Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

I did it. I let someone talk me into downloading Doga 2 which is free. About 4 hours later with his help I was able to produce these on my own (with some redering from him).
http://www.windingstream.com/se/SpaceEmpires.htm
I would love feedback on everything including Leaglese statements.

Its a lot of fun isn't it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif If you can, download Doga 3, and the patch. I think the beta patch is availible in the MUST SEE sicky.

Do a search for the DOGA program, and see if you can find link to the DOGA forum where you can download the latest Version of DOGA 3 and its patch.

Keep up the great work. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

One tip, just an FYI incase you didn't know. You can select the size you want to render the image in. 36x36 as well as 128x128, then save the image to a folder. No other resizing needed, your done. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Atrocities ,
One, Thanks, you actualy answered one of my remaining quesitons.
Two) What are you doing up so late?, Wait, what am I doing up so late? (don't answer tath)
Three) Are you saying there is a Beta L3 that is Free? I can't justify spending the measily 40 dollars for L3 at this time.

Just put up 2nd generation. Impressions are welcome. Yes, the tessalation seems a bit contrived but it works for me. I will be calling them the Tessalats.

Hey Gryphin: Nice set there! Definitely different...

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

This is a neat and unique shipset! It looks as though several small ships could dock together and form a bigger ship, or perhaps thousands of ships could interlock to produce a sphereworld. It would be interesting to have ships that are modular like this, so if a part of the ship is destroyed in a battle, you just replace those hexagonal parts, or perhaps take the good parts from two or more damaged ships and create one complete ship...

Very nice shipset.

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Thanks guys. I apriciate it. Funny thoug. I did it with the "moduals" because it was the easyest method. I figure most folks will see it as "contrived" but for me and my vision, it works.
Questions:
Do Ships need
1) visible engines
2) Visible weapons
3) Should ships Portrait Pics assend in size visualy. That is: The pic of an escort might take 80 x 100 Pixles , Frigate 100 x 120 pixles. etc..
Or should they all be made as large as posissblle to show detail?
(for what it is worth, This set will attempt to show weapons and visual size differerances.

4) Should I start a poll about these questions.

Any other design ideas?

pathfinder,
Thanks, I do strive for originalty in my world. I take that as a high compliment.

Kamog,
When using this set it does seem to make sence that the race enhance thier ship construction / maintenance atributes as much as possible and reasonable.

The 3rd Generation of Tessellate ships will be designed by:
Design the Dreadnaught first with all of the details till I'm happy with it.
Thank mlmbd enormously
Design the rest of the ships by removing and rearanging the moduals and weapons.
Then thank mlmbd again for rendering and tweaking them for me.

I was thinking about doing a Tutorial on using Doga L2 to make ship sets. Does anyone know if this would be redunant? Is there one out there alwready?
Thanks again.

Incredible as it may seem,
The Tessellate ship set is down to:
Main, Explosian, and. Shields
Please, Where should I look for the information on the content and how to lay these out ?

I have not updated the website yet.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">1- Engines are usually shown on ships/vessels - The only exception I can recall is the Shadow ships in Babylon 5 where you don't actually see any engines on these spider-like ships. I think it's NICE when you can see the orientation of a ship in space, and the engine usually tip you off toward this.

2- No i don't think that's important. Weapons could be behind doors, or could actually be a very small whole in the ship. For instance, a submarine does'nt show it's weapon... The USS Enterprise does'nt have any 'cannon' sticking out for example. but of course you can do as you wish!!!!

3- As much as possible, but if the difference is too large, the escort will look like a pixel compared to a dreadnaught... I would suggest you try to make them proportionnal, but don't allow a ship to be invisible due to it's small size !

4-- Nah.

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Gryphin: portrait is not used in sector (ie movememnt/combat) so comparative size not important there. the mini's are what are shown flying around. difficulty is that escort and fighters would not be visible if shown to scale, so my advice is scale as best you can BUT make sure the ship/fighter CAN be seen http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

BTW all the pics MUST be 128 x 128 pixels for portrait (ship plus background); mini's MUST be 36 x 36 pixels (ship plus background).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">1. As Ritz said, its not a must but it is better if you have them

2. You asolutely dont have to and having too many cannons can look wierd in the game (not all battlecruisers are combat ships) but cannons make ships look good, they always do

3. Not all do that but yes, they should be ascending in size, but not in image size - its all 128x128. (but i'd say you draw with bigger proportions for beginning to see it good, then scale the size down when you're done). Scaled ships look good, better than unscalled.

