I really like battlecruisers overall, because they're still maximum speed. With a high tech start though, I like to go with baseships, as nothing else can use the massive mount shield depleter, engine destroyer, and repulsor combination so effectively.

Well my responses aren't unique, but here they come...
Light Cruiser - Defense bonus + first hull that gains access to the large mount
Battleship - Decent mobility + first hull to gain access to a huge mount

While we're on the topic of ship sizes, I have to ask... Is there any reason to use cruisers? I can't seem to find a use for em mainly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Cruisers can have more defense than Light Cruisers, or 2 more weapons (or 3 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif ).

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Light Cruisers and Battle Cruisers, with Battleships as a close third.

LCs because they can carry Large mount and are pretty easy to get, BCs because they're the biggest ship that can hit speed 12, BBs for the heavy mount.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

I must agree with Shoujo, I like Light Cruisers for their 10% defense bonus plus they are at max sped whereas Battlecruisers have Huge Mount available and are still at max speed. Cruisers are decent but if you're gonna get a bigger ship without a defense bonus then why not a BC. I like using mixed fleets of DS, LC, CR and BC in long games as each ship can be carefully customised for the role I want it to play in a battle.

Battleships can move as fast as Battle Cruisers in combat.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

This is true but they cannot attack as many times when set to "seek after X" and then to "repeat orders". One assault can sometimes make the difference between victory and fefeat.

Mine Imperator Fyron, in early-mid game is battlecruiser,Fast, multipurpose weapons, once this happens, theres No AI empire that can stop me.
In late game the Battleship http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif ,Good mount, good speed,Overall, Just fits my profile over- all needs.

In the early game, I chose Frigate. Why? It's a nice, small, fast ship -- and I can simply add a CSM (or similar) to my initial scout design ... hopefully with uprated engines too, but ... *shrug*.

There's even room, for shorter-range uses, for 1 PDC and two CSMs in a Frigate. Makes a GREAT -early- hull.

If there was a seperate midgame choice, it would have been the Cruiser hulls collectively (CL, CA, BC).

Late game, I like the Dreadnoughts. Not as insufferably slow as the baseships, but still plenty big. 8)

LC, BB for reasons already stated by others.

I will usually only use DN at late/full tech, if I have Propulsion Expert advantage or as WP blockers.

Wanderer January 12th, 2003 03:27 PM

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

When I get battlecruisers I tend to scrap (sorry, phase out) anything smaller. Battleships are great because they are just as fast in combat and have larger weapon mounts.

If I've taken propulsion experts, I'll use battlecruisers (max speed 13/7) as rapid reaction forces and dreadnoughts (max speed 11/6) instead of battleships for strike fleets.

I hardly ever use cruisers as I'm usually preparing to build great fleets of battlecruisers - I'd use 'em in an emergency, obviously.

I like the best ship my tech will allow. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Of course having said that I usually take a break from researching Ship Construction after I have LC. I also will only research beyond BB when I have a real surplus a research points.

Hmmm...see late game I really like Dreadnoughts. Yeah, same mount as a BB, but the hold more stuff. It's hare to track fast moving stuff, but by then -- I'm into smashing infrastructure. Ma Ha Ha

Earily game I use what I can get, but I always use the Destroyer throughout the game.

In fact I use all of the ship classes throughout the game.

Battleship is by far my favorate.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Early game, I like the destoyers: I can get them reasonably fast and they seem like a nice size.

Late game, I like Cruisers, because a Ship Yard can fit on them.

From what I've seen on this topic, I'm probably going to be really screwed once I start playing PBW. I don't even have the ship mounts memorized, and my mind seems to be more on economics than warfare. *shrug* oh, well, i can still learn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

In the early game I use the biggest hull size I have researched. Light cruisers and Battle Cruisers seem the best of these, though, for the reasons already mentioned.

In the late game I like Battleships - for the same reasons everyone else does. The bigger sizes are just too slow - mobility is often a key to victory.

LC's for the Large Mount and +10 defense, BB's for the Heavy Mount and they're only 1 unit slower than ES-BC, but sometimes I'll use Baseships just because they get Massive Mount!

BattleMoons!
Sure, even using warppoint openers and closers, the thing is slower than most ships, and it takes 25 combat turns just to close to within range of a planet, but its just so big!

Until the point where I can refit my fleet with battlemoons, Dreads for power mixed in with BCs for run and smash operations.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Early game, no doubt LC is best. Combination of 10% defensive bonus, first weapon size jump, and CHEAP to build.

