Tiny Windows programs you can\'t live without:

Do you know any useful-tiny-freeware(shareware) Windows programs you can't live without? I think sharing them with a short description is a good idea.

Here are my favourite:
1. WinRar3 (archivator)
2. Password Safe v1.7 (Enables you to have all your important info to be locked in one database, protected with single psw.)
3. AnalogX POW! v1.58 (easy to use pop-up killer)
4. Ad-Aware 5.0 (removes spy-software from your computer)
5. Strokeit (enables you to draw various gestures with mouse on your screen. It speeds common tasks such as "minimize window", "close window", "start IE", etc.)

Re: Tiny Windows programs you can\'t live without:

Winzip, and TweakUI (to get rid of the annoying arrow on the shortcuts I place on my desktop)

When I do a fresh install, these are the programs I set up first...

Display drivers,
Sound Dirvers,
Winzip,
ACDSee viewer,
TweakUI,
..Then I install the apps and games I can't live without!

Cheers!

I've got Adaware 5.83 -- is there anything later out yet?

Proxomitron - a local proxy/filter that stops pop-ups and does lots of other fancy modification of incoming and outgoing HTML or Javascript 'on the fly' so you can control your browing experience. It has a very complete and complex script language.

Irfanview - a totally free graphics viewer with a very convenient and easy to use 'thumbnail' view mode. This is ideal for surveying your SE components, facilities, and ship images. I can also save any graphic it can view in a different forma,t so it is effectively a converter as well.

Quickzip - a free archive program that handles ZIP, RAR, ACE, and quite a few other formats. It seems to have 'disappeared' off the net recently. Though you can still find copies around the author and his site have vanished. I hope it will continue to develop in the future or I'll have to look for an alternative.

I have some DLL or other that lets me save my icon positions for my desktop. Real handy when i drop down to 1024*768 to play SEIV!

AnalogX makes good stuff - I have the programmer's Calc in my quickbar. I also have Irfanview, but NOT Quickzip - I need to find that! I have yet to find a zip util i'm satisfied with.

Re: Tiny Windows programs you can\'t live without:

Why would you need to reduce your resolution to play SE4?
Unless you've got some incredible rez like 1600x1200 or something as your usual it'll look fine.

How about a spam killer? I've tried 2. Neither of which work the way I want.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, it'll work fine, it's just easier on the eyes than having a small screen in the center. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif I usually run 1280x1024, but I have been known to go to 16x12 for programming (to see ALL the code at once!)

Trillian hasn't been mentioned:
An excellent 3meg program that does IRC, MSN, ICQ, AIM, and Yahoo all in one.

I only 2 programs which haven't been mentioned yet.
The first a little calculator named KolQl8or, made by a friend of mine, very handy if you need to calculate something, works way better then the windows calculator imo, mostly because the equations can be entered and modified in one texfield.
The second is CuteFTP.

Powerarchiver.
Older Versions are freeware and unpacks, ACE,ZIP,RAR and plenty more.
And multi-pack/unpack in a better way than Winzip.

Re: Tiny Windows programs you can\'t live without:

media jukebox - kicks the poo out of winamp, sonique, WMP etc becasue it handles all sound and video file formats. Very sturdy and well-supported, loads of cool features even in the freeware Version, and some excellent "smartlisting" features as well.

Oh, and it's not exactly indispensible, but I often use a nifty bit of freeware called ckrename, which is handy for bulk renaming of files (good for shipsets).

Oh, little proggys I can't live without:

ACDSEE 2.3: still the fastest...

HDvalet: for cleaning up junk files

Filesync: for backing up files, even to CD-RW

Zoomplayer, Winamp 2.78, GrabClipSave,

Catfish: for cataloging CD-R content so you can find what you need.

Powerdesk (free Version 5) Explorer substitute.

It's good to be back... SEIV is still my favorite game, ya'll.

ya, maximum pc kinda took over where 'byte' left off http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

i'm still sad about that mag's demise
maximum pc is still to 'wow wiz bang kewlio' marketing hype for my tastes... and a little short on hard tech info... but i guess i'm fairly extreme when it comes to hardware knowledge (having started back in the days of tape drives on my c64 ;P, then graduated to floppy, then finally a 40 meg MFM drive on my first pc)
