OT: How Would You Rate 2002
Now that 2002 is nearly over, how would you rate it? For me, it has been the second worst year of my life, the worst being 1993, and the third worst 1992.
This has been such a completely dismal year, and it just keeps on getting worse with each passing day. If I calculated all of the bad news I have gotten in the Last 15 days, it would equal the total sum of ten life times for a normal person. I know, I know, it seems that nothing has been going right for anyone for at least the Last three years. 2001 was dismal, but 2002, what a rotten and terrible year it has proven to be. This has been, in my honest to God opinion, one of the worst years in our countries recorded economic history. Honestly, they really should add Worldcom, Enron, and many others to the Axis of Evil becuase they have done more to hurt our country than any 10,000 terrorist could ever do. Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
well, i cant think of a whole lot of good that has come out of this year. but i cant think of a whole lot of good that has come out of any year. when it comes down to it, the world just isnt a very nice place. but when it comes down to it, i wouldn't have it any other way.
I dont define my life by pineing after happy memories; I recall how I have grown from strife and hardship. History revolves around war. Kids will read about war, conflict, and political turmoil. Jimmy Carter making peace with half the globe will barely be a footnote. now dont get me wrong - im not wishing hardship on anybody. and i have probably had things alot easier than most. but its only been easy because i take the bad times in stride. if everything turned all rosey, i think that i would pack up and go somewhere less frickin cheerful. so even if its been a bad year, you lived through it. lots of other people didnt, and here we all are. so as we're standing hear on top of this scrap heap, look down on the ruins of the old year, and smile about what you have achieved to be on top of it now. but dont get too warm and fuzzy, because there is another mountain to climb before the end of '03. thank you for subscribing to puke's dime store philosophy. |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
'02 has been a pretty good year for me. It like all the years past have had it's ups and downs. (Like the elevator business...Bad pun I know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )
But I think this year has had more good then bad in it for me. Sure I wrecked my car, sure I had alot of other bad things happening to me this year. But it has all balanced out. The first half of this year sucked like you wouldn't believe. I thought it was going to be the worst year of my life. But it turned out that about midway through the year or so, probably May-June it started to become a great year. Ever since then things have been going good. All in all I think this is probably the second best year of my life, maybe the first best but that's pushing it. But of course I haven't had too many years to compare it to so I am sure I will have better and I am sure I will have worse. I just hope '03 starts and ends the way '02 ended. |

2002 was the best year of my life. My daughter was born in May, and every day has been a pleasure since then.

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
Congrats, sachmo, that's nice news.
There is some refreshing wisdom in here. I'm with these guys. It has to do with perspective. If you were born 100 years ago, you would be in awe at having indoor plumbing. Sorry it sounds like you are down, Atrocities. Try to appreciate the things that make you happy, despite the terrible crap out there. We all control what we can. Best not to get too down about things we can't affect. |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
Its been a great year. I'm still lookin' down at the grass instead of up at the roots.... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Seriously, to all those that have prevailed thru hardship, it's God's way of building character. I've had a little 'character building' myself.... |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
I dunno, I was so hyped for the Millenium. I went to Times Square, and I've never even considered doing that before or since (I usually go to sleep early on New Years Eve -- new year bah humbug http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif )
People were all shocked and relieved nothing bad happened. Took a few years, but it happened anyway, didn't it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Hey, I'm not trying to bring people down. But really, happiness really only happens close to home. So, take care everybody this upcoming holiday season. Find a little joy wherever you can. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
Yes indeed, congrats to all of you who are having a great year. I think it might be regional as far as how your year is going. Here in the PNW, we've been hit hard with a lot of job cuts, state funded program cuts, and other bad things. This area was heavy into the Semi Conductor market, and in the Last two years, that market has collaps nearly completely.
Time will hopefully improve things. That is unless you Subscribe to Albert Bartletts theories. (Those just freak me out.) Seriously, I wish you all continued happyness. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
My area was hit hard with job cuts as well. In the town I live in there is a plant the builds small motors and so forth. But they are slowly getting rid of everyone and moving the operation to mexico where they can find help for dirt cheap prices. (They had 70% hispanic here anyways, but they had to pay them US wages) but that hurt that too much so they decided, hey lets ruin these peoples lives and get cheap help. It was 450 jobs lost. Also alot of other places are laying off. One of the biggest Semi trailer companys in this region also shut down completly. Company was called Monon Trailer Corp. Then in the town 30 miles south of me one of the biggest automotive manufactures also is laying people off. Subaru/Isuzu automotive is laying off alot of employees. It will be a huge lose because of the amount of workers they had there. I can't remember if they just laying off or shutting down all together. But also another semi trailer company, one of the biggest in the midwest (I think it's midwest) is laying people off. Wabash National Trailer Corp. My brother didn't have a job and he applied there, got hired and was making close to 13 bucks an hour on 2nd shift, (he is 19 BTW), and they were laying people off like crazy but they kept him because he was good at what he did. But then he went and quit the job because he didn't like it. So now he is sitting at home (not my home) doing nothing and making no money not paying his bills, etc.. But I got on him about how the economy is right now and that he should have kept that job. But he said he was 'tired of working' why he quit. So job cuts effeted my area as well. But I didn't have a job at anywhere like that so it didn't hurt me any. I work at home so it's all the better. (Web-designing rocks)

