are ready to play! Also make sure you have plenty of drinks and snacks on hand (similar to SE4G playing). Civ3 is fun to play... I especially like that culture feature, it reminds me of the "border wars" in Alpha Centauri! I have yet to get Civ3's multiplayer addon.... Thanks mlmbd for that link to the M003 review.... I am looking forward to play it..... KirbyEF |
