Why can\'t carriers be mothballed?

I've tried repeatedly to mothball a fighter carrier (Small carrier 27 fighters) in a PBW game but nothing happens.
Why?
What to do?

Remove Cargo/Fighters?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I didn't think you could mothball ships if they had anything in storage. Try removing the fighters first, then mothball the carrier. using ships as off site storage don't work. (tried it with troops/WPs not long ago)

Not sure,
Are you allowed to mothball a ship with units abord?

3 replies that fast? All in the same minute... and I was in the crowd. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif .

Proud of meself

Just pay the maintenence cost and sleep the unit. That should be better in the case of a stealth/cloaked attack anyway.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Perfect. We need seconds in the forum's clock.

Some side questions, too lazy to test it out:

-Mothballed ships at a training facility cannot increase combat values, right? I am always wondering about that, but if this would be the case then it would not be realistic.

-If I mothball spaceyard stations with a slow build rate, does the remaining time decrease whilst it is mothballed?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The Last time I checked it did. If you kept the ship mothballed for ten turns when you unmothballed it you got it back fresh. You can't mothball and unmothball to reset the clock though.

Are you bug hunting, or looking for cheezy tactics to use?

Besides not being able to mothball a ship that's carrying cargo, you also can't retrofit one that's carrying cargo, either.

I don't think you can analyze or scrap it, as well.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, nope. It is more the housewifely tactics that I am always searching for, "gimme that penny".

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">As I understood it, a long ago patch causes a mothballed spaceyard to also hold it's slow build countdown. I definitely experienced this. Haven't tried it recently, did it change back?

Mothballing the yard base freezes the slow build time. It doesn't continue counting dowwn until you unmothball it.

What about training experience? Will it be reset to "greenhorn" if I mothball a ship? I think, this is what I have seen (from extensive observation).

Re: Why can\'t carriers be mothballed?

All ship experience is lost when you mothball the ship. You can still retain fleet experience with an entire fleet of mothballed ships though (move out of fleet, mothball, move back in). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