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
2002 was an OK year for me. No huge successes or achievements, but no major disasters either. Not too happy with how the stock market did these Last two or three years. I started exercising regularly this year, after several years of getting absolutely no exercise, so that's good. I learned how to rollerblade and use Power Point. Had my first vacation in 4 years. Oh, and this year I finally defeated Sephiroth and finished Final Fantasy VII.
I saw the following movies this year: The Majestic, A Beautiful Mind, Monster's Ball, Resident Evil, Blade 2, The Scorpion King, Space Station 3D, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones, Spider-Man, Men in Black II, Reign of Fire, Signs, The Tuxedo, The Transporter, Sweet Home Alabama, Pokemon 4Ever, The Ring, Die Another Day, Star Trek Nemesis. Star Wars was the best. I saw it 5 times. The worst was Signs. I'll go see Two Towers by the end of the year. |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
Atrocious!, But I'm still here and there is 2003 to turn things around.

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
I dunno, good and bad. I got made redundant, but I got a good redundancy package and a new job straight away. I got a new home & new car & my gf started college again, but the stress & expense of it all has had negative health effects...
Things are looking up again now, but like everyone says, we survived it all. In the end that's all the good news you need. BTW: Puke, I disagree with your philosophies completely http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
In 2002 I discovered Space Empires and left VGA planets/Winplan behind me.

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
In 2002 I've lost my Last (and most loved) grandparent... Two family dogs have died... my brother suffered a nervous breakdown... and I have just a few months left of my education before I can start applying for the same jobs that hundreds of other unemployed computer engineers are applying for...
My first christmas without my famous grandmothers cooking (made with real love) is ahead of me, and new years eve is always the worst day in any year... Atleast I have my health... Next year will be better... 2003 is even a prime number (1997 and 1999 were good years for me), so I have faith in that next year will be better... Maybe I'll even finally get the time to try out PBW http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif -- AeoN2 |

I did not die. So 2002, is in the 'great year' Category.

The best equal only to the year I met my first wife. This time I met my sweet heart.
My worst two was when I lost my first wife and when my X ditched me in 1999. |

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
2002: It was the year of fire. The year of destruction. The year we took back what was ours. It was the year of rebirth. The year of great sadness. The year of pain. And a year of joy. It was a new age. It was the end of history. It was the year everything changed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
The best way to improve your year is by trying to improve someone else's. Weird how that works, sometimes.

For me I can honestly say,it was quite difficult..
You guys don't know me..but all i can say is that I am an American soldier...who is in an infantry unit. Nuff said. been difficult seeing buddies and their familes fall apart. I have seen too much in the pass year to say anything other than that i am glad i am finishing my 4 year tour of duty in 2 months.. I hope 2003 is better... but I have one thing i can say with certainty...Whether your american or not...i am glad to say that ...we were on that wall...so you did not have to be... |
Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
It's been an year already? Time goes by so fast...
2003 has been a so-so year for me. For the most part, I have been busy with work and nothing very exciting happened. Didn't go on any vacations this year. I did keep up my exercise routine, which I'm proud of. A few lousy experiences, like getting my car wrecked in an accident, losing a lot of money in a bad investment, and getting my wallet stolen. But these are temporary setbacks, and life goes on... overall, not a bad year. I have big hopes for 2004... |

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
This year was decent for me. Nothing too exciting happened, really. I did purchase a new car which I thoroughly enjoy driving. Much better then my old car. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif I also started my new job as an network administrator. But all in all it was a good year, nothing bad happened and nothing extreamly good happened. I suspect 2004 will be a great year though.

Re: OT: How Would You Rate 2002
hmmm...I "got" to travel to another foreign country, but this time it was pretty surreal for a person of my politics (rather than a backpack and a Lonely Planet guide, I was attached to a bunch of marines moving into Iraq?and it was harrowing on occasion)?and we moved twice, bought a house, had our one year anniversary, got into a legal fracas with the landlord from hell, but, most important and memorable of all:
