In search of Forum Rules

Would someone please post the forum rules (or a link to them) so newbies like myself don't do something terrible.

The Mods can delete this thread and add a "Sticky Forum Rules (guidelines)" so us newbies know where they are going. Its all well and good that you members with hundreds and thousands of Posts who already know them, but not so easy for newbies.

So please do us newbies a favor, make (or post) the rules (or guidelines). I for one would appreciate reading them, that is if they exist.

I wanted to say more in this post, but my mommy made me take them out. Seriously, I'd really like to read the forum rules.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I don't know if there are any Written rules. The unwritten rules are:
Romen Rule: When in Rome do as the Romans
Golden Rule: Treat others as you would have others treat you
Wiccan Reed: Anything you do, (positive or negative) will come back to you three times
Practical rule: When in doubt leave it out.
Use Lots of smiles
Note: I have broken most of these and at this point tend to keep my post to what I'm sure of.
Hope this helps

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I actually find it more disturbing that the forum rules and legal polcies aren't in the forum registration.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I'm not sure there are any forum rules. I never have read them. I was a newbie to this forum in March as well and I never read the rules. I just guessed at them. A thing that helped as well is seeing how all the other higher ranked members acted and so forth. One of the best ways to set guidelines is to lead by example. So not only those higher ranked then me do this but I try to do so as well. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I agree with AS of SA that the forum rules or guideliens should be available during registration. I also think they should either be included along with the; my profile, register and other links at the top of the page, or at least linked to in the FAQ.

A forum without some kind of guide to follow can sometimes lead to chaos, but that's just my opinion. Maybe the Mods can get together and come up with a workable sollution.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I agree that it could lead to chaos. But so far it hasn't happened. Every member in this forum is really good about not causing problems and so forth. Ever since I have been here we've only had 1 person get roudy and he is no longer here.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I guess its a case of 'if it ain't broke...' but in my years, I've also learned that using that as rule, leads to complacency, and that can be very dangerous.

Even if there none now, I believe there should eventually be some sort of guideline or rule of conduct for the forums. Anyway, its no big deal, it was a request, not a demand.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

if you post forum rules, then you are obliged to enforce them. its pretty free and easy here, as everyone is fairly mature. there really are no flame wars, all the cartoon violence is in the cantina, and the most heated debates are over wither or not CIV3 sucks. which it does, by the way, just not for the reasons previously stated by others. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Forum rules:

If you're abusive, they'll lock your thread, and put a block on your login 'til you cool off.

If you use a random text generator to clog threads, they'll kick you off.

Beyond that, everything goes. Of and on, someone says thay hate SE4, Shrapnel Games, Malfador Machinations. These people are ignored until they leave.

We laughed most of the haters out a long time ago... very different from other games. Usually you will get ninnies all over the place in other game forums. SEIV is a great place to be. ("Space Empires IV: A great place to live!")
Anyhow, Civ3 wasn't the worst game Ive played, nor the best. It simply is Civ3 (with a lot that could be better, but I still had some fun)

Tanks for the feedback peeps, I'll play it by ear, which shouldn't be too hard, espeically with my ears.

Puke
Are ya saying that CIV is kinda like the H.I.V. of the game world? nahhh, its not THAT bad... I've played it........ once! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Re: In search of Forum Rules

I do recall at least one poster who seemed to have psychologically "snapped." Started out just fine...
but turned way abusive. I mean, baffling! Like they went off meds cold turkey. I think their ultimate removal was handled well. It wasn't like they didn't get many many repeated warnings to be civil.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

heh, i dont know if i would go comparing civ to a std. i played civ 1 ALOT. and liked it, even for its failings. but all the other games in the same serise and in the same tradition have played EXACTLY the same, and have had EXACTLY the same failings. sure, there was more eye candy and more stuff, and more options.. but the experience was the same. no new gameplay.

and all the old irritating bits with the cheating AI and poorly balanced battles remained forever unchanged.

but thats a topic for another thread, we dont need to hijack THIS thread with civ gripes. enough good threads have fallen into that trap already.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif No, hiv is a lot worse than civ3. if hiv kills you, you can't reload the game of life.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

Puke alludes to a good point. In genearl try not to "hijack a thread". That is post tooo much Off Topic content.

Re: In search of Forum Rules

Ahhhhhh, you mean like in the Great Canadian Joke thread?

Sorry if I went off topic, but since I was in search of Forum rules, my doing so helped me learn something new about the Intel Forums, namely about the also unwritten off topic rule. The rules of real life apply in the forums as well.

I'm slow, but I'm learning. Now where can I find me a copy of these unwritten rules I need to learn?

Kaladaar:
I think we newbies have to make our own list of rules.
So far I have learned:
1: Don't make jokes about GT in the Cantina (unless you are a masochist)
2: Don't highjack threads, unless its to,
- A: To complain about double postings.
- B: Bash Civ3.
