OT: Superbowl

Ok, with the Superbowl coming this sunday I wanted to start a poll to see who you think will win.
The two teams as I'm sure you all are aware of are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders beat the Tennessee Titans. Which everyone knew they would.
While the Bucs pulled the upset over the much favored Eagles.

Now it is time to cast your vote as to who will win Superbowl XXXVII.
Once you vote post your reasons why you voted that way.

Ragnarok January 20th, 2003 06:57 PM

Re: OT: Superbowl

I voted for the Bucs to win. I think if their defense does to Oakland what they did to the Eagles that they will be the champions. Granted the Raiders are probably the Favorites to win but I like going against the odds.
Plus with Mike Alstott, Fullback for the Bucs, playing for them I have to cheer for them. Alstott went to the college that is only half hour away from me. Which if you all are wondering is Purdue University.

I figure Oakland is going to win it, but I would like to see Tampa Bay do it.

Re: OT: Superbowl

The Raiders will win, because their passing game and their talented receivers will beat Tampa Bay's two deep zone. The Bucs will have to counter by coming at the Raiders with more blitzes to overcome the Raiders' excellent offensive line, which will make them vulnerable to screen passes to Charlie Garner, trap plays, and such. On the other side of the ball, the Bucs don't have much that the Raiders defense can't handle. They ran 32 times for just 49 yards against the Eagles, which makes their victory in that game pretty remarkable. They'll be lucky to score 17 points against the Raiders. Final score: 27-13 Raiders.

One addage that has survived many many years of testing is this:

Defense wins championships.

I voted for Tampa Bay. We will see..

Best of all, Poetic justice will be served if John Gruden can beat his former owner's team.

P.S.
<sneer>
I hate the Raiders.

Sorry, Raider fans, I just had to get that out of my system.

May the best team win!

Who will win the Super Bowl? Easy: ABC! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Slight edge goes to the Raiders, for three reasons:
1. The old guys know this is probably their Last, best shot at the ring, and thus will want it more.
2. So much media attention will be directed toward Jon Gruden that Raiders coach Bill Callahan will be able to keep focus much more easily.
3. They're still PO'ed about the Tuck Rule game from Last year.

I actually heard one call introduced with the phrase "According to the rules of the NFL" Anyway, i think its going to be close, but the bucs will end up on top.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes you are correct in seeing this. They are saying "By rule... the call is this..." Which in my opinion is the right way to do it.
As it is right now I heard it, in the off season after super bowl the league is going to review how they handle roughing the kicker calls - due to the steelers/titans game that steelers should've won - and also I heard they will look at how overtime is handled. But they didn't think anything would change as far as overtime is taken care of.

But anyways, I hate the Giants but I agree, they did get robbed. Even if the ybeat the 49ers, they would have got stomped against the bucs. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif The refs missed a plainly obvious pass interference call downfield that would've allowed them to kick game winnning field goal.

Oh, I forgot to post my score prediction. Bucs 24 - Raiders 17.

As someone already said, Defense always wins the championship.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">They got a good team Last year. Last year they did ok, but they lost in the first round of the playoffs if my mind serves me correctly.
Then this year they have Brad Johnson at QB, of course the great FB in Mike Alstott. Then in free agency they picked up another grear WR in Keenan McCardell who came from the Jacksonville Jaguars (my favorite team ever since they came in the league in '95)
Then of course they have Keyshawn Johnson in the WR spot too. So two great WRs in those two players. Finally got a good QB in Brad Johnson.
Then they also have a good Tight end in Ken Dilger who came from Indianapolis a season or two ago. SO they have been slowly getting a better team. But offense isn't what got them here. It is there #1 ranked defense in the league that got them this far.
In the superbowl it is the first time in history that the #1 defense (Bucs) plays against the #1 offense (Raiders)
It should prove to be an interesting game.

But the final is in. It was a 48-21 whooping for Tampa Bay. My team made it through. (Not my favorite team, but my team to win this game) I predicted 27-21 in favor of Tampa Bay so I got half of the score right. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

But in the NFL next year I think my team, the Jacksonville Jaguars will get to the playoffs. They just begun a rebuilding process this year but I think they can at least get to the playoffs. Tennessee will do nothing this year. Colts are going to be in trouble with having to redo alot of contracts in order to keep Manning. And of course the Texans are still a fresh team so the Jags could do something. But it will take alot of work and finding some good players for cheap prices. They cannot be a free agent contender with their cap the way it is. But anyways, enough of my rambling. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I wasn't much for either team though I prefered the Buc's for being the underdogs.

You could just tell they would make in after the first couple plays. Admittedly the Raiders got screwed one touchdown. And they were playing for too many two-pointers, I think they coulda at least made it a close one (or maybe a win) if they didn't lose that TD and went for extra points.

Was a pretty fun game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

What do you mean by lost TD? They didn't lose a TD. Are you talking about the one where he was wide open because the defender tripped? If so they challenged that play and it was ruled a TD because he had possession and he drug his second foot to make it a catch. Or are you refering to a different one? <font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't know about decade. I think this upcoming year yes they will be there again. And then again in 2005. But since the NFL introduced the Cap to the league in 1994, or was it '96? I think '96. Anyways, ever since they added that to the league it has made it difficult for a team to be a powerhouse for more then 3 or 4 years. When you are loaded with talented players you're going to end up paying through the nose to keep them. Which in turn will cause you to go over the cap and in turn cause you to have to cut some good players in order to get under the cap limit.

