Do you use Trillian?

I recently started using trillian, and it's pretty cool. So I started wondering how many other people use it...

Oh, and one quick question. I tried to make it so that the results could be viewed without having to vote first; but the checkbox instructions were kinda vague. Did I get it right?

There's no option for people who know what Trillian is, but have no interest in it.

Yep, your poll is viewable without voting.

OK, I voted, "What's Trillian?" So, what is Trillian? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif

Basically, i don't use it cause none of my friends use it so hence it doesn't do me any good (with the cool smilies) because all of my friends are on AIM anyway i don't need the 3 or 4 service functions. Finally, the ads on normal AIM dont' really bug me that much

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The ads in AIM can be easily hacked out anyway... IIRC, it simply involves deleting three lines of text.
Ditto with ICQ, except it also involves using a resource editor on the ICQCore.dll file. Run a search on everybody's favorite search engine to find out exactly how, I don't feel like looking it up again http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I ended up using Trillian a while ago because I actually use all five mediums... In my hometown, ICQ is the de facto IM program. I have many friends from other parts of PA, where overall, AIM is the de facto choice. In California, it seems to be split evenly between AIM and Yahoo. And finally, MSN is pretty much the fastest growing medium, since Micro$oft pushes it on all their MSN internet Subscribers (which happens to be the fastest growing ISP among those who don't know any better). And IRC I've been using since around 1997, on and off... and I usually don't feel like loading up mIRC, so I just use the one already in Trillian.

Re: Do you use Trillian?

I don't use Trillian (I had to look up what it was) but then I don't use any kind of IM program, not even (?) ICQ: haven't actually found a need for one.

Then again I don't use a mobile phone much, and I've never sent a text message on one. I've never had a PDA or palmtop and I don't own a calculator (there's a ruddy great big one on my desk, you know!). Somehow I seem to be able to manage without. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yeah, trillian for me is a godsend. Hometown, its ICQ, college is AIM, MSN is like 2 people, and yahoo I cant get to work anyhow. IRC Ive never used

Re: Do you use Trillian?

ICQ used to be big in my circle of friends. It died down like a bit over a year ago. AIM is used when I turn it on. I always forget to turn that one on. MSN is what we all use around here now. Never have used Yahoo that much. There for awhile I used it a bit but not much. And IRC I've never used either.

Re: Do you use Trillian?

I'm from california, and i've never met anyone who uses yahoo or msn. I know about 3 who have ICQ but they use trillian to connect into the AIM network, so i have no need for it. I really wanna know where all these yahoo Users are (im from bay area too, ppl in socal might have some odd preferences that i don't know bout)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">You probably don't want to know about some of their preferences, either. Before I moved to LA, I had already heard about everyone aspiring to be an actor/model, and working on a screenplay. I thought it was just an exagerration... well, it's not. Everybody really is aspiring to be an actor/model, and has a "secret" screenplay that they'll plug to anyone who will listen. And with those crazy aspirations comes a lot of eccentricity...

Re: Do you use Trillian?

The only problems with Trillian are due to things like AOL changing their system to try and boot people off. Trillian is always back up in a day or two.

Re: Do you use Trillian?

I don't ever have any problems with Trillian... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I've never had any problems with Trillain either. It's a very handy program.

Re: Do you use Trillian?

Hm, maybe they fixed some of it. Perhaps it is conflicting with other programs. Does it allow for all of the featurs of the progrms it is the front end for ?

Re: Do you use Trillian?

Hmm, I'm having a few problems with Trillian that I can't seem to figure out, and this seems like a good enough place to ask about them...

If I set Trillian to load on Windows startup, I get two tray icons... eh? How do I prevent that?

Also, is there a way to set Trillian to automatically try to connect to the various services whenever an Internet connection is detected? It's a pain having to click "Global Reconnect" every time I go Online just in case there's someone who wants to chat...

Suicide Junkie December 9th, 2002 01:16 AM

Re: Do you use Trillian?

In the Connection manager, there is a checkbox on the right side labelled "auto connect to this account on startup"
Check that, and you should be all set.

As for loading on startup, I don't actually use that. With dialup or sympatico, you need to connect to the internet before you bother doing anything on it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Do you use Trillian?

I use 3. In order of preferance:
If you add me, please note where you got this from.
Yahoo - gryphin_enchaine
AIM - windingstream
ICQ - I'll have to look it up

I don't use Trillain because I have heard too many problems with it.
I just persuade my friends to use Yahoo. They thank me in the end.

Ed Kolis December 9th, 2002 10:00 PM

Re: Do you use Trillian?

I already have that checkbox on... guess it only tries to connect when the program loads (i.e. at Windows startup) and not when a connection is detected http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: Do you use Trillian?

There are some settings on how to retry.
"Retry X times"
and
"Wait X seconds between tries"

You could increase the retry times to 30 or 60, and have 30-60 seconds between tries...
That should give you 15 minutes to an hour to connect to the internet before it gives up on you.

as for people who actually use the service.. well, i dont know about that so much.

OK. Would someone like to tell me what they use Trillian (or any of these other programs) for? Sorry, but it really, honestly, beats me!

Re: Do you use Trillian?

Well, at the moment, I have #SE4 on IRC open, I have Geoschmo on ICQ, and Captain Kwok on MSN.

Imperator Fyron is on all 3, so I can leave him Messages while he's off-line through the ICQ function, or enter 3-way chat with the MSN function.

All in one small-footprint (7 megs for a full install!), unified chat program, with no spyware or ads.

EDIT: Dmeon Lrod Tyopo required a sacrifice.
