music in the game

is there anyway to change settings so it plays music off the harddrive instead of cds? i have put the bulk of my music on my harddrive and would rather listen to it from there rather than make new cds.

also can it play mp3's?

yes you are.
NO, the game cannot play MP3s
And no, the game can only read music from CDs.
Thats why most people here have some kind of MP3 player or at least Windows Media Player.

Re: music in the game

have made cds for music, 300 disk cd changer set on random. but i was also thinking of specific music for the game not necessarily to listen to in general. was thinking of making a se4g file and have music for combat, events, etc.
oh well, guess i will have to make a SE4G cd instead. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

You can make a normal music CD and specify tracks in settings.txt

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">sorry i meant a music cd but with tracks specifically to fit SE4G. with, i dunno say, for combat the music from Flash Gordon when they are taking the War Rocket Ajax, or from the Aliens soundtrack when they are trying to get away after the failed attempt to rescue the colonists. stuff along those lines.
it just would have been easier to just xfr the files to a new folder on my harddrive than create a cd is all.

SE4 just needs better music. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Anyone play SimCity 3000? The music from that was superb. What SE5 needs ('cause it won't happen until SE5) is someone to compose some really good music to go with the game.

Or you can turn SE IV's CD music off, and launch a music player before you start SE IV. (If you try to start Windows' CD Player after you've launched SE IV, CD Player will complain that the drive's already in use; I don't know how other apps behave.)

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Anyone play SimCity 2000? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif God, the music in that game was horrid! Maybe one or two notes at a time, in MIDI, no chords or other attempt at actually sounding decent...

On a side note, I recently saw an ad for SimCity 4 (guess they got tired of the 000's?)... it said "By the Creator of 'The Sims'"... talk about putting the cart before the horse! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif

haha. Well that shows our (collective) age when we remember Sim City before the sims.

Pharoah did play different music when you were attacked by enemies it became well dark and ominous. And when a festival happened it changed a bit to a happier sounding melody. It just seems that there are better things to do than improve music/game interaction

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">How dare you insult simcity! I'll have you eaten by the monster/alien thingy! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

the reason for that ad placement is probably because of the media attention that the sims got after it gathered popular support; SC3, whoever, is not really recognizable to most people.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Oh, yes, absolutely agreed on that. Though at the time SC2K was released (1994? 1995?) game music in general wasn't all that great.

As for the whole "From the creator of the Sims" thing... well, the Sims sold about twice as many copies as all of the SimCity series together, at a guess. It would be silly not to advertise at the people who bought the Sims, especially with Sims Online coming out.

...anyone else have trouble with the CD rom drive spinning and spinning if there happens to be a CD left in it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/confused.gif
This happened enough to me that I now check to see if there is a CD there BEFORE playing SE4. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: music in the game

In my opinion, the game with absolutely the best music ever was Final Fantasy VI. Oh, the town music, the outside world music, the different special encounter musics - they were beautiful and almost hypnotic. After playing the game, I would just spend the entire day with the music repeating over and over in my head. And my favorite of all is the opera scene in which Celes sings the Aria Di Mezzo Carattere!

Kamog: Yeah, Uematsu is also a favorite composer of mine. I have a symphonic Version of the opera from FF3/6, as well as quite a bit of the music from FF8. And who can forget Aeris's theme from FF7... beautiful.

Eric <-- musician geek

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I would eventually like to build up a FF collection. I've only played VIII and X. But over time I'd like to buy I, through IX. Only one I own is X. VIII I played my brothers a few months ago. Well over a year ago I guess it was.

I like to play SEIVG listening to the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Jean-Michel Jarre would be great, but I have none of his CD's.

My favorite game soundtrack is Fantasy General (in fact, I often listen to it while doing something else). Emperor of the Fading Suns had a decent soundtrack (but not nearly as good as Fantasy General).