4. Nope

Hey Gryphin i've seen that set before didnt comment as i didnt have much to say (see sig http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif ) but now the bc-dn ships are quite good (i love that BB). its still flat though http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif .
Some might say LEGO. i wont, it looks good.
if you want scaling down them good... then you should make those octagonals increase in size from ship to ship

I really appreciate the feedback.
I had already started down the "non-proportional" path. This way you get a good idea of what is up. It had a second benefit. Trying to add more and more detail I was forced to learn more about doga. I realize most of the Barrels look like they fire shells like those on Battleships today. Oh well, next time. Most likely my next set will be pro proportional. That will not likely be before June.

Major Thanks to mlmbd for rendering these in Doga L3 and his assistance in getting me started. I could not have done this without him.
Before my next set, I will write a "The Gryphin Way to use Doga L2 to Make SEIV Ship Sets" .

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Nice shipset.
About scaling, what needs to have a good scaling are the 36x36 minis, ships portraits are never pust togeather so you can crop and scale the rendered pictures or move and zoom the camera to show more detail.
And BTW that background looks cool, but it will look odd in the SM window or the eyecandy previews in the setup window.

Gryphin January 5th, 2003 09:27 PM

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Thanks Andrés ,
What do you mean “SM window”? I don’t follow.

Does “eyecandy previews in the setup” – do you mean When choosing races or ship sets?

I just learned
If you have an incomplete ship set in your \..\races folder and try to change ship sets it will eventually try to read that race. Since there are errors in that set, (missing ships), it will give you an error message pointing to said folder and return you to the opening screen. Makes sense to me. I thought I’d share this with other budding ship set designers.

Andrés January 6th, 2003 01:49 AM

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

The Stellar Manipulation window and the ships shown in the left side of the screen during game setup.

Any missing pictures will be replaced with the "neutral" shipset during the game.
It works this way for all vehicle and group pictures, shields and explosions. It doesn't work for pop pics, and I'm not sure what happens with main and race portrait.
But you will have an error in the setup screen if you don't have the pics it shows there, that is race portrait, main, and portrait_battlecruiser.

Gryphin January 6th, 2003 03:15 AM

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Got it Andres,
I tested that. I had to "borrow" a race and main pic and rename them to Tessellate_... to make it work. Thanks.

2. computer locks up completely. this has happened twice.

i am running windows xp professional, amd athlon 950, have 768 meg ram, 128 gig of available harddrive space.

Not exactly. I'm guessing it is a video driver issue.I use
Windows ME
Video chip, (video card) that came on the mother board.
1024 X 768 resolution
Re reading your post
"invalid sync", sounds like your refresh rate is too much for the software. What resolution are you using? 1280 x 768? perhaps? how many colors?
If you are, try dropping to 1024 x 768.
Let me know if you have quesitons.

And L. Carrier looks "lighter" than its smaller brother - carrier

Gryph: Love the set, it's a definite download for me when it's ready.

I don't think you necessarily need visible engines on yor ships - plenty of shipsets don't have them. Whatever looks best.

I downloaded doga 3 and have been using it for weeks without paying a thing. I'm pretty sure I did this without pirating anything.

mlmbd or anyone: how do I get multiple textures on a ship using doga 3? I can only get one texture which covers the entire ship. Also, how do I use my own textures? Oh, and what does this patch do?

Re: Gryphin\'s Tessellate Ship Set

Gryph, have you used the styletester on your shipset? That will highlight any "issues" as far as backgrounds are concerned. You can download the tester at malfador's site. put it in the same dir as your images and run it to view the images, the click "mask" to see how they will look when the game needs to mask out the black (0,0,0) portions.

They will mask different in 16M and 64k color depths, make sure to check both.

It will only choke if for example you have a portrait and not a mini of one of the sizes.

*Transports are way too flat i think
*Space Station looks bigger than Battlestation, you might want to switch them

Otherwise this is an absolutely unique set, i love this battleship and this colony ship