I hear a lot about BC's (and I see a lot) but I have never liked them. If you're playing against me, you'll see them only because I'm building a few while working on BB tech. After I get BB tech, you'll hardly see one built again.

i hate to say it, but the bigger the better...

the only time i use smaller hull sizes is when i havent had enough time to research the big ones yet http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

weapon mounts are key, efficiencies of scale and all that, massive mount > heavy > large > normal

I like battleships. Big enough to hold all the cool gadgetry and pack a powerful punch, and less time to build than dreadnaughts. I like to build all different kinds of battleships with different weapons configurations. Also great for mobile shipyards and large repair ships.

Speed is often more important than size, actually. If you can outrange the enemy's larger ships, their extra damage does not matter. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">This is very comforting, for I am an impatient man, and tend to cram as many engines on my ships as possible. This is one reason why I love QNP - I can squeeze approx. 14 move on scout escorts with starting engines! Nothing like those to find out about your local space NOW. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

I usually use the destroyer in "early" game, because I usually spend research on racial techs fairly early on. Once the Light Cruiser is available, I'll use that. The Cruiser I only use for Space Yards. The extra control requirements, etc. mean it's not much better than the LC for combat; I'd rather wait to get the Battle Cruiser and phase out the LC's for BC's.

For late game, I generally go with baseships as "flagships", escorted by BB's or DN's. The BB's are fast enough to engage the enemy, generally slowing them down enough for the Baseship to arrive and finish the job. I've also experimented with putting fighter bays on baseships, with less success (usual problems with fighters in late game when everyone has lots of PDC). I keep using LC's in late game to carry repair bays, as dedicated PDC ships, or as boarding vessels.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

And no one mentions the carrier ships... carriers are nice IMO. They are hard to get fully stocked (it takes forever to build enough fighters for a big carrier) but those fighters can really devastate everything (except a PD ship, but...). Anyhow, Carriers arent even in the poll! See how biased this poll is! Bloody murder!

TerranC January 15th, 2003 05:40 AM

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Somebody mentioned that Light Cruisers are a good size: Since you only have to comit half of the 800KT to fighters, you can have a light cruiser with heavy mounted weapons and fighter escort to boot.

This is a poll about warships, not fighters! I don't have transports in here. Would you like to complain about that too? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif j/k

in early game, yes, I would like to complain about it. An early transport chocked full of sat cargo, can be devastating. I have glassed several AI planets using these. One ship, 9 sats, C-YA wouldn't wanna B-YA. and hmm, sats don't use supplies iirc.

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

Besides (here we go http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ), Intent has to play a factor. If i build a small transport and max the sat/cargo for the sole purpose of attacking enemy planets and ships, then it is a warship, as I intend it for that purpose. Aside from whether or not I put an early PDC on it, it is still designed for battle. they also make nice fish hooks. The AI can't resist a transport thinking it will be an easy kill, but supprize is the blue plate special when they have to face 3 stacks of sats carrying seekers.
I don't design them for the main purpose of being a planet satellite/population carrier, altho they work nicely for that too.

Anyone else use designs/combinations like this early game?

Fyron January 15th, 2003 11:38 AM

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

A warship is an armed ship. A ship that launches satellites is by no means a warship. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif A supply-generating ship is designed to go with the fleet and enter battle. Would you call it a warship? I wouldn't. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: Favorite Ship Size Poll

No, I would not call a ship with a design intent of providing supplies a warship, even tho it enters combat. But a ship designed with the intent of launching battle sats for planetary bombardment or ship attack would be, as that was the INTENT of the design. And as for a weapon on it, I have placed PDCs on them, but not all the time. does that make them a warship because they are a one-gun wonder? I don't believe so, it is the several sats it is going to launch at strategic locations that make it such.

Don't get me wrong, I can see you POV regarding warships, and I understand the intent of the poll. besides, it's your poll. you could exclude transports, troops and sats yet include banana peels if you wanted. the poll is {out of the chassis listed, which are your favorite}.

Don't want to hijack the thread on a debate about what constitutes a warship. (unless you want to keep the debate going. lol) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Launching ships for sat attack... sounds kinda funny. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

PDCs aren't exactly weapons, more like defenses. They can be used offensively ofc, but using them on a ship doesn't make it a combat ship.

The transport ship itself does no fighting, so it is not a warship. Would you call a ship that has a Star Destroyer on it a warship? I wouldn't. It is the same principle. Or how about a troop transport? It drops offensive troops, but is it a warship itself?