That is what happend to the Jags over past few years. They signed and kept big name players for their run to the superbowl in '99 and now they are paying for doing so.

Same goes for the Bills over past couple years. They have been rebuilding their team. The Colts will soon be in the same situation.

The key to having a power house football team in this league anymore is to draft smartly in april, get good quality players in the draft that will progress quickly and are able to replace those high cap numbers for the veteran players on your team. If you don't do that you won't be a contender for more then 3 years.

But hopefully the Bucs will be smart with their cap in the offseason and also next season so they can make more then 2 more runs to the superbowl. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Yeah, I'm sure they will eventually do it. I imagine if their cap situation (I talk about that alot don't I? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif ) isn't too bad that they can slowly build a good team just like Tampa Bay did. I think that cardinals can make it to the big one in no less then 5 years. (It's along time I know but they have some work to be done)

I don't think my Jags will make it to the big game in any less then 3 years from now. They also have alot of work to do. I expect 2 more rebuilding seasons until they are playoff contenders once more.

Tampa Bay did use to play like girlys... But now they are the most brutal team in the league. They are extreamly physical and you don't want to be hit by them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Tampa Bay along with the Eagles are two big time hitters.

putting TB and the Eagles in the same class is quit a statement. The Eagles has a fantastic team when I was Last able to watch a season.

The Cards have had many chances to build a good team, but they always end up picking up some high dollar baffon for a QB (that has been on four other teams and couldn't cut it) and overlooking or second stringing a decent rookie. The Cards management was one of the things that drove me away from the sport.

I have not watched a game in the Last two season because of my situation, nor the two prior to that because of lack of interest and triggered rants. I kinda wanted to get back into the fan-base this year, but alas was not able to. I am hopefull next year I will be out of this area, and in a better position to be able to enjoy a season. (hears Fyron mumble...."is this guy boo hooing again?") http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

My second favorite team use to be the browns. When i do get back into the fan base, I might have to take a season and reassess my team choices. Tho the Cards will always be on top. I know vegas starts accepting bets right after the draft. maybe I will put 20 bucks on the Cards to win. Should get decent odds. lol

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Indeed. Eagles were favored this year to win the NFL championship and win the superbowl. They had an outstanding year (12-4). They lost to the Giants in week 17 that allowed the Giants to make the playoffs. The Eagles got a first round bye due to winning home field advantage throughout the playoffs. They then played the Falcons in the Divisional round. In the NFC Championship game the Eagles played the Bucs. Whoever won goes to the superbowl. The Eagles were heavy Favorites being at home, and the Bucs record in Veterans stadium was 0-3. Their record for playing in weather below 30 degrees was something like 0-9. But they came and the stomped the Eagles. They just plainly shut the Eagle offense down. So they indeed had it going for them this year.

The Cards have had many chances to build a good team, but they always end up picking up some high dollar baffon for a QB (that has been on four other teams and couldn't cut it) and overlooking or second stringing a decent rookie. The Cards management was one of the things that drove me away from the sport.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I know, I can't figure that out sometimes. I think the Cards need to work on finding a new GM or something in order to be smarter with their draft picks and smarter with who they sign for their QB. If they do this I think they can become contenders quickly.

My second favorite team use to be the browns. When i do get back into the fan base, I might have to take a season and reassess my team choices. Tho the Cards will always be on top.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Browns didn't do too badly this year. They just shot themselves in the foot a couple times. They nearly won their division but they couldn't pull off the games that mattered. They were man handling the Steelers in the Last game between the two in the regular season but they ended up losing. They were doing the same to the Colts but the Colts came back and beat them. The Browns made it in as a wild card and faced the Steelers to begin with. At halftime they held a good sized lead. (I think like 20 points) but the second half they blew it once more.

Re: OT: Superbowl

Yea. Reminds me of two things.

The 2nd one, is an old joke>

Q: What is the difference between the Denver Broncos and Linda Lovelace?
A: Linda Lovelace don't choke on the big ones.

The First tho is a little frustrating, and the names have slipped my mind. The cards had just obtained 2 new QBs. one was a 6'4" rookie (Last name starting with a B iirc), and a "vetern" player who's previous teams included Tampa bay in all their horror. During the pre-season games, they compared the two against each other, and the rookie CLEARLY was the better player. But when the season started they put the "veteran" player as starting QB and gave the fans the excuse that "experience" was more valuable than anything else. They lost a lot of games (and fans) that year. At season end, the rookie left the cards, and brought his new team to the playoffs the next season.

As long as the cards make those kinds of mistakes, them winning the superbowl will become as much a joke target as, the Cubs winning the world series was. (someone made the comment after the Last Cubs WS win, that the Berlin Wall would fall before they won it again. The commentator was right).

All you Cardinals fans can console yourselves with the fact that at least you aren't Bengals fans.

Geoschmo, so desperate he actually rooted for Cleveland in the playoffs this year. Which is of course why they lost. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
